‘Encounter’ Presents Chitra Ganesh

Lecture 1: Architectures of myth: Fri 20 Jun 2014, 6.30 – 8.30 pm

Room NZ0903 (9th Floor)

Lecture 2: Visualizing absence: Tue 24 Jun 2014, 6.30 – 8.30 pm

Rm NZ0507 (5nd Floor)

Hoa Sen University

8 Nguyen Van Trang Street, W. Ben Thanh, District 1, HCMC

‘ENCOUNTER’ talk series welcomes Chitra Ganesh, Brooklyn-based multimedia artist currently working in New Delhi, with two lectures in June 2014.

Lecture 1: Architectures of myth

This lecture will explore the power of key visual and storytelling devices central to mythological narrative and their particular ongoing legacy in contemporary visual and popular culture. I will begin by looking at the architecture of the grand epics of classical Eastern and Western traditions, such as Homer’s Odyssey, the Ramayana and the Monkey King story. I will also look at images drawn from contemporary modes of storytelling to illuminate how ancient mythic architectures persist in the language of comics and graphic novels and how they are transformed in contemporary visual forms, examining such examples as the Amar Chitra Katha and Raj comics originating in India, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series and the graffiti and science fictional tales such as Battlestar Galactica.

Lecture 2: Visualizing absence

This lecture will consider how contemporary art practices take up the problem of visualizing absence by archiving and creating around social and political erasure. As artists and thinkers, how do we identify and respond to stories, social histories, and conflicts which we experience as crucial to our understanding of our own history, nation, or family, but yet seem difficult to extract from the public domain, or remain mysteriously absent from official records? I will frame this discussion via projects, challenges and key questions that animate ‘Index of the Disappeared’, a ten year collaborative project that is both a visual practice and discursive platform that foregrounds the difficult histories of immigrant, ‘Other’, and dissenting communities in the United States since September 11, 2001 – including a rapidly changing relationship to surveillance, illegal imprisonment and targeting extra-judicial killings. Through official documents, secondary literature, images, and personal narratives, we trace the ways in which censorship and data blackouts are part of a discursive shift to secrecy.

Language: English and Vietnamese translation will be provided

The event is free of charge. Seats inside the auditorium are limited. Please arrange to come early for the best available position.

Chitra Ganesh is a Brooklyn based artist currently living and working in New Delhi. Her drawing, installation, text-based work, and collaborations seek to excavate and circulate buried narratives typically excluded from official canons of history, literature, and art. Ganesh graduated from Brown University with a BA in Comparative Literature and Art-Semiotics, and received her MFA from Columbia University in 2002.

Ganesh’s work has been widely exhibited at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Shanghai), Brooklyn Museum of Art, Museum voorModerneKunst (Netherlands), ZKM (Germany), Royal College of Art (London), Prince of Wales Museum (Mumbai), and KunsthalleExnergrasse (Norway), etc…

Ganesh is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including a 2012 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in the Creative Arts.

Group Exhibition “Coming of Age”

Opening: Thu 19 Jun 2014, 6 – 9 pm

Exhibition: 19 Jun – 18 Jul 2014

Craig Thomas Gallery

27i Tran Nhat Duat, Tan Dinh ward, Q.1, HCMC

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11 am to 6pm; Sundays 1 to 5 pm; and by appointment

You are invited to a group exhibition “Coming of Age” featuring painting, sculpture and installation by fourteen Vietnamese artists.

“Coming of Age” is an eclectic mix of painting, sculpture and installation works realised specially for the 5th anniversary of the gallery. The artists on show include: Lieu Nguyen, Lim Khim Ka Ty, Tran Quoc Tuan, and Bui Tien Tuan, Pham Huy Thong, Bui Thanh Tam, Nguyen The Hung, Ngo Van Sac, Tran Minh Tam, established sculptor Bui Hai Son, expressionist painter Doan Hoang Lam and digital painter and illustrator Khoa Le.

About the artists

Lim Khim Ka Ty’s (b. 1978) paintings highlight Vietnam’s working class and examine the role of women in Vietnamese society. Her portraits are filled with a great compassion and empathy for the lives and struggles of the people that constitute the majority of the Vietnamese population.

Bui Thanh Tam (b. 1979) is concerned with the state of society in contemporary Vietnam. Charged with parody and humour, his pop-style paintings are caricatures of Hanoi’s nouveau riche class, with their greed for money and their mindless modernisation.

