Improvised Experimental Trio at CAMA ATK

Thu 14 Jun 2012, 9 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

This Thursday 14 June, Vu Nhat Tan, Scott Ezell and Bush Lam will perform as an improvised experimental trio at CAMA ATK.

Not the most likely of bedfellows, composer Tan, poet/musician Ezell and drum’n’bass DJ Bush Lam have been thrown together by the Hanoi music scene. There may be a couple of decades and thousands of miles between where they’re coming from, but they’re all heading in the same direction.

Tan has recently returned from Los Angeles where he premiered his latest compositions Cracking Bamboo and Song of Napalm at Southwest Chamber Music’s “LA International New Music Festival”. It was the second time Tan had been asked to contribute to Southwest Chamber Music events, with two-time Grammy Award-winning conductor Jeff von der Schmidt responding to the mid-performance standing ovation Tan received in 2010 with “I’ve never seen anything like it in my career.” Song of Napalm is a piece set to Bruce Weigl’s well-known poem of the same name, while Cracking Bamboo is improvisational.
scott exell with VNTG

On Thursday, Tan’s improvised electric soundscapes will be accompanied by Scott Ezell’s spoken word poetry and acoustic guitar, while Bush Lam adds electric bass to the experimental mix. Scott has joined collaborations with Tan in the past, creating two albums as part of the Vu Nhat Tan Group with Martin Goericke, while Bush and Tan formed a similar partnership in ATK a few months back for the We Don’t Care About Music Anyway screenings. That said, this will be the first time the three have performed together, so the results could well be a complete surprise.

Help CAMA support creative new music at ATK this Thursday.

Screening of “Vietnam: The next Generation”

Tue 12 Jun 2012, 7.30 – 8.30 pm
Hanoi Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Friends of Vietnam Heritage is proud to present a special documentary on Vietnam’s young people by Sandy Northrop.

From the film website: Thirty years ago, the only future that awaited young Vietnamese was war. But how have those born in the war’s aftermath capitalized on the dividends of peace? The final film in Sandy Northrop‘s trilogy on Vietnam today, VIETNAM: The Next Generation profiles the lives of seven young Vietnamese, revealing the challenges, choices and dreams that shape their lives, and that of their generation.

Vietnam’s first post-war generation is coming of age, and its members—now in their 20s and 30s—are seizing opportunities unimaginable in their parents’ time. Communism is losing its relevancy, the doors of a free-market economy are opening and memories of the war are being relegated to the distant past. This generation, representing 80 percent of Vietnam’s population, is making up for lost time, exploring all the benefits and costs of their country’s new economic and cultural future.

The same young Vietnamese who once might have stood in line clutching ration coupons for their family’s rice allotment—people like refugee-turned-entrepreneur A Lan Dương and American-raised businessman Henry Nguyễn—now believe that living standards will be better tomorrow than they are today. Many start on a second college degree before they have completed the first. They finish their day jobs as waiters and head off for evening school to study English. Like voice student and newlywed Trần Minh Đăng, they flood into the cities from the countryside—15,000 of them each month—and the money they send back to their villages keeps millions of families off poverty’s doorstep.

Yet prosperity is nowhere close to reaching all young Vietnamese. VIETNAM: The Next Generation also follows construction engineer Lê Việt Tiến, who works to rebuild the Hồ Chí Minh Highway far from his wife and newborn child; Phạm Văn Vinh and his sister Loan, two of the thousands of children living on the streets of Hồ Chí Minh City; and Lê Thị Phượng, a rural farmer who lost a leg in a landmine accident and now struggles as the sole supporter of her entire family.

