Opening of Pots ‘n Pans

From Koto: It is our great pleasure to invite you to come and experience our new KOTO alumni initiative called Pots ‘n Pans.

Pots ‘n Pans is a multi-level fine dining restaurant & lounge bar serving contemporary Vietnamese Cuisine with an international twist. It is a new and exciting addition to the KOTO family which is managed by a group of KOTO graduates, former street & disadvantaged youth of Hanoi – now resident professionals of the food & beverage industry in Hanoi.

Our main objectives are to contribute a share of our profits to KOTO’s training program along with supporting the further development of its graduated alumni.

Pots ‘n Pans will officially open its doors on Saturday 28th January, however from the evening of the Tuesday 17th until the 21st January, you are invited to be a part of the soft opening (RESERVATIONS ESSENTIAL). Our team at Pots ‘n Pans will be working hard on perfecting the menu and drink selection so we are inviting you and your friends  to come and join in on the fun.

New Year Program at Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology organizes a New Year Program in 2 days from 28 to 29 January 2012. It is a great chance to introduce to the general public traditional customs through games, activities, food testing…Especially, this time visitors will have an opportunity to explore more about traditional rituals of the people in Phu Tho area such as “xoan” singing, catching ells, making Vietnamese cake and many games of Cao Lan minority.

The program includes 16 traditional games from difference ethnic minorities such as Hmong, Ede, Thai… Besides, children will learn more about the 12 animals, draw on Bat Trang ceramic, etc. Vietnamese traditional cuisine is another fun thing to do. Visitors will have a chance to find out how to make special cakes of Phu Tho and many areas of Vietnam. In addition, visitors could also try on ethnic minorities’ costumes from Hmong, Dao, Thai, Phu La, etc and take photographs.

Films include “God of Love”, a whimsical tale of romance and darts, which won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short in 2011. “Incidence By A Bank” from Sweden, is a detailed and humorous account of a real life bank robbery. Filmed on an old decommissioned military submarine with 35mm cameras,”Deeper Than Yesterday”, a winner at Sundance, tells the story of a Russian crew who suffer a rather savage form of cabin fever. Local films include “The Rip” by Le Binh Giang, and the documentary, “Limbo” by Huy Le Khac.

Piano Recital of Marie Vermeulin

You are invited to the solo piano concert performed by the French pianist Marie Vermeulin. She has won the 2nd Prize in the International Olivier Messiaen in 2007, 2nd Prize in the Contest Maria Canals de Barcelone in 2006 and she is the one who has frequently been invited to perform in various international stage.

Student ofJacqueline Dussol, and then Marie-Paule Siruguet at Music Academy of Boulogne, she was the full time student from 2001 to 2004 at Lyon Music Academy under the guidance of Hortense Cartier-Bresson và Edson Elias. At the same time, she received training for 4 years with Lazar Berman. After that, she was under the guidance of Roger Muraro, and it was the time she learnt more about French works in the 20th century.

In December 2009, she was awarded with the prize “Pro Musicis” to bring precious moment to the disabled and the underprivileged who could not have a chance to attend classical concert.

Exhibition of Book Illustrations

You are invited to the illustration exhibition in the book “The Vietnamese Material Life” of the art researcher Phan Cam Thuong at Viet Art Center – 42 Yet Kieu, Hanoi. The exhibition displays the original design of the Vietnamese equipment and daily tools during his research time together with the blue prints from Henri Oger’s book “An Nam’s Technique” which was published in the beginning of 20th century.

The exhibition will be open during Tet holiday as an event to welcome New Year 2012.

You are invited to a lacquer painting exhibition of artist Michelle Pontie.

Artist’s statement: “To me, reaching back to the oriental thought, as closely as possible, is an imperious necessity. The coexistence of opposites grounds on Yin and Yang philosophy. Creating, with the dynamics of unconscious processes it includes, drives me for sure on a pathway from matter to infinity. My direct experience and deep personal resources drive me to question the body-spirit relationship, an inseparable and eternal duality.  My work is based on, boosted by and revealed through a seeking poise between matt and shiny, conscious reality and unconscious freedom, body and spirit, matter and energy”.

Art criticism about artist: One distinctive feature about Michelle Pontie’s art works is that they highly integrate both shares  of her Vietnamese/European cultural heritage. Indeed, once confronting their nature and quality, one becomes aware that they do not deal with a mere amount of “know-a-lot capital”. Here is abstraction of a minute and refined species, spreading out a meditative kind of magic, operating salutary  bewitching effects in a quiet, compelling way. The all process seems to spring from a long forgotten wisdom, possibly rooted back in far remote historical times when East and West used to be very close neighbors.
