On the occasion of the New Year 2015, Dong Phong Art Gallery is pleased to present several new works entitled “Winter Hues” by artist Ha Manh Thang. He has recently created these paintings with inspiration from the cold northern winter in Hanoi. This is a unique opportunity for you to see his visions of landscapes and nature from the places where the artist lives and experiences.
Below is the artist’s thought on the paintings in “Winter Hues”:
“In every scene, I’m observing the colour gradients and the passage of time in nature. The four seasons of the year each have their seasonal segments corresponding to four hues. There are myriads of colours in each hue and endless meanings to each colour.
And there are many forms to each meaning.
Every form consists of hues; and hues contain all forms at every single moment… At the moment, I’m painting Winter Hues.”
Ha Manh Thang (born in 1980) has a long history of cooperation with Dong Phong Gallery ever since he was a 4th year student in Hanoi Fine Art University. Since then, he has gained lots of success, and he is by now the most important young artist in Vietnam. About the film
Spirited Away is a 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.
The film was released on July 20, 2001, and became the most successful film in Japanese history, grossing about $330 million worldwide. The film overtook Titanic (at the time the top grossing film worldwide) in the Japanese box office to become the highest-grossing film in Japanese history with a ¥30.4 billion total. Acclaimed by international critics, the movie is considered one of the best films of the 2000s decade and one of the greatest animated films of all time.
It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival (tied with Bloody Sunday) and is among the top ten in the BFI list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 14.

Presented at the Work Room Four studio space in Hanoi this workshop will cover themes such as communication, concept, grant application, sponsoring, partnership development etc.
Once we get pas the boring bits the course will become more hands on as participants will be asked to draft proposals, present research and pitch their own concepts. At the end of the course, as a team, the group will organise from start to finish a small scale cultural event in a space outside of the classroom.
This course is to be presented by Elise Luong co-founder of Undecided Productions a Brussels based artistic events production house.

Note: The workshop starts from the 21st of January every Wednesday for 4 weeks.
The garments will be embedded in an elaborate multimedia space installation with elements from daily life in Vietnam as well as staged within a video performance on eight screens. Through the appropriation, usage, reservation and the disappearance of Ao Dais they acquired meaning and importance – now theirs stories will be told in this exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi.
In the interview installation eight individuals talk with each other about the Ao Dais without ever having met – like the 95-year-old court lady of the Empress and the 19-year-old student. Fictional conversations about preserving, time and the meaning of Ao Dais in their own lives develop.
Veronika Witte has been working in Berlin since 1998 in the fields of sculpture, video and scenic installations always blurring the lines between visual arts, music and opera. From 1988 to 1993 she studied at the Ecôle Nationale Supérièure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She received awards and grants in Israel, France and Germany, among others. Her scenic installations and performances were shown at the Museum Ludwig in Aachen, the Stadtgaleria in Saarbrücken, the Galerie Quang in Paris and the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bathanien in Berlin inter alia. In 2002 she held the position of visiting professor at the Ecôle Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts, Paris.
Thai Kim Lan was born in Hue and studied philosophy and German as a foreign language in Vietnam and Germany. 1976 she received her PhD in philosophy at the LMU in Munich and was teaching there until 2007 as a private lecturer for comparative philosophy. Since 1994 she has also been teaching in Ho Chi Minh City and Hue. She is co-founder of two associations for German-Vietnamese encounters. Besides her publications in the field of philosophy Thai Kim Lan wrote cookbooks, essays and poems and translated texts of German authors and poets, amongst them Bertolt Brecht. Poems from her own bilingual volume of poems “In einem kälteren Land – Lanh hon xu minh” (“In a colder country”) won prices in Germany and Vietnam.

Window, the latest work of Ta Huy Long – one of the leading comic illustrators in Viet Nam – tells the story of Hanoi some decades ago when Trang Tien Miscellaneous Goods Store was still open, electric trains still tinkled on the streets, and bicycle was the main transportation of Hanoian. The mischief, ambiguous paintings which bear the metaphor of re-birth, life transformation and flash as dreams in their busy lives will take the audience to a familiar Hanoi yet still very strange as it was a few decades ago.

Manzi art space is proud to present the exhibition entitled ‘Consciousness’ by Trinh Cung – one of the most important artists of Saigon before 1975.
‘Consciousness’ featuring Trinh Cung’s latest creations with 9 sketches and 7 large size oil paintings will mark the return of the man after more than 20 years long of absence in the local art scene.
‘I haven’t shown my work to public for a long time as I felt depressed with everything I created, so I wrapped them up, locked them in a tube, brought them along with me with the hope to find a heaven, for me and for them.
Now at the age of 77, I have realised that my artwork need to be free, they need to be alive and that’s why they are here, at manzi art space today’, said Trinh Cung.
By setting up an ambiguous interplay between foreground and background, transforming his canvas into a composition of loose, organic forms, in this series of work, Trinh Cung has created a perpetual motion, candidly confronting themes of identity, sexuality and the fear of loss and abandonment.
About the artist:
Born in Nha Trang in 1939 and graduated from the Hue Fine Art College in 1962, Trinh Cung has been considered one of the most important artists of Saigon before 1975.
Cung has widely exhibited in Hongkong, Singapore, Paris, London and across the United States. His recent works reflect more universal themes and expressions, though they are still suffused with the delicacy and poignancy of the Vietnamese esprit.
Trinh Cung now lives and works in Saigon. He also works as a visiting lecturer at the San Francisco State University, University of Massachusetts, University of California, Los Angeles, and the Indiana University.

‘Black Mist’ is inspired by a same titled poem of poet eL. The poem is a compression of coverting memories and obsessions from childhood until today, which to poet Phương Lan with pseudonym eL: “Mist is something that presents itself from birth, takes its place and shows its face among every observation of the surrounding world. To me it’s like a glass layer which refracts all existence, distances and isolates everything. It surrounds and conceals many truths under cover of darkness, a chronic, suffocating and dead-end nightmare.”
eL shared her poin of view to friends, who are also artists like her. They gave their different perspectives and language into the art works including: installation “Khẽ khàng thôi, đừng để chúng đập cánh” by Vo Tran Chau, 17 minute experimental video “Black Mist” by Dino Trung, and installation “Những chiếc lọ cảm xúc” by Ta Bach Duong.
The project creates a multisensory and obsessive dimensional space, which lets people to open their senses to feel their own “Black Fog”.
Specially in opening, eL is going to perform her poem under the support by artists Luong Hue Trinh and Nguyen Manh Hung.

Anne Marte Eggen grew up in Snåsa – a small municipality in the middle of Norway.
She has always been passionate about music and found herself particularly drawn to the electric bass. In 2008, her interest in music brought her to Fridhems Folkhögskola, Sweden where she studied jazz for two years. Later she took a bachelor’s degree in jazz electric bass at Malmo Academy of Music.
