It was directed by Bob Clark. The film has since become a holiday classic and is shown numerous times on television during the Christmas season on the American network TBS, often in a 24-hour marathon.

Art from Hanoi on Show in Sydney

14 Dec 2014 – 10 Jan 2015

SLOT gallery

Sydney, Australia

Exhibition “Democracy” presents the latest work by Hanoi-born and Hanoi-based Australian artist George Burchett.

Born in Hanoi, Australian artist George Burchett was delivered in exile. 15 years later he was granted his rightful citizenship. By this time he had lived in Vietnam, Russia, Bulgaria, Cambodia and France. After relocating to Australia, despite his best efforts, Burchett just never felt at home. A 2006 visit to Hanoi confirmed his decision to return and live there.

This SLOT work has its genesis in an appreciation for 1925-1945 historical drawings from the era of French colonisation, combined with Burchett’s own research into his father’s journalistic photographs spanning 1954-1966, and including a close association with the independence leader Ho Chi Minh.

The figure in conical hat is in fact interpreted directly from a photo of his father wearing a conical hat. It is repeated across the page in vermin-like fashion, as if some disposable faceless stereotype. Burchett reclaims the symbol in an ironic play on propaganda countering propaganda, a statement of stubborn persistence and resistance.

Suspended in space like apparitions across the page these figures seem determined to be recognised; to form a statement of belonging all of their own. An inked finger, violent, impertinent, dirty punctuates the top left hand area of the work, titled Democracy (mis/spelt in Greek).

The work is quite simply a memoriam to the life of Burchett’s father, this year posthumously awarded for his journalistic achievements. Wilfred Burchett was an Australian (minus 17 years of barred citizenship) with an interest in presenting news stories from more than one perspective – an endeavour which necessitated interviewing the “enemy” and finding their humanity, as well as the “democratic” forces in conflict.

Whatever the case or situation, the impact upon Burchett, as an individual and as artist, would be inevitable. I have a sense that Democracy is only the tip of the iceberg, the beginning of a very personal journey to reclaim, deconstruct, reconstruct, the multiple forces that have pained, scarred and enriched his life, and a testimony to the intergenerational effects of war.

This exhibition has been facilitated by Mai Nguyen Long following her recent self-driven residency in Vietnam.

Film Screening “The Godfather Trilogy”

Fri 12 Dec 2014, 1 – 10 pm

Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents

51 Tran Hung Dao Str (4th floor), Hanoi

You are invite to the screening of film series The Godfather including The Godfather Part I, Part II and Part III on Friday 12 Dec at TPD.

Original language with English subtitles. The screening is for educational purpose and supportive to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.

About film

THE GODFATHER is a 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by Albert S. Ruddy from a screenplay by Mario Puzo and Coppola. Starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino as the leaders of a fictional New York crime family, the story spans the years 1945-55, concentrating on the transformation of Michael Corleone from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia boss while chronicling the Corleones under the patriarch Vito.

THE GODFATHER: PART II is a 1974 American crime epic produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola from a screenplay co-written with Mario Puzo, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Partially based on Puzo’s 1969 novel The Godfather, the film is both sequel and prequel to THE GODFATHER, presenting parallel dramas: one picks up the 1958 story of Michael Corleone (Pacino), the new Don of the Corleone crime family, protecting the family business in the aftermath of an attempt on his life; the prequel covers the journey of his father, Vito Corleone (De Niro), from his Sicilian childhood to the founding of his family enterprise in New York City.

THE GODFATHER: PART III is a 1990 American crime film written by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola, and directed by Coppola. It completes the story of Michael Corleone, a Mafia kingpin who tries to legitimize his criminal empire. The film also weaves into its plot a fictionalized account of two real-life events: the 1978 death of Pope John Paul I and the Papal banking scandal of 1981-1982; both are linked with the affairs of Michael Corleone. The film stars Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, and Andy García, and features Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, George Hamilton, Bridget Fonda, and Sofia Coppola.