Lieu Nguyen’s (b. 1976) signature canvases are composed in an impressionistic style and depict blossoming trees in vibrant colours. His lyrical paintings are created using a unique “drip” technique that results in symphonies of colour and movement on canvas.

Luong Luu Bien (b. 1975) uses techniques learned from his study of lacquer painting to create an effect that is like sculpture on canvas. The figures in Bien’s works – often solitary individuals or groups of two or three – stand out from the canvas as if alive and independent of their surroundings. The effect draws the viewer closer to the subjects and gives them their own quiet but clear voice.

Pham Huy Thong (b. 1980) references socio-political problems in contemporary Vietnam and the world. His surrealist style paintings are a commentary on issues of greed, conflict, justice and social equality, charged with metaphorical meanings and hidden clues.

Tran Minh Tam’s (b. 1974) oeuvre is an homage to Vietnam’s rich historical and cultural tradition. His works, in oil and lacquer on antique wooden furniture, portray historical figures from the Nguyen dynasty, from emperors and mandarins to common people, in ancient palace settings.

Nguyen The Hung (b. 1981) creates works on do paper and canvas. His sensual, exotic paintings juxtapose traditional and contemporary media and references, and are a statement on the empowerment of women, their emancipation and self-confidence.

Bui Tien Tuan (b. 1971) works with watercolour on silk and do paper. His fascination with the female figure and urban life is revealed through his oniric ukiyo-e inspired compositions that introduce a new vibrant colour palette and a contemporary language to the traditional media.

Tran Quoc Tuan (b. 1981) creates multi-panel tableaus of everyday life in his native Saigon. With gentle contrasts between shade and light, his street scenes tell stories of the communal lifestyle down the small lanes and “blind corners” of the Southern metropolis.

Ngo Van Sac’s (b. 1980) practice centres around woodburning and woodcarving techniques. The artist creates multi-layered compositions, juxtaposing scenes of contemporary Vietnam with various facial silhouettes, which most often include his self-portrait.

Bui Hai Son (b. 1957) is an established Vietnamese sculptor. His oeuvre includes small scale to quasi-monumental sculptures, in a variety of media. Inspired mostly by nature and man’s relationship to it, his works develop organically and resonate in the space with an unobtrusive energy.

Khoa Le (b. 1982) is a digital artist, painter, illustrator and writer. Her works are playful in appearance, but with closer inspection they reveal a deep concern with personal and human issues, such as a girl’s coming of age, the relationship between man and nature, life and death, among others.

Doan Hoang Lam (b. 1970) is a painter from Hanoi whose oeuvre focuses on his strong emotional responses to life and to his surroundings. Through his work, the artist strives to communicate what hides beneath the surface and lies deep within our souls and hearts.

Artist Talk by Truc Anh

Wed 18 Jun 2014, 6 pm

Galerie Quynh

65 Đề Thám

District 1, HCMC

You are invited to an artist talk by Truc-Anh on the occasion of his current solo show “oNiReaKHoWaRiGNoRaLiSMe“.

Truc-Anh will discuss the major themes in his exhibition and some of the stories that have inspired the works. With a creative practice that reflects a dizzying world of sensorial memories and dreams, Truc-Anh makes work full of paradox moving between representation/abstraction, jubilation/despair, affirmation/ doubt, centred composition/all over painting and so on. Truc-Anh seeks beauty not through the harmony of forms but through emotional engagement, vulnerability, autobiographical stories and construction of personal mythology.

During his artist talk, Truc-Anh will encourage the audience to play an active role in sharing their own interpretations. A dialogue with friends in his social network has already begun, in fact, as Truc-Anh has been posting images of his new work on his Facebook page, posing the question ‘What do you see?’ With responses ranging from the comical to the deeply personal, this playful exercise touches on the theme of pyschoanalysis prevalent in the exhibition.

The event is free and open to public.

Language: The talk will be conducted in English with a Vietnamese translation.

Interview: Martin Nguyen talks about the very personal story depicted in his latest documentary Tomorrow You Will Leave due to be shown at the closing night of 6th

European-Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival.

There are points in life, at least in the lives of some people, that are perfect film material. Moments full of suspense, where life is open to unexpected twists of fate. Leaving

a home behind, to build a new life, is one such point. Especially if to reach that new life you had to travel thousands of miles, to cross the sea in a small open boat. To travel

from Vietnam and to end up in Austria.

This is the story of the family of Martin Nguyen, an Austrian filmmaker of Vietnamese origin, a story he chronicles in autobiographical documentary Tomorrow You Will

Leave.

