Much of the work in the space has been lovingly crafted by people who love to make things. It is a passion and creative necessity that takes a great deal of time and effort.

We are pleased to have met and know these people and even more happy to be able to share their endeavors with you. The shop is new and as with our entire project it will grow and develop according to your support and how you get involved.

There are also a variety of items that we have found in Hanoi or on our travels. Of course these items are more expensive than when we found them. What did you expect…..

About Flipped Flipped is a 2010 romantic comedy drama film directed by Rob Reiner. It is an adaptation of the novel Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. It had alimited release in the US on August 6, 2010, followed by a wide release three weeks later on August 27. “Flipped” takes Bryce and Juli from Grade School to Junior High, through triumph and disaster, family drama and first love, as they make the discoveries that will define who they are – and who they are to each other. The screening is for educational purpose, entrance is free, though guests are welcome to donate to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.

2013 marks the 40 year anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between France and Vietnam. Throughout Vietnam many music, art and other cultural activities have been mounted to celebrate this occasion. Marking the closing of the year of cultural activities of France in Vietnam 2013, a photo exhibition of two photographers, one the highly respected Le Vuong from Hanoi, and Sebastien Laval from France, will open Friday, December 13, 5:00pm at the Ho Chi Minh Museum.

Photo exhibition “54…” is composed of the two photographers works which record the daily life of the ethnic minorities in Vietnam from 1980 up to present in black/white and color photographs. This exhibition will be also be presented in the Museum Orangerie du Senat in Paris from 27 June to 8 July, 2014 as part of the festival of cultural activities of Vietnam in France 2014.

Photographer Sebastien Laval first came to Vietnam in 1995. During many trips over the years, he began to record the daily life of the ethnic minorities people in order to introduce their beautiful culture and also to create an archival memory of the ethnic minorities to preserve and transfer to the next generations.

Sebastien Laval‘s works have been exhibited in Vietnam and France while he continues his research and documentation. He is represented by Art Vietnam Gallery in Hanoi, Vietnam.

This exhibition is presented by the French Consulate General of HCMC, the French Institut, and the embassy of France. The President of the French Institut, M. Xavier Darcos and Ambassador M. Jean-Noel Poirier will preside at the opening reception.

You are invited to the talk with writer Patrick Deville on the occasion of publishing his books titled “Longue vue” and “Yersin, Plague and Cholera” in Vietnamese.

Once again, the famous doctor and scientist Alexandre Yersin (1863 – 1943) is honored through “Yersin: cholera and plague” (Peste et Cholera) by Patrick Deville. With the background of Indochina in the early 20th century, Yersin is described with two major characters: passion for scientific research as well as discovering the unknown areas in Vietnam. In 2012, this book has won Femina award along with several French literature awards. Patrick Deville has published more than ten works, which have been translated into 12 languages. In 1988, “Longue vue” became his first success, and then came “Yersin, plague and cholera”.

Come to film screening and discussion “Bitter Seeds”. BITTER SEEDS is a 2011 documentary film exploring the relationship between escalating rates of suicide among Indian farmers and the crippling cycle of debt, crop failure and dispossession brought about by the introduction of genetically modified cotton seeds.

In his film, Director Micha Peled interviews all stakeholders, from the local representatives of the multinational agribusiness Monsanto and the seed salesmen to well-known Indian activist Vandana Shiva, from farmers and their families in the state of Maharashtra to village elders who remember when life as an Indian cotton farmer was not marred by tragedy.

This beautifully done and emotional documentary film portrays the critical aspects of genetically modified seeds for India’s cotton farmers and their families, and invites the audience to deeper reflections about the ways we are cultivating our lands.

The film is presented by the Goethe Institute in collaboration with the ‘Working Group on Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources Management’ under the Hanoi based ‘VUFO-NGO Resource Centre’. Members of the working group include organizations like VECO, BftW, VSV-SVA, Seed to Table, CARE, CGFED, SRD, CSEED and others.

