Buddha Boxing Workshop
Sun 23 Dec 2012, 2 pm
Manzi
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi
Buddha Boxing is a ‘sound art game’ devised by the electronic music duo FM3 (Christiaan Virant + Zhang Jian). Inspired by the strategic elements of Xiangqi (cờ tướng), the game features two players duelling over a card table, with Buddha Machines (in their ‘On’ mode) used as the chess pieces. Each player takes turns to either place a new Buddha Machine on the board, or make adjustments to Machines already in play and/or move them to a different position – all the while watched by the surrounding spectators, resembling a normal chess game in just about every street corner. Except that the (de)synchronization of a host of Buddha Machines being played at the same time creates a meditative and surreal experience not like anything you come across in everyday life. After a demonstration game between Christiaan and Zhang, the audience would be invited to take on the role of a Buddha Boxing player (and in a way, a sound artist) themselves. Don’t miss this very special and intimate (and utterly fun) workshop.
Tickets: FREE ENTRY for ticket-holders of I AM THE COSMOS. 50,000 VND otherwise.
Entry is on first come first served basis. Due to limited capacity (30-35) the audience is recommended to come early.

Cinexin Hanoi
19, 25 and 26 Dec 2012, 8 pm
The Hanoi Bicycle Collective
44, lane 31 Xuan Dieu Str, Hanoi
Cinexin Hanoi is the new little movie night we open at THBC. Three films will be presented: Freaks, Life of Brian and To Be or Not to Be. See more details below:
19 Dec 2012
Cinexin Hanoi : FREAKS, 1932 by Tod Browning
FReaks THBC
The genesis of MGM’s Freaks was a magazine piece by Ted Robbins titled Spurs. The story involved a terrible revenge enacted by a mean-spirited circus midget upon his normal-sized wife. In adapting Spurs for the screen, writers Willis Goldbeck, Leon Gordon, Edgar Allan Wolf, and Al Boasberg retained the circus setting and the little man-big woman wedding, all the while de-vilifying the midget and transforming the woman into the true “heavy” of the pie ce. German “little person” Harry Earles plays Hans, who falls in love with long-legged trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova). Discovering that Hans is heir to a fortune, Cleopatra inveigles him into a marriage, all the while planning to bump off her new husband and run away with brutish strongman Hercules (Henry Victor). What she doesn’t reckon with is the code of honor among circus freaks: “offend one, offend them all.” What set this film apart from director Tod Browning’s earlier efforts was the fact that genuine circus and carnival sideshow performers were cast as the freaks: Harry Earles and his equally diminutive sister Daisy, Siamese twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, legless Johnny Eck, armless-legless Randian (who rolls cigarettes with his teeth), androgynous Josephine-Joseph, “pinheads” Schlitzie, Elvira, Jennie Lee Snow, and so on. Upon its initial release, Freaks was greeted with such revulsion from movie-house audiences that MGM spent the next 30 years distancing themselves as far from the project as possible. For many years available only in a truncated reissue version titled Nature’s Mistakes, Freaks was eventually restored to its original release print.
25 Dec 2012
Cinexin Hanoi : Life of Brian (1979), Monty Python’s
On a midnight clear 2,000 years ago, three wise men enter a manger where a babe is wrapped in swaddling clothes. It is an infant called Brian…and the three wise men are in the wrong manger. For the rest of his life, Brian (Graham Chapman) finds himself regarded as something of a messiah — yet he’s always in the shadow of this other guy from Galilee. Brian is witness to the Sermon of the Mount, but his seat is in such a bad location that he can’t hear any of it (“Blessed are the cheesemakers?”). Ultimately, he is brought before Pontius Pilate and sentenced to crucifixion, which takes place at that crowded, nonexclusive execution site a few blocks shy of Calvary. Rather than utter the Last Six Words, Brian leads his fellow crucifixees in a spirited rendition of a British music-hall cheer-up song “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” The whole Monty Python gang (Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, and Terry Gilliam) are on hand in multiple roles, playing such sacred characters as Stan Called Loretta, Biggus Dickus, Deadly Dirk, Casts the First Stone, and Intensely Dull Youth; also showing up are Goon Show veteran Spike Milligan and a Liverpool musician named George Harrison
26 Dec 2012
Cinexin Hanoi : To Be or Not to Be (1942), Ernst Lubitsch
Ernst Lubitsch directs the 1942 political satire classic To Be or Not to Be, which marked the final screen appearance of comedienne Carole Lombard. In Warsaw at the beginning of WWII, Maria Tura (Lombard) and husband Joseph (Jack Benny) perform anti-Nazi plays with their theater troupe until they are forced to switch to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Lt. Stanislav Sobinski (Robert Stack) falls for Maria and meets up with her during Joseph’s famous “To Be or Not to Be” speech as Hamlet. When Stanislav is eventually dispatched for war, he implicates Maria with Professor Siletsky (Stanley Ridges), who has a secret plan to destroy the Warsaw resistance. The Polish theater troupe is then forced to use their theatrical skills to ensure their survival. Eventually, they turn to impersonating Nazi officers — and even Hitler himself — in order to outwit the enemy and keep the resistance safe from spies. To Be or Not to Be opened to a controversial release in 1942, when the U.S. was still very much involved in WWII. It was remade in 1983 starring Mel Brooks and real-life wife Anne Bancroft.