The film follows Martin and his father’s journey to Malaysia to find a man called Ali who had been instrumental in the history of their family. A man who had helped them

move from the refugee camp in Pulau Bidong, where Martin was born in 1980, to where they live today. In looking for Ali, and in delving back into their past, the film traces

Martin’s parents’ journey from South Vietnam in 1979, via Malaysia to their life today as farmers in a tiny mountain village in Lower Austria.

& Of Other Things spoke to Martin about discovering his family history, the deception of memory and about being different. Click here to the read the interview on & Of

Exhibition “Breeding Season” by Thai Nhat Minh

Opening: Fri 13 Jun 2014, 6 pm

Exhibition: 13 Jun – 13 Jul 2014

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Manzi art space and ACCAviet are proud to present a solo show entitled “Breeding season” as part of a series of experimental works by sculptor Thai Nhat Minh.

Inspired by the breeding season, during which living creatures grow enlivened, elated, enraptured, when all crave unification, procreation and seek an escape from sorrow

and solitude, this series by Thai Nhat Minh aspires to portray the connection between sculpture and abstract notions of landscape, time, and mentality. An intimate

relationship – seemingly extraneous yet consistent between natural connections and those in contemporary life – one that remains clouded in everyone’s consciousness.

This series is the continuation of Minh’s experiment in landscape sculpture. In his exhibition “The birds” in 2013, Minh did not introduce his works as merely individual

shapes but rather a combination of chrome and wood sculptures, along with connected bamboo sticks – a material that is dear to every Vietnamese’s remembrance.

In “Breeding season”, Thai Nhat Minh continues to examine and further develop the connection between sculpture and space as two inseparable components. In a colonial

style villa, Minh has transformed this bar-cafe into his own creative area. The sculptures are installed in several locations within the villa: on tables and shelves, on walls,

installed solo or in groups in different rooms. Objects and spaces that often serve as background for people’s gatherings: table surfaces, blank walls, floors, even dark stair

corners become bearers of artistic ideas. Minh’s sculpture space then transforms into that of improvisation and interaction, provoking contemplation and self-reflection from

all creatures (objects, furniture, light, and humans) within this creative expanse where an amalgam of sculpture and space exists.

Figures made from pasteboard – Minh’s experimental material, harmonized with his recurrent sculptures are there to create an intimate atmosphere. Thai Nhat Minh’s new

works not only embody his venture with a material, but more importantly these sculptures express a more profound contemplation in shapes and spaces, which will bring the

artist closer into conceptual sculpture – a path that Minh hopes to pursue.

Thai Nhat Minh was born in 1984 in Tam Son, Lap Thach, Vinh Phuc. Minh graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 2009 with a Bachelor degree in Sculpture,

and went on to obtain his Master degree in 2012.

Minh began his career as a sculpture during his university years. Until now, he has had almost 10 years of artistic experience and has won numerous awards at many

exhibitions across the country. Minh also participated in various group exhibitions, art events, workshops, along with a number of important art projects.

Minh had his solo exhibition entitled “The birds” in April 2013 at Vietnam Fine Arts Museum. In addition, his works were also displayed at Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong in

March 2014, Affordable Art Fair Singapore in May 2014, Asia Contemporary Art Show at JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong in October 2010 and at Conrad Hotel Hong Kong in

May 2014.

country. Many teachers are persistently staying in remote mountainous villages to cultivate literacy in children of ethnic minorities including, among others, the H’Mong’s

and the Dao’s.

There are stories such as the one of Mr. Ma Seo Páo, who has walked over 100 kilometers together with 27 other H’Mong families from Din Chin, Muong Khuong, to where

the Lung Po stream enters the Red River to establish Lung Po 2 village in A Mú Sung, Bát Xát, Lào Cai; the dreamlike love story of teacher Nguyễn Vân Chi and lieutenant

Exhibition “Through the Windows of Life”

Opening: Sat 14 Jun 2014, 7.30 pm

Exhibition: 14 Jun – 15 Jul 2014, 9.30 am – 7 pm

Chula

43 Nhat Chieu Street (near West Lake), Hanoi

“Through the Windows of Life” is a photography exhibition from the Humans of Hà Nội project and the first of many to come. Consisting of more than 1000 pictures, each telling a story of a person, the intent of the exhibition is to depict the mosaic of life in the city, of people of all ages and backgrounds. We want to break down the social barriers and help people, especially the youths, to build a sense of acceptance, understanding and sympathy for other people.