In celebration of 40th Year of ASEAN – Japan Friendship and Cooperation as well as the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly co-hosts a music concert by AUN J Classic Orchestra on Thursday 12 December in Hanoi.

AUN J Classic Orchestra is a unique orchestra formed in 2008 by eight excellent Japanese traditional musicians to deliver the simple but strong message to the audience worldwide, “Japanese traditional music instruments are plain, simple and cool!”

With this mission and their belief “music has not border, but roots”, AUN J Classic Orchestra has been actively performing in more than 70 places all over Japan, as well as in foreign countries including France, Italy, China, Papua New Guinea and Croatia, to convey the beauty of Japanese culture in music.

The eight young Japanese musicians are all active at the forefront, earning awards in Japan and abroad, covering major Japanese traditional instruments such as Taiko (Japanese drums),

Shamisen (three-stringed Japanese lute), Koto (13-stringed Japanese zither), Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute), Shinobue (Japanese transverse flute), and Narimono (Japanese percussions).

The core members of AUN J Classic Orchestra, Kohei & Ryohei are twin brothers and form a duo unit called “AUN” who was Japan’s former cultural envoy to South East Asia in 2011. Their performance with the Japanese percussionist Hide (also a member of AUN J Classic Orchestra) in Hanoi caused a sensation at the time.

Having experienced collaboration with AUN in 2011, Ngo Tra My & Nguyen Thanh Thuy, distinguished Vietnamese traditional musicians, will also join AUN J Classic Orchestra to add the beauty of Vietnamese culture in the program.

Art Festival “Queer Forever”

Queer Art Festival: 14 – 29 Dec 2013

Queer Forever! is the first queer art festival in Vietnam, which connects contemporary art and Vietnamese culture with queer sensibilities. The festival is taking place from 14th to 29th December, 2013 in Hanoi. Queer Forever! will introduce art works of five contemporary artists and a series of lectures and discussions around the topics of queer and gender issues in film and cinema, literature, and visual art.

The festival’s objective is to create dialogues and encourage critical thinking about different topics of sexual diversities and cultural and social issues through arts and interdisciplinary dialogues among researchers, social activists, artists and writers, gender diverse communities, and especially marginalized sexual minorities and the general public.

The Vietnamese LGBTQ community has recently gained attention and is raising its voice over equality.

Queer Forever! aims to become a place of exchanging knowledge, research, and experiences among different creative communities such as art, film and cinema, literature, social science, and social development with researchers, social workers, artists, LGBTQ community and audiences.

On December 14th, renowned film director Phan Đăng Di will open the festival by giving a talk about Gay topics in Vietnamese Contemporary Cinema: Rebellion within Frames at the Goethe Institute Hà Nội. Later that day, there will be a screening of Love Man Love Woman, a film by video artist Nguyễn Trinh Thi, followed by discussion on Đạo Mẫu and the first LGBTQ community in Vietnamese culture. Marcus Mạnh Cường Vũ, director of Yxine Film Festival, will present YxineFF Loves Queer Forever! on December 15th at Nhà Sàn Collective. The event includes four short films that were nominated for the YxineFF Rainbow Heart Awards. The audience will have a chance to ask the directors questions.

In the two week long festival’s program, Trần Ngọc Hiếu, a Linguistics and Literature professor at the Hanoi National University of Education, will share his thoughts on The Representation of Gay People in Vietnamese Literature: From Disguises to Coming out in Recent Autobiographies. Art researcher Đỗ Tường Linh will talk about SameSex Desires in Contemporary Vietnamese Paintings, using artist Trương Tân’s work as an example. Artist Nguyễn Tân Hoàng (PhD, assistant professor of Bryn Mawr College, USA) will present A View from the Bottom: Asian American Masculinity and Sexual Representation. A discussion with photographer Maika Elan about Photography and Representation of LGBT People in Vietnam will end our program on December 29th.