Screening of “A DREAM IN HANOI”

Thu 07 Jun 2012, 7 pm
Hanoi Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

You are invited to a special screening of A DREAM IN HANOI directed by Tom Weidlinger. Dr. Lorelle Browning said the subject of this fascinating documentary is visiting Hanoi, and he will join us for Q&A/discussion after the screening, along with Doan Chau, former head of Vietnam‚s National Dramatic Theater.
About A DREAM IN HANOI

Twelve years ago, Dr Lorelle Browning – a professor at Pacific University in Portland, Oregon – brought an American theatre company to Hanoi to stage a bi-lingual, bi-cultural production of Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, together with actors and a director from the National Theatre of Vietnam. The entire project was the subject of a fascinating and entertaining full-length documentary film, produced by San Francisco filmmaker Tom Weidlinger, entitled A DREAM IN HANOI.

Review by Jonathan Curiel, San Francisco Chronicle

“On paper, it seemed like an ideal arrangement: Take a theater company from Portland, Ore., send it to Hanoi in the fall of 2000 and have it collaborate with a renowned Vietnamese theater company on one of Shakespeare’s most illuminating plays, “A Midsummmer Night’s Dream.”

The result, as captured by documentarian Tom Weidlinger, was anything but smooth. In A DREAM IN HANOI, egos clash, cultural misunderstandings are common, and last-minute obstacles from the Vietnamese government threaten to derail a performance that had started out with such high hope.

American Shakespeare scholar Lorelle Browning, who spent five years arranging the co-production, is reduced to tears by the artistic confrontations that emerge in Hanoi, but there are epiphanies, too. Walking and motorbiking around Vietnam’s capital reveals a culture that is rich in sounds, sights and smells. A Vietnamese actress goes against her country’s tradition and loves displaying more affection on stage.

Weidlinger was in the right place at the right time. Who could have predicted that then-President Clinton would send a representative to rehearsals to gauge whether he should attend opening night? The visit adds a new layer of tension to the production — a tension that never lets up until the end of A DREAM IN HANOI, Narrated by F. Murray Abraham, this documentary is a treat to behold.

Piknic Electronik Season 2

Every Sun from 03 Jun – 11 Nov, 4 – 10 pm
Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower

We remember how much fun everyone had last year, sitting down on the grass and chilling with friends and
family and enjoying numerous genres of electronic music by the best
djs in the city and sometimes special guests.

This year we wanted to do something different, we remember how hot is was last year, so we hunted all over Hanoi to find a venue we would feel confident would help make this Piknic Electronik even better. We are very proud to now have found a place with swimming pools, lawned area, great food, affordable drinks and ample space for families and children. Whilst we
realize that the venue is a bit far out for folks in Tay Ho, we
managed to get free entrance for every Sunday to access the pools. So
grab a cab, load it with friends and come and enjoy the best place to be on Sundays. Your support is what makes us able to keep seeking ways to make Hanoi even more special.

Official CAMA 6 After Party

Sat 02 Jun 2012, 11 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi

CAMA festival 6 is no more than a hop, skip and jump away… but we all know that no festival as good as this one deserves to end before midnight.

Good news! THE OFFICIAL CAMA FESTIVAL 6 AFTER PARTY will rock on through the night, brought to you by hosts Hanoi Rock City. Featuring artists: DMN SLYR (California, L.A.), MACHETE.SEX.MIX (Hanoi) smp, R3 (Shanghai), SCRAMBLED EDGE (HCMC).

This is the date (stress on ‘the’) in Hanoi’s music calendar and this year and we’re licking our lips not only for the superb collection of international artists on the main festival line-up and the after party, but also for one of the strongest mixes of local bands we’ve ever seen… Go Lim, Machete and Zamina all deservedly winning their place on stage at the big day out.

To clink a glass in celebration of the rising Hanoi music tide, strut over to the buzzing after party at HRC from 11pm onwards and stay hip swinging under the all night stars to live band performances and DJ sets. Max out to Hanoi’s madmen, Machete, and groove it smooth with three natural born entertainers who have been setting alight some of the chicest cities on the globe respectively: DMN SLYR, R3 and SCRAMBLED EDGE.