Live Concert/Film Screening “I AM THE COSMOS”
Fri 21 Dec 2012, 8 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho
The Onion Cellar’s last event of 2012 blurs the line between a film screening and a concert. A calm evening dedicated to contemplative music and visuals, though the adventurous spirit that is present at all their events will still be there. Forest spirits and Zen-like music. Lynchian drone and decaying analogue tapes. The trees, the wind and the cosmos. Come meditate.
Live Performances:
ISLAJA (experimental folk music)
FM3 (electronic ambient)
JRG_ONE (ambient drone)
Film Screening:
PANDORA (dir – ALEXIS DESTOOP / music – OREN AMBARCHI)
The Experimental Films of DALIBOR BARIC
“Islaja’s spectral sound suggests pathways to other worlds, [..] displaying a disquieting combination of innocence and fearlessness, and a seemingly innate ability to transcend the confines of a genre.”
Hailing from Helsinki, ISLAJA is one of the most well-known names of the ‘New Weird Finland’ movement. Her music utilizes a vast array of sound elements, combining Northern European forest mystique, folk music, psychedelia, electronics and drone-like textures with a uniquely enchanting voice breathing icy Finnish poetry – all wrapped in an intimate lo-fi aesthetic. It is no surprise to hear about her reputation as an ‘acid folk version of Bjork’ – though Islaja certainly sounds like no one else. Since 2004, Islaja has released 5 full lengths that all went on to charm critics and audience alike. Recent touring activities saw her taking on a full UK headline tour, playing the cult-ish Supersonic Festival and London’s Café OTO (as well as picked by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore for the ATP he curated in 2006); she has also shared the stage with many of her kindred spirits, from Deaf Center, Low, Animal Collective, Lucky Dragons, to fellow Finnish occultists Fursaxa, Lau Nau, Hexvessel etc
FM3 is the duo of Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian – widely recognized as the pioneers of electronic music in China. Together they make Zen-like meditative ‘poetic noise’ music mixing Chinese traditional sounds with modern digital techniques. Christiaan and Zhang are also the creators of Buddha Machine, the famous loop player / sound generator series much loved and praised by the likes of Brian Eno, David Byrne and electronic music enthusiasts worldwide. In 2009, FM3 collaborated with industrial legend Throbbing Gristle on an exclusive version of the Buddha Machine named ‘Gristleism’. Christiaan Virant recently released a solo album entitled ‘Fistful of Buddha’, continuing his exploration of Zen-like ambient music.
JRG_ONE’s debut Hanoi live appearance at The Onion Cellar’s Musick to Play in the Dark saw his woven sonic textures crafting a delicate (yet equally haunting) take on experimental music. His music makes use of prepared samples, field recordings, synth tones and sequences, live vocal looping and other sound sources. These elements are combined to create soundscapes that alternate between dark ambient drones and waves of ghostly, ethereal beauty, all set to a visual backdrop of slowly decaying analog videotape. Not unlike the sound design of a David Lynch movie.
ALEXIS DESTOOP’S PANDORA begins where the classical myth of Pandora ends: after the opening of the box, after evil has spread throughout the world. Awakening in an abandoned house, a woman finds her way from a locked garden to an altered landscape. The film leads the viewer into a labyrinth in which time seems to be an insoluble mystery and evil is portrayed by the silent desperation and contained fear in a world with frayed edges, marked by decay and abandonment. Featuring a mesmerizing score from the renowned Australian experimentalist OREN AMBARCHI to accompany the equally mesmerizing cinematography.
