Video Series from 40 years of German Video Art
Thu 28 Jun 2012, 3.30 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Video Art Video cordially invites you to the first screening of video series form 40 years of German Video Art. Video art emerged in the 60s in the U.S. and Germany and has become one of the most influential genres of art of the 20th Century. Technical systems have developed further, changed or even disappeared: the former TV screen has given way to the computer monitor, video cassettes to software programs and hard drives.
The biggest challenge of video art is its own mortality, due to the short life of the electronic media. Thus, the survival of video art is dependent on a never-ending process of adaptation to new technological standards. 40jahrevideokunst.de, an initiative of the Federal Cultural Foundation, has therefore taken on the task of the rescue, care and dissemination of video art. Five important museums in Germany have joined forces to realize this project, under the direction of Karlsruhe ZKM (Center for Art and Media Technology). Here video art works are professionally archived, digitized, and protected from disappearing.
Video pieces:
1. Sun in your head (1963) by Wolf Vostell
2. Land art (1969) by Gerry Schum
3. Life – Death (1969/2004) by Katharina Sieverding
4. Filz TV (1970) by Joseph Beuys
The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.

Francesco Tristano Live at ATK
Tue 26 Jun 2012, 9 pm
ATK, 73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
Young classical music pioneer, Francesco Tristano will be playing at ATK on Tuesday 26 June. A young musician and composer causing a stir, not only on the club scene, but also in classical concert venues is probably a world-first. Purists from both the classical and techno camps both agree: they don’t know quite what to make of this young, Luxembourg-born musician who refuses to stick to the rules.
He caused a stir by playing techno using sheet music, then riled up the Classical world by mixing his own composition – just like a DJ – into a piece by Frescobaldi.
29-year-old Francesco may well be the only musician in the world combining these two seemingly irreconcilable genres – Classical and Techno. His collaborations with Carl Craig have thrown up four to the floor dance tracks that appeal to both the brain and the feet with more than a passing resemblance to Four Tet’s recent work on Ringer and There is Love in You.
Unquestionably, Francesco Tristano throws up something different, which is why CAMA thinks you’re going to like him.

Performance of Simon Whetham
Wed 27 Jun 2012, 8 pm
La Fenetre Soleil
44 Ly Tu Trong, Dist. 1, HCMC
The Onion Cellar proudly presents a special live concert by SIMON WHETHAM in Ho Chi Minh City.
Simon Whetham is a British musician / sound artist who has been experimenting with environmental sounds since a research trip to Iceland in 2005.
His concerts are often based on an extensive use of field recordings captured by himself from various locations worldwide (to name but a few: the Amazon Forest, the Alps, a library in London’s Peckham, a decommissioned power station in Latvia, etcetera), but heavily processed and carefully assembled to create actual musical compositions, forming new sequences and frequencies that may or may not be there in the first place, resulting in what might be termed as soundtracks to imaginary films.
To date, Simon has released at least 20 albums though numerous independent labels, run various sound installations and workshops, performed at a large number of festivals and venues (including the famous Café Oto in London – haven for all things experimental). He has also shared the stage with luminaries of the scene, such as Colin Potter (of Nurse With Wound fame), Philip Jeck, Tim Hecker, Mark Fell, Scanner (who incidentally was the first electronic musician to play at the Hanoi Opera House back in 2003) etc.
In 2012 Simon has been travelling around the world, playing concerts and collaborating with local musicians at places he goes to. After a series of concerts in Australia (including a support set to “Godfather of Japanese Noise” Merzbow) and Hanoi at CAMA ATK, Simon will perform another concert at La Fenetre Soleil coupled with young noise talent Hong Giang (Writher). Minimalist performances like this aren’t for everyone – there definitely won’t be any dancing – but for those with open ears and minds, this isn’t one to miss.

Exhibition “A Transformative Disguise”
Opening: Wed 27 Jun, 6 pm
Exhibition: 28 Jun – 27 Jul 2012, 9 am – 6 pm
Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam
27 Quang Trung, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
The Japan Foundation Center for cultural exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with San Art as a co-organizer, proudly hosts an art exhibition by Le Hoang Bich Phuong “A Transformative Disguise” in Hanoi.
Le Hoang Bich Phuong is a Ho Chi Minh City based young artist who was awarded an artist-in-residence at S-AIR inSapporo City, Japan, through the JENESYS Invitation Program for Creators operated by the Japan Foundation.
Crows are considered unlucky in Vietnam so when Le Hoang Bich Phuong found herself in Sapporo, Japan lost in her attempt to find an art supply store, she was hesitant to approach the only shop on the street that was surrounded by a flock of these black, loud birds. A Japanese man stepped forward to help her find her destination by a hand drawn game of Pictionary. From that day forward, crows have ceased to be unlucky for Bich Phuong. Such personal encounters are frequently referenced in the work of this emerging artist whose recall of human character is cunningly, at times comically analogous to the myths of the animal world.
In this exhibition a series of portraits in silk, representing herself, including various strangers and friends both real and imagined, wear the facial mask of particular animals — donkeys with buckteeth possess skeletal hands; an old bear towers like an oversized hooded jacket over a young child’s face; a pig sits sickly with a dripping and swelling red nose; or a Japanese operatic mask of a fox stands pulling at his lips as if he cannot speak. Deftly painted in subtle tones of watercolor, what these images refer are the indulgent and insecure habits of the human condition.
Fascinated with the way established and vernacular mythological narrative can offer moral or ethical lessons, Bich Phuong playfully alludes to a myriad of cultural tradition from Japanese and Vietnamese fairytale to insightful re-readings of Aesop and children’s nursery rhymes. In the world of Bich Phuong, the donning of invisible masks is a frequent practice in contemporary life where either by means of survival or psychological insecurity, these masks appears to offer some kind of protection. Accompanying these paintings is a series of miniature ceramic sculptures whose human bodies have bonded with their masks; some have limbs that are missing, while another has a fish tank for a brain. What Bich Phuong questions in ‘A Transformative Disguise’ is whether these masks once worn, can ever truly be removed.
This exhibition will transform the exhibition space of the Japan Foundation, playing with ideas of reflection and transparency, encouraging the audience to question what kind of masks they may be wearing in their own every day.
Le Hoang Bich Phuong (b. 1984,Ho Chi Minh City) is one ofVietnam’s most promising young artists whose study of Vietnamese and Japanese silk painting traditions has greatly influenced her own unique style and technique. Influenced by the ukiyo-e tradition, while also drawn to the popular world of the comic, Bich Phuong’s strong command of line and color creates an ethereal, near surreal presence. A graduate of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University, she was awarded an artist-in-residence in Sapporo, Japan, as part of the ‘JENESYS Program: Invitation Program for Creators’ of the Japan Foundation in 2011 and that same year was also one of the finalists for the DOGMA Art Prize in self-portraiture. In 2010 she was finalist in the ‘Talent Prize’ of the Cultural Development and Exchange Fund.