From December 20th to 29th, 2013, Queer Forever! will present artworks by artists Gabby Quỳnh Anh Miller, Nguyễn Tân Hoàng, Việt Lê, Nguyễn Quốc Thành, and Lu Yang at Nhà Sàn Collective.

Born in Vietnam, artists Việt Lê and Nguyễn Tân Hoàng followed their family to the US at a very young

age. Their works look at the representation of Asian American masculinity in media and popular culture to deal with race and ethnicity issues.

Gabby Quỳnh Anh Miller, an emerging VietnameseAmerican artist interested in silk paintings and landscape paintings, is torn between a far away motherland and her home—as she put it, “A promised land for the Others, who are dreamers, radicals, and sexual deviants.”

Vietnamese artist Nguyễn Quốc Thành deconstructs clothing as symbols of masculinity and power in

society. And he reconstructs it again, through quiet tiny stitches of hand embroidery and sewing.

Chinese artist Lu Yang’s powerful futuristic video and photographic works are related to gender, science, and popular culture. Her works question the law of propagation of natural beings.

Artworks by Lu Yang, Việt Lê, and Nguyễn Tân Hoàng have been exhibited in many contemporary art centers and museums around the world.

From the organizer: The project “Boîte” consists of the proposal to a new medium of visual artists: a box two meters wide intended to welcome a contemporary work of art. One can dupli- cate the box and integrate it in any place.

Two «Boîte» will be installed: the first, in Marseille (France), the second, in Saigon (Vietnam). Together they will form a network, promoting the mobility of French artists abroad and foreigners in France. Conclusively, the essence of this project is to creating a synergy between artists and cultural professionals between France and Vietnam. It is therefore important for us to realize the extraordinary richness of a French and Vietnamese creation, using the window that will be the Year France- Vietnam (France in Vietnam in the second half of 2013 and will continue with Vietnam in France, the first half of 2014).

In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a mural painting exhibition “ABILIGHT” by HITOTZUKI in Hanoi. HITOTZUKI is an artistic collaboration formed in 1999 by KAMI and SASU, aimed at expanding the stage for creativity rooted in the dimension of street culture.

Their distinctive worldview stems from the fluid interaction between the dynamically flowing curves fashioned by KAMI, and the strong and flamboyant symmetric motifs engineered by SASU. This vision breathes new life into the sense of beauty derived from the street, and has succeeded in invigorating the era with a steady stream of vivid new landscapes.

“ABILIGHT” is a newly coined word by HITOTZUKI, deriving from “Abi[lity]” + “Light”. It conveys a positive message to the visitors in Vietnam to share a forward-looking feeling.

HITOTZUKI will start to draw mural paintings on the premises of the Japan Foundation from Friday 6 December, and will complete by the opening day on Saturday 14 December. The exhibition will also introduce the series of products designed by HITOTZUKI, ranging from T shirts, bags, caps to skateboards, watches and mug cups. The development of their designs from artworks to commercial products will surely inspire young generation of Vietnam for their future creativity.

The exhibition is free admission and opens at the Japan Foundation (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) at 15:00 on Saturday 14 December with an opening dance by dancers from Youth Theatre Vietnam. The dancers will dance in front of the mural paintings, wearing blue dresses matching with the HITOTZUKI’s blue paintings.

There are different problems when people bring their family members to their new homes, to their new neighborhoods in their new living places and moreover in our new society. And since moving into this new apartment house, I get new inspirations for my artwork. The Hanoi New Music Festival defines itself as a platform for international and national artists of the experimental music scene and offers a unique sound experience.

On invitation of the Goethe-Institut Vietnam, German percussionist Burkhard Beins joins the New Music Festival. Born in 1964 in Lower Saxony, Burkhard Beins lives in Berlin since 1995. He is well-known for his use of percussion in combination with selected objects and furthermore his work with electronics, electro-acoustic instruments and devices. Burkhard Beins is performing at festivals all around the world since the late 1980s.