Launch of Sustainable Fashion Line “Seeds” at manzi

Launch event: Fri 12 Dec 2014, 8 pm

Textile installation: 12 – 30 Dec 2014

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

You are invited to the launch of sustainable fashion line and textile installation called SEEDS at Manzi. This new line uses traditional textiles and techniques to create a contemporary and elegant mens and womens collection.

To produce SEEDS Kilomet 109 worked with local artisans from Vietnam’s remote Northern highlands to incorporate, and thus help preserve, endangered methods of fabric dyeing, weaving and embroidery. By doing so we strive to reimagine the boundaries between cultural preservation and reinvention. The result is an exciting contribution to Vietnam’s fashion scene.

The idea behind SEEDS was born from the close relationship between the raw materials used to create the textiles, to the process of weaving, dyeing, beezwax printing, and all the way to the creation of the design sample and the 3D prototype.

The installation portion of the SEEDS exhibition is reconstructed in a three dimensional format, integrating all of the raw materials and techniques that were used in the garment design. Next to this will be displayed illustrations that lay out the recipe and the ingredients used to create the pigments and dyes.

The SEEDS collection is heavily influenced by a European sensibility regarding garment structure combined with the versatile functionality of streetwear. Most of the detailed finishing and decoration, however, has been adopted from the traditional dress of the people of Vietnam. Some of these details include the buttons taken from the neckline of the Thai women’s blouse, contours and slopes of the Nung men’s shirt, beezwax prints of the Dao Tien dress , the dense array of color coordination borrowed from the Lo Lo people , and the thin line button loops with transparent glass buttons inspired by the Trang An ao dai. But these traditional elements are designed to be ambiguous , or are even hidden somewhere in the design to create a special connection between the wearer and the piece, between functionality and decoration, and between the traditional and the contemporary.

SEEDS will bring the audience a view of the collection from the inside out.

SEEDS-collection-3 Launch of Sustainable Fashion Line Seeds at manzi

SEEDS will be launched at manzi art space at 8.00 pm, Friday, 12 December 2014. By invitation only.

SEEDS installation series will be on display at manzi till 30 December 2014.

A Night at the Opera – The Marriage of Figaro

Sun 14 Dec 2014, 7 pm

Hanoi Cinematheque

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Come to the screening of a classic version of The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro) by the composer Wolfgang Mozart.

The Marriage of Figaro, based on the stage play by Pierre Beaumarchais, premiered in 1786 and was the first of three operas composed in collaboration with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. The story is a follow-on to The Barber of Seville, the first of Beaumarchais’ trilogy. In the first of the plays, Figaro works with the Count Almaviva to win the hand of the lovely Rosina. Now three years later the honeymoon is definitely over and the Count has his eyes on Susannah, who happens to be Figaro’s betrothed. The Count’s ally has become his foe, and Figaro schemes with Susannah and the Countess to expose the Count’s licentious behavior.

The opera is a classic “numbers” opera with musical pieces stitched together by semi-spoken dialogue to move the comedy through a single crazy day. Countless musical pieces are familiar to anyone with an introduction to opera highlights. The composer Brahms wrote “In my opinion, each number in Figaro is a miracle; it is totally beyond me how anyone could create anything so perfect.”

Language: The opera will be screened in the original language with English subtitles.

For those with membership at the Cinémathèque, make a reservation as usual by phoning the Cinémathèque, daily between 14:00 – 21:00 at 3936-2648. A limited number of tickets are also available through the Opera Guild, send an email to info@hanoioperaguild.com. A donation of VND 60,000 is suggested.