Coming to the exhibition, guests will be immersed in the eccentric and ambient atmosphere of the Chula House and surrounded with walls of pictures depicting people in the midst of life. A cyclo driver with a refreshingly positive outlook on life, young people on their pursuit of big dreams, or the veterans who once sacrificed their lives for peace – those are just some of the portraits presented in the exhibition. Hanoi, a city with the population of 7 million people, is the grand picture of our exhibition, in which majestic shades and vivid, lively hues blend together to create a picture of 7 million colors.

Exhibition Through the Windows of Life 2

Concert “Mezzotono, Small Italian Orchestra without Instruments”

Mon 16 Mon 2014, 8 pm

Casa Italia

18 Le Phung Hieu, Hanoi

In the framework of the Program “Y-Viet 2014”, the Embassy of Italy is delighted to announce the concert by “Mezzotono, Small Orchestra without Instruments” due to be held at “Casa Italia” on the 16th of June at 8 p.m.

“Mezzotono, Small Italian Orchestra without Instruments” is composed of five young Italian artists who perform just with their voices, with no use of musical instruments. The peculiar feature of this technique, so called “a cappella”, implies that the human voices reproduce the different instruments, according to the special kind of approach of the five interpreters.

The unique atmosphere encourages audience to actively participate to the show, becoming part of the Orchestra itself.

The Orchestra proposes a rich repertoire which offers a journey through a variety of different styles. Spanning from jazz to bossanova, along mambo, tango, big-band style and classic music, all the songs are performed in an original interpretation by virtue of the arrangements and the unpredictable contribution of the rhythmic-vocal section.

“Mezzotono” has been presenting its music in several Italian and foreign theaters and the artists have been holding seminars and master classes in Universities all around the world focused on the “a cappella” musical technique.

In October of 2008 the group was selected as one of the ten best in Italy and was invited to the realization of a CD “A-Cappella Made in Italy”.

Some famous Italian songs which will be performed in Hanoi’s concert include: “Quando quando quando” (by Tony Renis), “Un uomo in frack” (by Domenico Modugno) and “Buonasera Signorina” (by Fred Buscaglione).

This is a closed concert on invitation only.

Screening of “It is not a Life that doesn’t Move” in Hanoi and HCMC

Thu 12 Jun 2014, 7 pm

Amphitheater Nguyen Van Dao

Hanoi National University

Fri 13 Jun 2014, 7 pm

Amphitheater 1

HCMC University of Natural Sciences

You are invited to a documentary film on Yersin’s life and career.

In June 1894, exactly 120 years ago, Dr. Alexandre Yersin, the Swiss Doctor who also became French citizen and ultimately lived and died mainly as Vietnamese in his heart, discovered the bacillus causing the plague, humanity’s biggest scourge ever. This discovery was one of the biggest liberations of the human species in history.

Dr.Yersin was a brilliant scientist in his field, but he was much more. He was the untiring discoverer, inventor and creator of things and ideas that did not exist before. He was eminently humanist, by questing to attenuate concretely and practically the suffering in human life. Few individuals have lived such a life of useful creativity put in service of others, by living at the same time such a tremendously satisfying, rewarding and thus happy life.

The Film is a metaphor of a “life well lived”, it is an inspiration for children, youngsters and their parents, to learn that hard work and perseverance bring the sweetest fruits, that no satisfaction is greater than the one of having done a great effort and having – sometimes after some failures – achieved a goal.

To remind us of the scientific and social achievements of Yersin, but even more, to stress the importance of scientific research as prerequisite of any country’s success, the Hanoi National University has been chosen as venue for the world premiere of the movie: “It is not a life that doesn’t move”.

Before the projection of the film, four eminent Vietnamese scientists (Prof. Nguyen Tran Hien, Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Prof. Le Gia Vinh, Vice President of Vietnam Medical Association, Prof. Dao Ngoc Hao, President of the Vietnam Veterinary Association and Prof. Nguyen Lan Dung, President of the Vietnam Biology Society), which are standing out in disciplines – which were also Yersin’s, namely bacteriology, general medicine, veterinary medicine and botanic sciences – will introduce the public into the universe of their scientific fields and their most fascinating and challenging aspects.

