Film Screening at Manzi – The Sound We See: A Hanoi City Symphony
Sun 12 Jan 2014, 8.30 pm
Manzi Art Space
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi
To kick-start our new series of experimental movie and video art screenings entitled CHIẾU BÓNG (Vietnamese for cinema), we are bringing you THE SOUND WE SEE: A HANOI CITY SYMPHONY, a cinematic exploration of the dynamic urban environment of Vietnam’s capital, made in partnership with Hanoi DocLab & the Echo Park Film Center (EPFC).
For a month, 18 local filmmakers worked together to document the rhythm and movement of daily life in Hanoi from their unique perspectives. Dividing the day into its two-dozen hours, participants shot locations they felt best represented the city at each particular time of day and night with each hour becoming one minute in the final film. The result is a spectacular 24-minute journey through Hanoi as it has never before been experienced, shot on black and white Super 8 motion picture film and hand-processed by the filmmakers on-site at DocLab.
Apart from this film, January’s CHIẾU BÓNG is also bringing you a series of experimental short films by Hanoi Doclab’s film makers entitled ‘Four Windows’. With the concept of looking out the window to see different worlds, the films is part of a kaleidoscope of many-fold observations of every-day Vietnamese life. An experimental approach, a stringent documentary reflection or even a documentary staging – the directors choose themselves.
Free entry – seats limited.

Exhibition “Venus in Vietnam: Vu Dan Tan and Nguyen Nghia Cuong”
Opening: Fri 10 Jan, 6 pm with an introduction by Iola Lenzi
Exhibition: 11 – 24 Jan 2014, 9 am – 6 pm
Art Talk: Sun 12 Jan, 3.30 pm
HCMC Fine Arts Museum
97A Pho Duc Chinh, D1, HCMC
Installation and sculptural work by Vu Dan Tan and by Nguyen Nghia Cuong, focusing on the image of femininity. The exhibition compares and contrasts the works of two Hanoi artists a generation apart.
Originally organized in 2012 in Hanoi by Goethe-Institut and curated by Iola Lenzi in collaboration with Vu Dan Tan Foundation, the critically acclaimed exhibition Venus in Vietnam moves this coming January to the Museum of Fine Arts, Ho Chi Minh City. Venus in Vietnam- Ho Chi Minh will mark the first ever curated institutional presentation of seminal contemporary artist Vu Dan Tan in the South.
The exhibition Venus in Vietnam features works by Vu Dan Tan (1946 -2009), that are still very little known in Vietnam: Delicate cardboard suits and miniature installations of female figures in glass-lidded cigarette boxes.
Vu Dan Tan, whose multi-media cross-disciplinary practice broke new ground in the 1980s with its playful and conceptual use of found materials, is a leading artists of Vietnam’s post-doi moi scene. In Venus in Vietnam Goethe Institut presents Vu Dan Tan’s internationally-exhibited Fashion series, yet widely unknown in Vietnam.
Nguyen Nghia Cuong (b. 1973), a graduate of Vietnam Fine Arts University, is known for his ironic approach to contemporary reality, dominated by consumerism and brand-culture. Here he presents his recent painted card box series Beauty High Quality investigating the intersection between popular culture, advertising, and life and society.
The present exhibition showcases works focusing on female iconography and sexuality, and these two themes’ expanded meaning in the social and cultural context of late twentieth century-early 21st century Vietnam. Vu Dan Tan’s key works of the last decade, juxtaposed with new works by Nguyen Nghia Cuong, together offer a so far little-explored but art historically relevant perspective on the role played by gender, sexuality and woman in Vietnamese visual art of the turn of the century.
Venus in Vietnam: Vu Dan Tan and Nguyen Nghia Cuong is documented by a comprehensively illustrated catalogue including an essay by Southeast Asian contemporary art specialist Iola Lenzi, a researcher and a frequent curator of Vu Dan Tan.