At Hanoi New Music Festival, Burkhard Beins will give both, solo and joint performances. On 5th December he will presents a solo percussion piece and on 7th December, he will perform electro-acoustic music. True to the motto of the evening on 8th December, “Being Together”, the artist will play together with musicians from around the world.

Come to visit new and recent work by Tiffany Chung, one of Vietnam’s most prominent contemporary artists. The much-anticipated shows are part of a larger, ongoing series of works entitled The Galápagos Project, which confronts the current wreckage of our world by examining the aftermath of colonization and modernization. Deriving from Chung’s studies on the decline and disappearance of towns and cities due to deindustrialization, demographic change, land development, environmental catastrophe and extreme climate impact, the work investigates the complexity of urban progress and transformation in developing and post-industrial countries.

Based on research in collaboration with Erik Harms, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Yale University, an archaeology project for future remembrance reflects on Thu Thiem, the 657-hectare master-planned new urban area in Ho Chi Minh City over the Saigon River, just a stone’s throw from the downtown gallery. Harms states, “Chung’s ‘archaeology of future remembrance’ sifts through the rubble of development to recapture voices and social spaces which have been rendered invisible by the transformation of a city. It is not a project of nostalgia but of remembrance, uncovering, like an archaeologist, traces and buried fragments of civilization.”

At the De Tham gallery, Chung will present The Galápagos Project: on the brink of our master plans. Two new maps will be unveiled: one based on flood prediction of Ho Chi Minh City in 2050; the other on defunct coal mines in Yamaguchi. Also showing will be a two-channel video installation portraying an allegorical fantasy imagining the end of the human race. In addition, Chung will exhibit her widely acclaimed ‘floating town’ that premiered at the Singapore Biennale in 2011. This will be the first showing of the ambitious installation in Vietnam. Titled stored in a jar: monsoon, drowning fish, color of water, and the floating world, the work was created in response to the extreme flood prediction in 2050 of Ho Chi Minh City and the lower Mekong basin and the rising of sea levels due to global warming. Constructing an ‘alternative urbanism’ based on existing vernacular architectural designs of floating villages such as Tonle Sap Lake (Cambodia), Halong Bay (Vietnam), Sanglaburi (Thailand), Srinagar (India), and traditional farmhouses in Gifu and Yamaguchi, Japan, Chung has modified the architectural styles to build a 1:50 scale model of a ‘floating town’.

Solar panels, rainwater harvesting system, vertical and rooftop gardens, and floating rice paddies appear to be inspired by arcology, an architectural design movement that seeks to combine architecture and ecology in responding to global environmental issues. However, moving beyond those basic principles, the work in fact examines failed utopias by questioning the self-sustainability and effectiveness of arcology. As a form of comparative global ethnography, the work attempts to reveal how vernacular architecture and arrangement of these communities could be a more fluid form of urban planning; that arcological principles have already existed in their ways of life.

National Park, Wooden pedestal from Dong Ky village.

The artwork is based on research done at Room 1, Nha San Collective, Zone 9, Hanoi; the former Central Pharmaceutical Factory II, which originated from Army Medical Department Pharmaceutical Factory (established in 1947 with the purpose of producing medicines for the army).

The permeation of perennial chemicals makes the room reeked of medicines and it is deeply ingrained in the humid walls, creating a haunting about life, death and the invisible existence of the physical world.

I invited an old friend to make the artwork with me, Mr. Kinh, manager of Ba Vi Cactus National Park. He was born in France in a Vietnamese family. He returned to Vietnam since he was a child, then joined the resistance army to fight against America and China. After the war, with the love for plants he moved to Ba Vi mountain to live and work ( he is also the manager of Bamboo and Pine National Park). He chose the most suitable cactuses to grow in boxes of humid wall mortar from Room 1 to display there.