Alexis Destoop’s work forms an ongoing investigation into the workings of the image. His multi-layered constructions in photography, installation and film examine the component elements of storytelling, the experience of time and the processes of identification and memory. Appropriating visual archetypes and genre conventions, his work questions, reconfigures and short-circuits the meanings associated with them. His practice originates from photography and is influenced by his experience in the performing arts as well as his studies in philosophy. He often works collaboratively, involving writers, performers and musicians.
DALIBOR BARIC is an experimental filmmaker living and working in Zagreb, Croatia. He makes short films out of ectoplasmic sensations enfolded in discarded, feeble snake skin of fashion magazines. A voyeur of reality, who uses film as a rearview mirror and reality as the ultimate public domain film. His films are influenced by vintage images and popular culture as much as by hallucinations, psychedelic influences and surreal juxtapositions. Dalibor’s works have appeared at prestigious multi-arts festival such as Transmediale or European Media Art Festival. The Onion Cellar is very excited to introduce the premiere of his fascinating short films in Vietnam.

Project “Film and Music/Sound Effects”
Live Tape - Tetsuaki Matsue
HCMC: 17 and 18 Dec 2012
Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema
-
Hanoi: 20 and 21 Dec 2012
Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam and UNIJAPAN, in cooperation with Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema & Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema, proudly present a two-day intensive project on “Film & Music/Sound Effects” by young promising film makers from Japan both in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from 17 – 21 December.
Blockbuster films with enormous budgets are mostly produced by studios in Hollywood and it seems to be reckless for filmmakers in the rest of the world to compete with them in the same way.
While some film producers and film makers are dreaming of working in a Hollywood style or reaching to the Hollywood level, the other creators are exploring the alternative possibilities of film making in different ways.
Mr. Tetsuaki Matsue, for example, made a documentary film “Live Tape” miraculously in a single 74-minute shot with an extremely low budget and won the Best Picture Award in “Japanese Eyes” section at 22nd Tokyo International Film Festival in 2009.
Mr. Satoru Hirohara, a young master-degree graduate from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, also directed a film “Good Moring to the World!!” with a relatively small budget, featuring no name actors/actresses, and won a couple of awards including the Dragon & Tigers Award for Young Cinema at the 29th Vancouver International Film Festival in 2010.
Both award winning films “Live Tape” and “Good Morning to the World!!” will be screened with Vietnamese sub-titles as samples of such alternative endeavors, followed by Q&A sessions with directors. Besides screenings, Mr. Tetsuaki Matsue will deliver his lecture on “Film & Music” to share his thoughts on this theme. Mr. Satoru Hirohara, on the other hand, will discuss about the film education in universities in Japan, welcoming Mr. Takaaki Yamamoto (Recording Engineer / Studio Engineer) as an interlocutor. Both lecture and discussion will be delivered in Japanese with Vietnamese interpretation.
One more exciting event in this project is a workshop on “Sound Effects” by Mr. Masaya Kitada, one of the best Sound Effect Engineers and Foley Artists in Japan. For exclusively invited promising students and young film makers, he will disclose his process of working in detail, introducing how to use the worldly standard software for Sound Effects in DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), Pro Tools.
We do hope this project will inspire lots of young Vietnamese students and filmmakers to develop their own alternative ideas in the future. Feel free to come to join the project!

Film synopsis
Live Tape (2009, 74’, dir. Tetsuaki Matsue, documentary film) is all about intimacy, the intimacy of following singer-songwriter Kenta Maeno as he wanders through the streets of Kichijoji city on the first day of 2009, performing songs about life and love. It is also an intimacy that could only be achieved in a film made in one take, with minimum equipment and no script – the ultimate new-wave film.
Good Morning to the World!! (2010, 81’, dir. Satoru Hirohara, feature film) High-school boy Takahashi Yuta is effectively bringing himself up alone. His father is long gone and his mother is constantly off on trips; she leaves him notes and modest amounts of cash to keep himself fed. Not surprisingly, he’s a bit of a loner at school. But he’s fascinated by (identifies with?) the vagrant man who sleeps in a road tunnel near his home, and when that man is killed – apparently by a gang of local delinquents – he sets off on a quest to find the dead man’s family and friends, following clues in the man’s bag. For Yuta, this becomes a formative lesson in the ways of the adult world, taking him far beyond the teenage obsessions of his noisy classmates.
