Exhibition “The Paradox of the Gap”

Opening: Fri 12 Jul, 5 pm

Exhibition: 12 – 22 Jul 2013

New Space Arts Foundation

2nd Floor, Number 15 Le Loi, Hue City

You are invited to the painting exhibition “The paradox of the gap” by artist Jea Young Choi (Korea). Read the artist’s statement: From the contrast of a smile to the contrast of life…

In 2012, I was thinking a lot about finding a new opportunity for myself, so I stopped painting and started drawing pencil sketches. I thought, to express my ideas, the time-consuming process of painting lets the ideas at the moment slip away easily. When you have a first glance at my sketches, you might think that they are interesting, but when you take a closer look, they appear to be less amusing since they all imply contrasts. My artworksexpose the visible contrasts in every aspects, from the way people act, to their prejudice, capitalism, and their sexes. For heavy topics, I try to find a mild way to exhibit them so that the audience could perceive them easily. Avoiding the unnecessary expressions and only showing the implications/ concepts is one of my purposes. The reason why I do not use straightforward expressions but contrasts is because I want to give the audience the chance to think about it. If they think my artworks are funny, then they become amusing artworks, if they see the concepts, then they become artworks with inherent meanings.

After participating in the residency research program in India in 2012, my artworks in 2013 are united to center on contrasts, it is the gap in life. In many places, although classism has been suppressed class discrimination still exists and tremendously affects our lives, it is worse than the invisible power of money. It is sad to know the fact that we are all human beings, but our lives are controlled by money, so I started to think of a way to shorten the gap between people. In a money-dominated society, humans will not function if they do not, at least, get their compensation. It is like a contract. Sometimes money creates the phenomenon that breaks the living forms of society (ie holidays, relationships between people …..). What could be the plan that can solve all these problems? The answer is “The true compassionate heart” which represents love. In the relationships that money is not set above all, if we feel the love and the compassion, all problems are solved. My works in 2013 were started with the above components. Starting with “Gap”, the series makes people think by placing successful objects in capitalism and the opposite objects in the same screen, “How They Live”, my ongoing series creates a contrast of the relationship between silver and the spurned class by using silver, a technique in lacquer painting that I have been doing at New Space Arts Foundation. Unlike “Gap” series, “How They Live” series is not about the opposition objects, but it is the story of the prestige of labor (how to perceive them), the contrast between the objects and the materials by drawing the spurned class on silver background. Silver is expressed diversely, sometimes it is a river, places of life, harassing sunbeams, and sometimes partitions giving deep atmosphere. To get beautiful and varied shapes, in “How They Live” series, I mainly used small-size panels. “How to help” is the series I’m planning to do when my thinking is developed. This section describe how the richer in the contrast pairs help the poorer. Although the three series (Gap, How to live, How to help) are slightly different in the ways they are expressed in each section, the outcomes are the same thinking circuit as I mentioned above. Even if my works are only able to give people a chance to think a little bit about human love, I will take it as satisfying.

Exhibition “One Planet” by Nguyen Manh Hung

Opening: Sat 06 Jul, 6.30 pm

Exhibition: 06 – 28 Jul 2013

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

In collaboration with Galerie Quynh, Manzi art space and Hanoi Grapevine are proud to present ‘One Planet’ by visual artist Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng – one of the most important young artists in Vietnam.

‘One Planet’ features Hùng’s new sculptural installations which was on show in Ho Chi Minh City early this year and a series of paintings which the artist himself refers to as ‘Mauvais Gout’ (‘bad taste’) entitled ‘We’ve been here’

Drawing from his own personal history growing up in a cramped Soviet style apartment block in Hanoi, Hùng reflects on the idea of community, the conflicts that exist within and without constructed societies, and the complexities of civic development and individual responsibility. How is a community defined? Is the traditional idea of community just hollow rhetoric or an ideal that can evolve and adapt to modern day Vietnam? Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng confronts these issues with his trademark irony and humor highlighting the oftentimes absurdity of human behavior and endeavor.

‘When I make art I often use factors that relate to my family’s past as starting points. These factors contain and reflect both the history of my country, and its consequences’ Hung said.

‘Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng stages Vietnam’s past and present like a distinct planet in his unique way, never tragic to crave sympathy or mercy but always with the uttermost satire’ quoted from a review by Arlette Quynh -Anh Tran.

“One Planet” in Hanoi is brought to you by the Prince Claus Fund for Culture & Development.