Through the retention and transformation of material, the material itself becomes a historical existence, a haunting memory and a new story has begun.

The new faith in a physical world gradually transforms into a belief, an obsession with the natural law of reincarnation, despite what we want or do not want to accept.

Christmas is in the air. When gifts come from the heart, the warmth of Christmas brings joy and unity. Since 28th November 2013, Hanoi’s tallest Christmas tree (a 15-meter pine) is displayed on the hotel’s Le Balcon. This year, 50 children from Humanitarian Services for Children of Vietnam (HSCV) have been invited to take part in Christmas celebrations at the Metropole Hanoi. HSCV is dedicated to serving orphans, homeless children and other needy children in Vietnam.

To further support HSCV, the hotel has collaborated with Art Vietnam Gallery and 11 local artists: Dang Anh Viet, Dinh Thi Tham Poong, Ngo Van Sac, Nguyen Hoang Nam, Nguyen Nghia Cuong, Nguyen Ngoc Lam, Nguyen Quang Thang, Nguyen The Hung, Nguyen Van Phuc, Pham Huy Thong, Tran Hoang Son, plus many big companies to create 11 fabulous Christmas trees displayed in the Metropole courtyard until 28th December for public viewing. Members of the public will get the chance to vote for their favourite Christmas tree, with an award then presented to the winning company and artist.

The children have written their wishes in red envelopes, to be hung on the Metropole’s Christmas tree throughout the holiday season (from 28th November to 28th December). Our guests are invited to donate into an envelope – and help make a child’s wish come true.

‘In order to speak about Global Parasites, i would like to give an example from nature. There are certain families of wasps, that lay their eggs on or inside the living creatures like caterpillars that feed on spiders. Simultaneously the wasps inject the toxin into their victims which paralyses them but does not kill. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the living prey, consuming the non-vital parts like fat and digestive organs first, keeping the vital items like the heart and central nerve system for the very last in order to prolong the time for which their food remains fresh. We may try to consul ourselves that such gruesome behaviour is limited to the lower creatures. But an analogous process of draining the substance from human communities has been refined to a conscious built-in device for subsisting and prospering at the expense of others, leaving the prey depleted, exhausted and impoverished. The powerful parasitical and predatory culture of global capitalism has preyed across the world of the last few decades. In the process, it has sought to devour all other cultures and civilisations, expropriating their substance, draining their wealth in order that it makes itself grow and comfort and opulence. The toxin that is used to mentally paralyse its victims is acclaim of universality, unique validity and exclusiveness. At the same time, it has endeavoured to teach some of its victims the art of survival, in imitation of its own imperatives. These are the capitalist elites, the internal kind of parasites who prey on their own fellow species.’

Camusi plays free improvisation: the aesthetic approaches of the two musicians interact with each other touching different areas: contemporary music, avant-garde jazz, electroacoustic, trip-hop, noise, psychedelia, ethnic, no wave, etc. Voice, electronics and drums have the same importance, following a sort of instrumental democracy.

Patrizia Oliva’s research is aimed on a redefinition of contemporary singer that often includes gesture. Her exploration on electronics includes noise, field recordings and voice loops. Stefano Giust’s drumming focuses on rhythmic pulse and its destruction, along with embracing powerful rough angularity, asymmetrical rhythms, noise, silence, timbric intensity and extended techniques. He avoids most clichés, nevertheless manages to transmit a pulsation that doesn’t derive from a single beat, but by assembling several rhythmic such as “micro events”.

Camusi is a project totally identified with the performative act of the concert and not with recording stuff. The radical decision to not publish new albums is also a protest of silence against the music market, an invitation to go to concerts.

Taking its name after a unit of electrical resistance which took its name after the German physicist Georg Simon Ohm, GENTLE OHM is and is not quite what it says on the tin. A new project from Hanoi-based noise enthusiast Josh Kopecek, GENTLE OHM could easily be amongst the British composer’s (who, in the past, has been writing contemporary classical suites, playing Brazilian music with his band Xeomistas, or bending the sh*t out of homemade circuit boards) most electronic, adventurous and elaborate offerings to date.