Yep, yep, you can consider the rumour that there will be no DJs involved in this year’s CAMA fest now officially quashed, and keep rolling with all our favourite local and visiting music heroes and friends till the weekend is but a dry maze of empty drinks cartons, sleepy stage lights and, quite probably, a new favourite band or two.

BBQ, visuals, and lots of fun stuff will supplement the terrific sounds all night.

- Save yourself a taxi ride and travel in the party spirit by taking advantage of our FREE shuttle bus service from the American Club to Rock City. * Departure times TBA ★ ★

Karsten Krause, 2009, 4′, 8mm/Super 8/DV color

Philip Widmann, 2008, 9′, 8mm/DV color
A man, presumably of Vietnamese origin, travels Europe. Shortly after, American troops enter the ground war in Vietnam.

Memories
Sylvia Schedelbauer, 2004, 19′, Beta SP color

Give Me Back My Own Picture Perfect Memory!
LuiseDonschen, 2012, 25′, HD/DV/Super 8 color
While my father created a picture archive of my childhood, my grandmother destroyed the family photo albums just before her death. Stuck between these extremes, I venture out to question old pictures, to produce new ones and to find a perspective. My journey takes me to East Berlin, Poland and through Hamburg. This documentary deals with the shape of memory, the ease of forgetting and last not least, making films.

The Photographer’s Wife
Karsten Krause & Philip Widmann, 2011, 29′, HD/Super 8 color
GertiGerbert was photographed by her husband Eugen over a period spanning more than forty years. Besides the obligatory family photographs, from their wedding day until his death Eugen took countless pictures of Gerti: in her underwear, in homemade summer frocks, or completely naked; on the beach, in the woods, in the car, or on the floor at home. Using the Gerberts’ picture archive, interviews with Gerti, and Eugen’s notes, the film looks at what remains of life and love at the end.

From his studies  as an archivist in the Institute of Han Nom Research he now explores through his art the ramifications of a culture being lost through a script that is no longer read as Nom was replaced by the current Romanization of Vietnamese.

He also reflects on the unsettling ambiguity of using scripts introduced by conquerors firstly by the Chinese then the Latin script of the French We follow him unearthing ancient examples of the Nom scripts trying to find the original Vietnamese words behind them and then see him in his studio resurrecting the writing into a new art form and as a Vietnamese reclaiming his culture.

Following the success of the first three festivals in 2009, 2010 and 2011, this year 10 European countries (Austria, Germany, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Wallonia-Brussels (Belgium), UK) in association with the National Documentary and Scientific Film Studio of Vietnam, will present the 4th International Documentary Film Week in Vietnam, from 8th-18th June in Hanoi and from15th-17th and 21st -24th in Danang City.

Every night during the festival, audiences will be treated to one European and one Vietnamese documentary on the same theme. With a broad selection of themes, and focusing on the principle of a dialogue between Vietnamese and European documentary films, the organizers wish to present to Vietnamese and international film fans the vitality of documentary filmmaking, which has developed strongly in recent years. Documentary filmmaking has taken its place next to feature films as a genre in itself, with its own codes, techniques, and directors. The worldwide success of documentary films in recent years shows that audiences have truly embraced a “cinema of reality”.

Each screening will deal with different current issues. For example the German film “Work Hard – Play Hard” provides insights in the organisational structure of many companies and exposes the basic concept of the modern working environment. The Danish film contribution „Mechanical Love“ is a documentary on the interrelationship between robots and humans and the French documentary „Dans tes yeux“ follows the young, blind, journalist Sophie travelling with her dog Pongo to 40 unusual places around the globe.

This year the Festival will for the first time take place in Danang City.

Another new feature of this year’s Festival is the “Day of young Film makers” which will be devoted to films by young Vietnamese documentary film makers.

Now in its fourth consecutive year, the Documentary Film Festival in Vietnam has established its position in the cultural landscape of Vietnam and has become a very popular “rendezvous” for the public.

All screenings are free of charge.