Born in Hanoi in 1976, known as one of the most important contemporary artists in Vietnam, Hùng has exhibited in a number of regional and international exhibitions including the Goethe-Institut, Hanoi, Vietnam; ARKO Art Center, Seoul, Korea; ifa Galleries, Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany; Stenersenmuseet, Oslo, Norway; ZKM Center for Art and Media; Karlsruhe, Germany; and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, California, USA. His diorama Living in Paradise is currently being featured in the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia.

The First Meeting of Film Studies Group (FSG)

Fri 05 Jul 2013, 6 – 9 pm

C0 Seminar room

Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học

Ba Đình, Hà Nội

After the launch of DocLab Film Studies Group (FSG) in the MiniDOCfest, the first meeting of the group, planned as an initial exploration of “Film and Reality”, will be organized on Friday, July 5th 2013, from 18h to 21h, at C0 Seminar room- Goethe Institut – 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ha Noi.

Since this meeting, Hanoi DocLab FSG will meet regularly every six weeks, discussing three intertwining major themes in film studies: Representation (Film and Reality, Film and Gender, Film and Race, etc.), Aesthetics (Editing, Personal Film, Essay Film, Experimental Film, etc.), and Film Criticism Discourses. The plan for each meeting will be communicated to you at least three days before the event.

We encourage a space that treasures every speaking being. Your free expressions about film and filmmaking will be valuable contributions. There will be no so-called “master language” framing the discussions. Instead, we expect the vibration, clash, interaction and non-interaction of languages on the moving image.

Issue No 1: Film and Reality

The relationship between “film” and “reality” is a recurrent issue in discussions about film. Figuring out the possibilities of this relationship is challenging, whether to make film or to enjoy film. Words such as “film” and “reality” open up plenties of colors and flavors of meanings. For an initial investigation into the relationship between film and reality, the first meeting of Hanoi DocLab FSG invites you to watch several short films and exchange your thoughts on how the filmmakers approach reality. Your conversations will constitute the main body of the meeting. Apart from that, based on the screened films, the film selecter will share her personal stories and briefly introduce some common concepts in film studies such as “discourse”, “anthropology”/ “ethnography”, “critical”, and “reflexivity”.

Vietnamese will be the main language for the meeting. However, as many participants can speak English, the meeting does not exclude English.

Facilitater: Phùng Hà Thanh, a DocLab member, currently a PhD candidate in Educational Studies at Michigan State University.

Free Entrance.

“Unit asia” is a hybrid jazz band which consists of five outstanding musicians from Asia; Japan, Thailand and Malaysia. The band was formed in October 2008 to aim for “creating a new type of jazz music” and has been actively touring around the globe. Their first-time tour in Vietnam in February 2012 received enthusiastic applause and thanks to Tung Duong, it became one of the legendary concerts in the history of jazz scene in Vietnam.

The music style of “unit asia” is based around jazz, but they have managed to incorporate diverse musical elements such as rock, pops, blues and so forth into their music, enabling them to create their own original sound that exceeded the framework of nation, culture and musical genre.

Isao “SANKICHI” Miyoshi (guitar/Japan)

Koh Mr. Saxman (saxophone/Thailand)

Tay Cher Siang (piano/Malaysia)

Shigeki Ippon (bass/Japan)

Needless to say, Tung Duong, Singer of the Year 2011 and Dedication Award for Song of the Year 2012 (“Chiec Khan Pieu”), is a perfect choice for “unit asia”. His emotional and strong voice will skillfully interplay with sounds of “unit asia” and will enrich its musical diversity as a whole.

Exhibition: 01 – 14 Jul 2013

Casa Italia

The exhibition “Heavy Rain”, in which Anna started a dialogue between her art and the figures and the signs created by the children.

Anna Borghi was born in Italy in 1980. She graduated in 2004 in Painting and in 2010 in Cultural Heritage, both degrees obtained at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, in Milan. She started to work with galleries in 2003 while she was still student. She won national awards and now her artworks can be found in remarkable private international collections.

She started to work with children in 2005. Two years later she moved to Spain, then in 2010 to Vietnam. Here she met children of “Pho Cap” School, a small school for street children located in HCMC. This school helps disadvantaged children, and it was opened in 2001 by three Vietnamese teachers with the support of the local authorities.

Since 2011 Anna has been teaching art in this school. She teaches with a strong method, in which students start a journey not only towards the masterpieces of international artists, but also exploring themselves. This experience created a massive change in Anna’s life and began a strong interaction between her artworks and the children’s works.