But are they ‘gentle’? Of course not. What we encounter is an ominously cavernous blanket of noise, interwoven with hauntological samples from bygone eras of traditional Vietnamese music, dipped in modern industrial colors, then manically live-processed in between dub-like beats into elaborate streams of consciousness. The resulting maelstrom is a canopy of dappled light over and through the sound with which he works.

manzi & Domdom proudly present to you a sound & video art installation by The Landscape Quartet & Nguyen Thanh Thuy.

In the beginning of September 2013, the ‘Đàn tranh’ player Nguyễn Thanh Thủy went to Ngang Nội in the Bắc Ninh Province with Stefan Östersjö and Matthew Sansom from the Landscape Quartet. With a wish to revisit sites known from childhood and interact with the soundscape of the present day the three musicians worked up on the mountains around the village and on the rice fields. The two works presented at Manzi’s in Ddecember draw on material from both settings. In the rice fields where Thủy used to work as a child and catch grasshoppers to grill in the night, Thủy put her đàn tranh upside down to let the rice play it. Up on the mountain, Stefan Östersjö stringed his đàn đáy to three trees and played the instrument together with the wind in the trees. The installations at Manzi’s created by Matthew Sansom and Stefan Östersjö aim at capturing the complexity of the interactions between the musicians and the landscape and of the intense sonorities of the Vietnamese countryside.

Landscape Quartet is a group of four performers and sound artists: Matthew Sansom and Bennett Hogg (UK), Sabine Vogel (DE) and Stefan Östersjö (SWE). The group works with ecological sound art with the fundamental approach of participation instead of representation. Through the dialogue between nature and acoustic instruments they create interactions with nature that can take shape as guitar/violin/tree sculptures; networked performances that connect multiple places in a landscape etc. The context of each live project is enhanced through small scale exhibitions of previous landscape projects which show the diversity of responses to the challenge of working in the natural environment.

The musical aesthetics of the Berlin percussionist Burkhard Beins is informed by electronic and industrial music, musique concrete and free improvisation, and has been developed and shaped through his work with several long-standing experimental music groups in Berlin and on a transnational level. In his solo pieces for selected drums and cymbals Beins works with a differentiated palette of sound and noise material rather produced by friction than by actual drumming. Within an interplay of delicate shifts and sudden contrasts he is exploring the wide timbral and dynamic spectrum of his instruments. Although he predefines fields of musical possibilities and a general formal shape before going on stage he deliberately leaves all decisions regarding the embodiment of sonic detail, dynamics and durations to the moment of the actual performance. Through this approach he is able to consider and involve characteristics of the specific room acoustics and the concert situation during the musical process.

SISU percussion ensemble, established 1993, is one of Scandinavia’s most prominent contemporary music ensembles. They represent contemporary music of the highest quality, written for SISU by both Norwegian and international composers. SISU is recognized for its unique musical aesthetics, developed through an open and exploratory attitude towards every musical challenge. With 20 years worth of experience from the Norwegian and international music scene, SISU is an artistic driving force when it comes to percussion. The initial vantage point for SISU is contemporary music. However, the percussion ensemble has challenged musical styles throughout their career. SISU is a flexible ensemble both in terms of musical expression and composition.

That image of indie bands and artists performing impromptu gigs on the streets of Paris probably automatically makes people think of La Blogothèque and Vincent Moon. But such limited description would do this talented French filmmaker injustice. His recent nomadic years have seen him travelling around and across the world, from the remotest African villages through deserts, rainforests, South American cities thousand metres above sea level, witnessing mystical religious rituals, breathing in urban dusts from myriads of South East Asian motorbikes.