Music Night with Numbfoot, Lark Minkous & JRG_one

Sat 14 Jun 2014, 8 pm

ATK

73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

Brooklyn original Brett Zweiman teams up with Hanoi favourites Dave Payne (Ngu Cung, Zamina, Gibbon Suburbia, etc.) and Hà Đình Huy (basically everyone, ever) to bring you Hanoi’s newest musical concontion: Numbfoot!

Numbfoot! is heavy psychedelic blues straight–dare we say it–from the muddy banks of the Tô Lịch river, with a spoonful of southern cải lương and a few drops of hát xẩm sprinkled on top for good measure.

Huy’s restless, driving beats and Brett’s effects-laden, distorted bass riffs form the guts of of the trio. On top of that, Dave Payne, mostly holding down the bass end of things over the past couple of years with Ngu Cung and Zamina, seems very happy to be off the chain and back on his guitar. The word from the test audience is that the whole thing “chugs along like the Trans-Europe Express, always on time”.

As the perfect foil for Numbfoot!’s power-trio excess, Lark Minkous aka Daniel Henneberry and JRG_one aka Jackson Garland are joining forces to start the night with an exploration of the smaller or lowercase noises found in our lives, performed live with both field recordings and synthetically synthesised sounds.

Daniel Henneberry has emerged as a young, bearded and much-beloved elder of Hanoi’s improvised and experimental music scene over the past few years. Jackson Garland, many would agree, plays far fewer shows that he ought. This one should be a cracker!

Madake

81 Xuan Dieu Str, Tay Ho Dist, Hanoi

Boys and girls you are certainly in for a special treat this month!

We are proud to announce our biggest guest to date, veteran DJ and producer ANDRE KRONERT!

In his productions Andre Kronert performs a mesmerizing balancing act between two worlds. On the one side, there is the raw energy and explosive power of his ecstatic,

repetitive rhythms. On the other side his style is characterized by subtle build-ups, filigree sound textures and the warmth of analogue synthesis. For a good reason, since

Andre Kronert has been an avid vinyl lover since he started DJing 15 years ago. During his live performances he exclusively relies on his beloved music machinery which

includes no laptop. However, he does not regard himself to be a moralizer for the analogue movement: In the end, it’s all about fun!

Photography not only as a tool for capturing reality in a sense of archiving but also as an aesthetic means in a sense of the games of lighting, proportion is not far from the

knowledge of Vietnamese audience. Photography, however, as a conceptual intervention of artist into reality and as the amplification for artist’s questions about not only

ethics but also about politics and cultural study, is indeed a realm where is still being unconcealed. “Being unconcealed” here should be understood in a sense that there is

the amount of images produced in this era of technology and internet has reached an unprecedented level, and accordingly the ways of seeing, of making, of producing

the images are also becoming multiply and indefinable. There are numerous amount of contemporary artists who have been using photography, neither as a tool for

recording reality nor as an aesthetic means, but as many various ways, they have been using it as a forum for great discussions about the nature of image considered in a

relationship with human’s experiences. It is those artists who have brought photography into the landscape (or the space) of contemporary art, i.e. a space of questionings,

of shocks, of debates, a space whose essence is always an everlasting anxiety of human beings about their own fate.

In this discussion, by giving a research to some recent distinguished photography works in Vietnam and in the world, curator Nhu Huy will introduce photography as a tool

of contemporary art to the audience. And the two photography artisits, Tran Thanh Tien and Bang Duong will share their experience when joining the workshop with Zhuang

A six -day workshop for actors and directors

In contribution to creating changes and diversifying different film making ap-proaches in Vietnam, BlackBox has collaborated with award winning Australian Film director Robert Marchand to bring about an intensive training workshop in Character-based improvisation.

This intensive workshop is a practical investigation of a unique process. It exam-ines Mike’s – and Robert’s – methods from beginning to end in a dynamic, in-formative and interactive 6-day workshop. It breaks down this process into logical, easily-absorbed steps. Then the actor creates a character during the workshop, building depth and complexity over several days of improvisations and discussions. Finally, the directors film scenes based on the dramatic work created through the workshop.

“Rob’s inventive use of the Mike Leigh process gives actors the opportunity to experience deeply the state of being in character as opposed to acting the char-acter. The actors found the experience incredibly rewarding, for some it changed the way they approached their acting. Rob has an intuitive, supportive and totally non-judgmental way of bringing the best out of any actor and his blend of process and creativity provides not merely an educational experience but a creative journey for the actors which takes them seamlessly to the point of delivering authentic screen performances.” Kim Krejus, 16th Street Acting Studio