Exhibition “Typography”

13 and 14 Dec 2014, 9 am – 6 pm

Museum of Ho Chi Minh

We face typography every day and everywhere, whether it is in our daily life or at work, on a billboard, in the newspaper or on the smartphone. “Whether the letters are small or big, bold or with serifs, whether they are red or green, all the things that we see will have an impact on us unwittingly and we will memorize them without noticing it”, said Erik Spiekermann (typographer and design legend, awarded with the TDC Medal 2011). That is the reason why we should have a more wittingly look at typography. A perfect occasion to do this is the annual exhibition of the Type Directors Club, where the best and most interesting designs of the year in the field of typography and graphic design will be shown.

The Type Directors Club invites everyone to attend a public showing of its sixtieth annual typography exhibit, TDC60, and the selections of the annual typeface design competition, TDC 2014 at the Goethe Institute Hanoi.

There was a total of over 2000 entries from 43 countries, 209 works from 18 countries were selected. Germany with its more than 40 honorees ranked in a high position in comparison to the other international participants this year. The winners will also be included in 7 exhibitions touring cities in the United States, Canada, France, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Spain, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The annual awards competition of the Type Directors Club presents the best typographic designs in the world. Long a favorite of the design community, the awards are renowned for the quality of their selections and the accompanying annual book published by the TDC.

The exhibition addresses all professionals and students who work in the field of graphic design, advertising, marketing, communication, multimedia, publisher, education and who are interested in the written word.

Conductor: Honna Tetsuji

and Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra

This year the music world celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of German composer Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949). In honor of this occasion and in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra will present the Vietnam premiere of two pieces by Richard Strauss: the Horn Concerto No. 2 and An Alpine Symphony, op. 64. The solo part will be played by Premysl Vojta, one of the most outstanding musicians in this discipline in Germany. With this piece he won the renowned ARD Music Contest, which marked the starting point for his successful career in Germany and in international concert halls. In addition to experiencing Premysl Vojta in concert on the 12th and 13th of December, music enthusiasts can also attend an artist talk with the musician on December 10th at the Goethe-Institut. There he will speak about his music career, his relationship to Richard Strauss and his favorite composers in contemporary music.

Richard Strauss composed his Horn Concerto No. 2 towards the end of his eighth decade of life. Its gentle serenity clearly identifies it as one of his later works, but at the same time Strauss looks back at his youth with this piece, which premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 1943. And precisely that is the special appeal of this composition. An Alpine Symphony offers listeners an impressive tone picture, in which the different stages of a mountain hike are transformed into music: the ascent to the peak at and the path back down the mountain as night falls.

Showcase of Muong Ceramics

Opening: Fri 12 Dec 2014, 5.30 pm

Exhibition: 12 – 18 Dec 2014

MODULE 7

83 Xuan Dieu Str, Tay Ho, Hanoi

The Muong’s Cultural Museum, Muong Studio and Module 7 cordily invite you to the Showcase of Muong Ceramic.

Since Ly – Tran Dynasty (from the 11th to 12th century), Vietnam has been well-known for its tradition of ceramics with many products of white, celenon, brown, and blue salt glaze. Nowadays, ceramics is an arts language and material to some artists. Their recent works have gone beyond the traditional design, performances, and senses.

Muong Ceramics is named after experimental pottery, and this is the result of hard work by two artists with the same name of Hieu. Traditional materials like clay, water, glaze, ash, and hand-building techniques are used to create Vietnamese ceramics works.

Muong Ceramics is a product of Muong Studio of Ceramics, an Arts Centre at the Muong’s Culture Museum. In collaboration with Module 7, these works will be exhibited with interior products, that are designed and made in traditional craft villages and held long-standing cultural values of traditional artisanal know-how with a resonance of modernity.

Muong Studio of Ceramics was opened in September 2014 for Vietnamese and international artists participating in the artist-in-residency program. Muong Ceramics with initial pottery works, is an prerequisite for a huge Workshop of Artistic Ceramics in 2015. The workshop will gather many international artists from Asian Ceramic Network to collaborate with Vietnamese artists at Mường Studio.

This event is made possible with the generous support from Module 7.
