Showcase “Collection of Vietnamese Contemporary Paintings”

Exhibition: 29 Jul – 04 Oct 2014

Art Tunnel Gallery

6 Hang Trong Str, Hanoi

You are invited to a collection of Vietnamese contemporary paintings.

The arts of painting, if excluded the ideas and contents, are basically divided into two categories: realism and non-realism (abstraction). This always makes art lovers wonder about the abstract meanings of artworks. However, these non-realistic meanings are the factor contributing to the characteristic and the variety of artworks as well as making art lovers be attracted to the arts of painting.

To help art lovers find the answer for their questions, the organizer concretized the semi-abstraction and abstraction of artworks by selecting and organizing our paintings. Artworks in the collection are painted by Vietnamese artists in a range of media from traditional materials like lacquer, silk and dó paper to modern materials.

Artist Talk by Chou Chien Pang

Sat 26 Jul 2014, 5 pm

San Art Lab STUDIO

48/7 Pham Viet Chanh, Binh Thanh Dist, HCMC

“I used to draw while commuting when I was still a salary man. I am very comfortable with the fact that I could do some graffiti whenever and wherever I am. With the purpose of sharing the joy of creating and to enjoy the fun and peaceful atmosphere, I established a drawing group on Facebook and started to teach young children drawing, to paint on the walls of my rooms, to give people the artworks that I made for them freely as a gift. I am a newbie in the realm of art. Nonetheless I truly love creating and sharing, not to mention art itself. I have been questioning for my own way of making art by means of applying for art residence, getting myself involved in artist’s project, wandering galleries and making gallery maps. Sometimes, I empty all my emotions and just draw the totems carved upon my heart.”

San Art Laboratory welcomes Chou Chien-Pang, exchange residency artist from Bamboo Curtain Studio, Taipei, Taiwan. Master of laws and now artist by practice, Chou Chien Pang brings to Vietnam his “Project Connection”, a visual dialogue, an interactive documentation realized by means of drawing, lettering, interview, photographs and digital communication with the local community he visits. Nicknamed ‘A Pang’, he will be with us for one month – Come share your stories, and perhaps become part of the narrative!

Chou Chien Pang was born in 1979, currently lives and works in Taiwan. He got his Law degree from National Chengchi University, took a nine-to-five job, immersed in politics years before turning his joy of sharing, his drawings, his wandering around galleries into strenuous art practice. The now-MA artist has participated in the 2013 Young Art Taipei at Taipei Sheraton Hotel in May 2013, the 12th Artist Fair at Shihlin Paper factory and Tainan Cultural and Creative Industry Park, Taipei and Tainan in October 2013, and most recently has a solo show at Lei Gallery, Taichung, Taiwan early July 2014.

Exhibition “Greek Mythology” and “Typography” Wearable Art Pieces at Lucy’s Dream

Exhibition: 24 Jul – 14 Aug 2014, 10 am – 10 pm

Lucy’s Dream

31 Hang Giay, Hanoi

The idea behind Lucy’s Dream is turning art created by Vietnamese Young Artists into wearable clothing pieces. For the second time since the first exhibition in June 2014, we have cooperated with local artists on the 2 subjects of “Greek Mythology” and “Typography”. The results are comfortable and eye-catching ready-to-wear silk clothes, printed with unique designs hand-drawn and digitally manipulated by our artist partners.

The design and manufacturing processes at Lucy’s Dream usually take from 3-5 weeks, from the first sketches by artists, to digital designs, to fabric sourcing, fabric pre-treatment, printing, post-printing treatment, cutting and sewing processes. Each wearable art piece at Lucy’s Dream is made with extreme care and love.

This is the story of how Lucy’s Dream came to life.

I was just another girl working full-time for a corporation when suddenly it dawned on me that my purpose in life was to create truly original made-in-Vietnam East-meets-West style wearable art.

By Mid-2012, I had gathered a great team, composed of young Vietnamese artists who wanted to make a difference in the fashion & lifestyle scene of Vietnam. Lucy’s Dream was born in December 2012.

We hand-paint, digitally trace and print our own designs on fabrics, and manufacture unique and whimsical lifestyle products out of these self-designed fabrics.

For 2 years of constant effort, we have grown Lucy’s Dream from an online platform at www.lucysdream.net to two (02) brick-and-mortar stores in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Please support Lucy’s Dream & support Vietnam’s manufacturing industry!

Artist Talk with Patricia Nguyen

Thu 24 Jul 2014, 7.30 – 9.30 pm

Nha San Studio

462 Duong Buoi Str, Hanoi

You are invited to the artist talk with Patricia Nguyen! She will be presenting about her experience and knowledge in performance art.

Artist Statement

Patricia Nguyen’s work explores the precarious tension between life and death in the journey of migration, conjuring story through ritual and experimentation with natural and manufactured objects.

Meditating on the precarity of life and death over the oceanic, salt | water weaves ritual and poetry as practices of conjuring memory. Through collection, extraction, filtering, and dispersion of salt water, I explore the tension between overwhelming abundance and scarcity. Juxtaposing the process of evaporating seawater to extract salt and cleansing rituals- my body becomes a site of where these tensions converge as the audience bears witness to divergent performances of oversaturation and extraction.

“Positive Mass”, and event inspired on an international event called Critical Mass. It is just a bicycle ride to promote cycling for all its positive reasons. Critical Mass is a cycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. The ride was originally founded in 1992 in San Francisco. The purpose of Critical Mass is not usually formalized beyond the direct action of meeting at a set location and time and traveling as a group through city or town streets on bikes.

In Hanoi, Positive Mass (PM) is called “Đạp cho sướng”, literally meaning cycling for pleasure. Bikers meet on the last Friday of every month at

St. Joseph Cathedral (Nhà thờ lớn) and travel around Hanoi following a prepared route with the ending point at the Cathedral. The first PM in

Hanoi started in Oct 2012. Since Oct 2013 PM has been hold in HCMC, Thai Nguyen and Son La.