Exhibition “The Broken Chapters” by Visual Artist Nguyễn Trần Nam
Opening: Mon 06 Jan, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: 06 – 26 Jan 2014
Manzi Art Space
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi
In collaboration with Hanoi Grapevine, Manzi art space is proud to present ‘The Broken Chapters’ by visual artist Nguyễn Trần Nam – one of the second-wave contemporary artists in Hanoi.
The exhibition space, bare and colourless. A video of a bullet ripping through the air, looped and muted. Texts describing the very moment before, during and after one is executed, detailed and handwritten. A home video of a father and son bonding moment, found and slowed down. A group photograph of young men, smiling and almost washed out. A conversation between a father and his son, absurd and mounted on the walls.
These are part of THE BROKEN CHAPTERS, a showcase of new artworks by Nguyen Tran Nam currently taking place at manzi art space from 06 – 26 January 2014. Rooted in the stories of his own, but reaching out to tell the stories of others, Nam’s work is personal yet universal, dealing with themes such as violence, death and the father and son relationship. Using the notion of war as a backdrop, Nam offers a perspective on how ideologies and beliefs could shape a generation’s identity and perception, whilst demonstrating the gaps, the missing pieces and the powerful bonds between one generation and another, regardless of how isolated or far-removed they are – or desire to be – from each other. With a recurring interest in war novels and film, and inspired by his father’s experiences as a military engineer during the Vietnam-America war and later as a propaganda painter, the artist took on the role of both a memory excavator and a fiction storyteller, weaving real-life details with made-up stories to form an imaginary realm unbound by truth, place or time.
Born in 1979, Nguyen Tran Nam is considered one of the second-wave contemporary artists in Hanoi closely associated with Nha San Studio (now re-named Nha San Collective) – one of the first artist-led experimental art spaces of Northern Vietnam. Since graduating from the Vietnam University of Fine art in 2003, Nam has been producing a diverse body of multimedia work, which takes inspiration from his own experience coming from a working-class family, growing up in the countryside of Hung Yen province and later migrating to the capital to study painting. At times dark and heavy, others playful and sarcastic, his work makes visible both past and present-day social, political and historical issues of Vietnam, while highlighting the individual tales of and human relationships between people who often belong to the lower class of society such as labourers, farmers, engineers. Selected exhibitions include ‘Hinterland’, Luggage Store Gallery, San Francisco (2012); ‘Gap’, Nhasan Studio, Hanoi, Vietnam (2010); ‘Indefinitely’, Ryllega Gallery, Hanoi, Vietnam (2008).

Exhibition “Friends”
Opening: Sun 05 Jan, 4 pm
Exhibition: 05 – 20/01/2014
Exhibition Hall, 16 Ngo Quyen Str, Hanoi
13 years ago,the first “Friends” exhibition was held. These exhibitions have since provided an opportunity for the students of the 7-year training program of the Vienam Art University (also called Yet Kieu Art University) to exhibit jointly. From 2000 on, this exhibition have been held every second year.
Participating artists: Le Van Thin, Tran Luan Tin, Phan Thiet, Pham Mai Chau, Nguyen Thanh Quoc Thanh, Doan Hong and Nguyen Dang Dung.
The artist Le Van Thin manages to be both dynamic and cool with his technique of painting in lacquer on wood. His painting technique may be traditional but he has an unique and beautiful style. The years at the battle front had imbued Le Van Thin’s artworks with many strong emotions.
The artist Pham Mai Chau “expresses” his thoughts and his feelings through a medium both practical and fantastical.
The artist Nguyen Dang Dung “translates” his emotions and thoughts “into wood” with the knife which his father left to him. Nguyen Dang Dung’s father used to be a well-known artist in Dong Ho village. His paintings are simple but always thoughtful. For him, the collaboration between tradition and modern trends is one of the most important problems need to be solved in his artworks.
There seems to be nothing that can make the artist Phan Thiet sad. As a matter of fact, this is the only way of looking at life for a person who has gone through much. He chooses to look on the bright side not only in life but also in the art. You can feel his optimistic outlook through his paintings.
Persisting on the road he has chosen, the artist Nguyen Thanh Quoc Thanh finds the way to best express himself is through the traditional lacquer on wood. He often uses romantic colours in his artworks but he also pays careful attention to realistic details in life.
The artist Doan Hong always looks kindly at people. He values everything in life around him. This can be seen in the way he takes loving care of colours and characters in his paintings.
For the artist Tran Luan Tin, he wants to metaphorize the love of people in today’s hectic life. He clearly intends to express two different spaces in each of his painting. one space is of his character’s. The other is of the background. And that is one way of looking at Tran Luan Tin.

With Small alley, Quiet alley, Railway, Raining street, Ancient street… Hanoi street alleys at present are sketched by Dang Van Quynh with full of face, vestige of each street. Realistic style with romantic trend, life breath is resounded from alley, through a view in details according to each lamp-post, motor, or a vendor. Using skillfully oil painting, but not making us of technique, he paints healthily, strongly and conclusively large fragments.
Nguyễn Trọng Tài’s paintings are lightly, soft relevant to tones of emotion, a voice of color combination and light rhythm. Each painting expresses a world of specific rhythm. Ballet-dancers mix with feelings, dances in fanciful, dreamlike and romantic space. Ballet-dancers in painting are very loveable. Viewers seem to mix with these tones of emotion. The artist doesn’t paint in details. The space is open, in order to create fancifulness. It is always interesting to view directly his works. Skillful combination between real and virtue creates impressive, soft and unique feelings.