What Vincent Moon has been looking for, however, is not even the most magnificent sight on Earth. The same camera and a few low-budget microphones that have helped him film countless Western bands are now used to capture traditional arts and music that are constantly facing the threat of being consumed by modernity; or local musicians that seem to have been forgotten by the world and the passing of time. Everywhere he goes more and more ‘Take Away Shows’ (of a new, much more exotic variety) take place. Gradually, a new series takes shape: Petites Planètes – Little Planets.

Trang Trinh is one of Vietnam’s most exciting classical performers. Trained in London at the Royal Academy of Music, Trang has an international career with concerts in Europe and Asia.

Park Sung Min, the husband of Trang, is a professional tenor and has performed widely in Russia, Europe and Asia. He is the conductor of the Hanoi Korean Church Choir and founder of the Miracle Choir, made up of children from various children’s homes in Hanoi.

The Shin Trio, Father Joshua and daughters Mary and Joy have a passion for excellence and desire to provide musical enjoyment for the homeless. Joshua holds a Doctorate of Music in Piano Pedagogy.

Ella Walls has performed in musical theater shows and has been part of a contemporary music ministry in Australia before coming to Hanoi. One of our own worship leaders, Ella impressed the audience and officials at our Easter concert last spring.

The African Band, various African music styles are used to give a great Christmas performance. The group has been hosted at embassy parties and other international events in Hanoi.

A music-theatre performance composed and performed by Kim Ngoc. After the premiere of this piece in Hanoi 2007, it has been then performed in different well-known stages of the world. It offers a mixture of music, light, stage design, theatre set, acting and video. The Magazine Visiting Art described the event as “figurative performance’’ – “abandoning the written text in favor of new ways of communicating with the audience, Kim Ngoc’s work promises a ground-breaking new vision for Vietnamese contemporary theatre.”

“What Makes The Spider Spin Her Web” is a popular line from an old Vietnamese folk song, which often appears in other traditional songs and is both a question and a lament. It affects Kim Ngoc powerfully, calling to mind women, a rope binding them, a journey shared, from the ancestors to the present day.

Blind Spot is the main theme of Hanoi New Music Festival this year. Blind spots always exist in every vision, Hanoi New Music Festival 2013 has commissioned 5 new productions from local musicians and artists to manifest the remaining “invisible” spots of Vietnamese experimental scene. All Vietnamese authors share a strong interest in the sensitive turning point between the past and the present or, in other words, the cultural zones with interruption of time and space.

This is the official opening event for Hanoi New Music Festival 2013.

1. CIRCLE OF LIFE

The piece is based on two characters who represent two different generations, who can also symbolize for the circle of creation. As the previous generation moved into the past, it left behind messages to the contemporary one who at the same time receive signals from the external world. How will they deal with these messages? They might deny or lose the values of the other. Or they might harmonize and transform them, and continue to pass them onto the next generation.

The dialogue between the two generations expressed by the languages of two different art mediums will take us on a journey to explore the mystery of life – a perspective, an attitude upon conflicting and interrupted values.

2. PIANO AND CONCRETE DRILLING AND CUTTING

The ten-minute piece derived from the idea to record the noise of concrete drilling and cutting as my neighbours repaired their home. The terribly drastic, violent and persistent noise lasted several weeks … On the first few days tolerating the noise of concrete drilling and cutting, I tried to shut down and cower, but as I’ve reached my limit, I opened windows and sat at the piano to .. ‘beat and demolish’ with the desire to harmonize with the horrible noise out there, but not enough to give way to anger, vice versa, that would destroy both the piano and the ears themselves. Finally, some soothing tunes from piano – based on the sound of concrete drilling and cutting which was recorded and remixed on the computer – helped to create this piece.

3. WAITING FOR WIND TO FLY A KITE

Tiny sounds are not enough to overwhelm loud noise. They have to wait for a falling spot to raise their voice. Moves are not strong enough to carry themselves; they need a ‘falling spot’ from a previous power to operate. Small fates are too weak to overcome themselves and they need a falling spot at some point in their lives.Correspondingly, they do not compromise or confront the seemingly impossible they hide themselves waiting for the “falling spot’’oft he ‘big statues’ to find an opportunity to raise their voice and the meaning of their existence.

