Sun 19 Jul 2015, 6 pm
Nha San Collective
2nd floor, 24 Ly Quoc Su, Hanoi
Nha San Collective would like to invite you to the screening of “The Artist Is Present” documenting a performance of artist Marina Abramović.
Marina Abramović (born November 30, 1946) is a Serbian performance artist based in New York. Her works explore the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. Active for over three decades, Abramović has been described as the “grandmother of performance art.” She pioneered a new notion of identity by bringing in the participation of observers, focusing on “confronting pain, blood, and physical limits of the body.”
Abramović performing “The Artist Is Present”, Museum of Modern Art, March 2010.
From March 14 to May 31, 2010, the Museum of Modern Art held a major retrospective and performance recreation of Abramović’s work, the biggest exhibition of performance art in MoMA’s history. During the run of the exhibition, Abramović performed “The Artist Is Present”, a 736-hour and 30-minute static, silent piece, in which she sat immobile in the museum’s atrium while spectators were invited to take turns sitting opposite her. Ulay – her former lover and collaborator of 12 years made a surprise appearance at the opening night of the show.
Abramović said the show changed her life “completely – every possible element, every physical emotion”.
Music Night with Kryshe, Simone Whetham and Sound Awakener
Sat 18 Jul 2015, 8 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
Come to “Live From The Forest”… with Kryshe, Simone Whetham, and Sound Awakener.
sonic explorations – ambient soundtracks – raw material manipulations
KRYSHE
Kryshe’s exquisitely subtle and detailed ambient work resonates with chilly grandeur. Across spacious vistas reminiscent of the collaborative work of Eno and Budd, delicate yet assured melodies unfurl before being subjected to delicate manipulation. This is enveloping, minimal music with a fragility that belies its emotional potency.
SIMON WHETHAM
For almost a decade Simon Whetham has developed a practice of working with sound recordings as a raw material for composition and performance. These are often environmental sounds he has captured employing a variety of methods and techniques, in order to obtain discreet or obscured sonic phenomena. More recently, when presenting work in a performance or installation, for him the space and the objects within become instruments to be played.
Simon has a number of works published through labels including Crónica, Line, Dragon’s Eye and Entr’acte; performed extensively internationally; collaborated with musicians, performance artists, painters, video artists and dancers; given listening and field recording workshops in UK, Estonia, Colombia, Chile and Australia; and received a large number of commissions and awards for projects and installations – notably for the project “Active Crossover”.
He had had a live concert in Hanoi and a performance in HCMC in 2012.
SOUND AWAKENER
“Sound Awakener” is an experimental music project of Nhung Nguyen from Hanoi.
In this project Nhung tends to create an endless and possibly dark sonic world and time/space deformation by using field recordings, instrumentation and manipulation. This results in a variety of different moods in her music – from soft, soundscapes – based tracks to harsh ones. In some cases, she pushes the sounds to their limits with concrete, dynamic and complex approach.
With highly-concentrated textures, rich layering and precise sound arrangement, Nhung Nguyen explores different methods of musical development to enable a pure form of sound – creating and listening.
“Sound Awakener” has participated in a live music night in Hanoi and an experimental music night for Nepal earlier this year.

Choose To Move
09 AM,01 June - 06 PM,30 July
Saigon Domaine 1057 Binh Quoi, Binh Thanh Dist., HCMC
San Art is presenting the works of resident artists Tran Tuan (Hue), Ta Minh Duc (Hanoi), and Orawan Arunrak (Bangkok, Thailand) in Session 6 of the San Art Laboratory program entitled ‘Choose to Move’. Encompassing installations, videos, and photography, the exhibition investigates the power of self reflection juxtaposed against distinctive social and historical contexts in Vietnam.
Tran Tuan responds to the family story that has persistently followed his life and practice, only this time he chooses to experiment with video installation.
For Ta Minh Duc, who was born in the 90s, Vietnamese history is visualized differently. In his video, obsessed with a folk story where a wild pig rescues itself from being trapped, Duc set out to ‘hunt’, inspired by the animal’s exceptional will.
Meanwhile, Orawan Arunrak from Thailand is curious about the history of Vietnam. His work, The Owner, is an installation of 30 drawings representing people’s dreams displayed on two doors and a dozen bricks - the very foundation of a home.

Nha San Collective proudly presents an “Open studio” session by photographer Binh Dang.
This July, Binh Dang will present his photography project started from 2014 in the form of open studio and exhibition. Binh has worked with a DIY camera mechanism of taking portrait photos of people’s faces deep in the water. He asks people to participate in this project, take them through an “unique photography experience” and the result is a photo series displaying various facial expressions, created by the same process of working and presenting. This series does not simply give a visual impression of the interaction between flesh and water but also makes the audiences recall the dawn of human-beings, back to the time when we were staying in our mothers’ wombs.
The project “Expressions” in its initial period has been chosen as one of the Contemporary Artists finalists within the Contemporary Talents prize of Foundation Francois Schneider and was also featured in a photography magazine – DODHO Magazine.
Bing Dang is one of the young photographers living and working in Hanoi. After graduating from University of Applied Art, Binh has been exploring and practicing documentary photography as a personal method of researching social issues. He has participated in well-known photography workshops like Angkor Workshop, Foundry Workshop, Panoramic Worskhop in the College of Arts in Eunic’s Open Academy Europe. Binh’s artworks have been exhibited in Paris, Phnom Penh, New Delhi, Hanoi,… and have been featured in various international magazines (Le Journal de la Photographie, Le Monde, Exposure Magazine…). Vietnamese Lacquer Painting Exhibition in Korea
Exhibition: 15 – 20 Jul 2015
Ganaisa Art Center
Seoul, Korea
From the organizer:
Lacquer paintings exhibition of 14 Vietnamese artists will be held in Ganaisa Art Center, Seoul from July 15 to July 20, 2015.
Lacquer is a special type of material extracted from lacquer tree, appeared in Vietnam from 2500 years before, often used in making furniture, worshiping items and crafts. In 1925 the French founded the Indochina Fine Arts School, along with the acceptance of the academy art in Europe, Vietnamese lacquer artists transformed the material and put lacquer on their own works. The innovative combinations between material and the traditional way of shaping, between the spiritual life of the Vietnamese and the graphics, layout, color as well as art thought from Europe have created an art material that still highly appreciated by many national and foreign researchers. Many Vietnamese lacquer paintings were stored and kept at national prestigious museums and abroad. More and more foreign artists come to Vietnam to learn the techniques of lacquer.
Due to limited communication, difficulties in transportation and storage as well as lack of thorough understanding and confusion between art and fine art, Vietnamese lacquer is still not known and properly appreciated as its value yet.
42 artworks of 14 Vietnamese artists to Korea will be displayed at Ganaisa Art Exhibition Center, Seoul. About the film:
The story of MINIONS by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment comes to us from time immemorial. Originally, from simple single-celled yellow organisms, Minions have evolved over the ages and served the most abject masters. Repetitive disappearances of these masters, from tyrannosaurs to Napoleon, made Minions plunge into a deep depression.
But one of them, Kevin, has an idea. Flanked by Stuart, the rebellious teen and adorable Bob, Kevin goes in search of a new evil boss to guide them.
Our three Minions embark on a thrilling journey that will lead them to their new master… who happens to be a master: Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock, Oscar-winning), the first super-evil master in history. From Antarctica to New York 60s, our three friends finally arrive at London where they will face the most terrible threat of their existence: the annihilation of their species.