4. Shhhh

Music is a minor part in numerous sounds which we are able to hear on an active or passive basic. Among them, there are sounds that we wish to hear and ones we do not- all create a complex essence of life. The piece Shhh is shaped from simple and tiny elements, in which normal sounds in daily life reappear through instruments. Each minute of the piece is the process of assembling various mechanical and electronic sounds, producing multiple layers, structures and images relating to the stereoscopic interference of modern society.

He travels all around the world playing as a soloist and in chamber music with prestigious orchestras.

Regarded as”Master of colors” (Le Monde, 2006) and appraised by French and international criticizes, the pianist Olivier Chauzu will delight your ears with his astonishing virtuosity in the program.

In the beginning of September 2013, the đàn tranh player Nguyễn Thanh Thủy went to Ngang Nội in the Bắc Ninh Province with Stefan Östersjö and Matthew Sansom from the Landscape Quartet. In Bắc Ninh, both of her parents grew up in the same small village of Ngang Nội, famed for Quan Họ the folk music tradition of love songs that emerge from the province and has had some of its most famous tradition bearers specifically in this little village. With a wish to revisit sites known from childhood and interact with the soundscape of the present day the three musicians worked up on the mountains around the village and on the rice fields. The two works presented at Manzi’s in december draw on material from both settings. In the rice fields where she used to work as a child and catch grasshoppers to grill in the night, Thủy put her đàn tranh upside down to let the rice play it. Up on the mountain, Stefan Östersjö stringed his đàn đáy to three trees and played the instrument together with the wind in the trees. The installations at Manzi’s created by Matthew Sansom and Stefan Östersjö aim at capturing the complexity of the interactions between the musicians and the landscape and of the intense sonorities of the Vietnamese countryside.

AT EAST OF MYSELF, REMIND ME I’M ONE

Duo Camusi play free contemporary improvisation: voice, electronics and drums have the same importance, following a sort of instrumental democracy. In their duets they develop different layers and perspectives. Camusi’s “At East Of Myself, Remind Me I’m One” is a performance where both musicians will play some Vietnamese objects, collected during the days before the concert, to be played beside their usual instruments. Patrizia Oliva’s research is aimed on a redefinition of contemporary singer that often includes gesture. Her exploration on electronics includes noise, field recordings and voice loops. Stefano Giust’s drumming focuses on rhythmic pulse and its destruction, along with embracing powerful rough angularity, asymmetrical rhythms, noise, silence, timbric intensity and extended techniques. He avoids most clichés, nevertheless he manages to transmit a pulsation that doesn’t derive from a single beat, but by assembling several rhythmic such as “micro events”.

Taking its name from an alternative reading of the name for the Bodhisattva of Compassion,Kannon, KanZeOn, which can be translated as “she who hears the cries of the world” is anunorthodox but utterly magical meditation on sound and the ritual and philosophical role itplays in Japanese religion.

Filmed in Kyushu, the film looks at, and more importantly listens to, three very special Japanese musicians: Akinobu Tatsumi, a young Buddhist priest and custodian of a temple outside of Kumamoto City who moonlights as a hip-hop DJ while indulging his love of beatboxing in the remote forests; Eri Fujii, who has devoted her life to the mastery of the Sho, a rare and ancient Chinese bamboo wind instrument evoking the cry of the Phoenix, and Akihiro Iitomi, a master of Noh theatre and a Kotsuzumi drum player whose love of jazz almost matches that of his passion for Japan’s traditional performing arts.

As a documentary, KanZeOn does not seek to explain as much as to enlighten, taking theviewer on a hypnotic sensual journey from the timeless to the modern by way of a mysticalparade of images that resonate seamlessly with the sounds.