Art in Discussion – Matter Becomes Form
Goethe Institut Vietnam

Goethe Institut HCMC

Hertha Miessner, Susanne Wackerbauer andTraude Linhardt live and work in Munich, Germany. Each of them having her own way of life and her own style and art production frequently come together for joint projects and exhibitions. They share the artistic engagement to transform visual objects into abstract, serial and highly artificial compositions.
Hertha Miessner is using elements of traditional art-techniques only in order to put them into new contextualizations and combine them with modern technologies. Thus she is reinterpreting elements of western history of art, confronting the traditional with the most advanced technical developments.
Susanne Wackerbauers series and collections always have as their core items architectural and sculptural elements. She strives to give a halt to the time fluidum by showing the continuous change and continuous movements in the process of life. Save and collect is over and over again the main focus in the artist’s work.
Traude Linhardt is a sculptor and uses as a basis torso-shaped structures made from iron strings, which are covered with different materials. Her materials like beewax, jute or asian papers, thus reflecting archaic models, are being confronted with modern recycling materials like plastic, film or audiotapes. This juxtaposition marks the shape of each torso in its different sizes.

Screening of “American Movie”
Fri 22 Jun 2012, 6 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
You are invited to the screening of “American Movie” by American filmmaker, Chris Smith. You’re behind on your child support, your phone’s being turned off, and you owe money to the IRS — what do you do? Make a movie! At least that’s what beleaguered Wisconsin filmmaker Mark Borchardt decided to do in the Sundance smash American Movie.
Documentary director Chris Smith and producer Sarah Price followed Borchardt for two years as he struggled to complete a 35-minute direct-market thriller filmcalled Coven, with $3,000 borrowed from his semi-senile uncle and the loyal support of his unflappably affable guitar-playing best friend, Mike Schank.
The result is a poignant and often hilarious character study of a charismatic all-American underdog, who makes up in drive and vision what he lacks in talent. Interviews with Borchardt’s skeptical family and friends are combined with scenes of sparsely attended production meetings, no-budget film shoots, and camp-outs in the editing room with the kids.
Guaranteed to touch a nerve in anyone who has ever aspired to make films, American Movie is an offbeat, sometimes sad, but ultimately inspirational tribute to pursuing one’s dreams.
Languages: The film is in English with Vietnamese subtitle.
Free entrance. The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.

Exhibition “Dust”
Opening: Fri 22 Jun, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: 22 Jun – 05 Jul 2012
Galerie Quynh
65 Đề Thám, District 1, HCMC
Galerie Quynh is pleased to present Dust, Nguyen Phuong Linh’s second solo exhibition in the gallery’s Emerging Artist Program. Initiated in 2009 to encourage young Vietnamese artists making experimental work, the program not only provides the artists with a platform to show their work, but also supports education and discourse through talks and publications. Salt (2009) was Phuong Linh’s first solo exhibition in the Emerging Artist Program.
In her latest body of work, Phuong Linh examines the traces of personal and collective memories and histories. Tied to the history of a given object or place, dust often collects on forgotten and disused objects; the accumulation of dust is a natural index of the passage of time. Phuong’s Linh’s minimalistic, yet sensuous artworks allude to the past, blurring deeply personal memories and national histories.
Dust comprises three recent works by the artist. The Dust Project, originally shown at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum during the artist’s residency in 2011, includes an array of small vials containing dust collected from various objects and different sites in Vietnam, Japan and Korea: a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, a relative’s altar, bridges crossed in three nations, cracks in destroyed homes caused by natural disasters, grave sites of soldiers, churches and numerous other sites that have been ruined or forgotten. Images of these sites documented through beautiful, muted blueprints – a printing method that is becoming obsolete with new technologies – accompany the delicate vials of dust. Like the dust Xu Bing collected from New York’s streets following 9/11, the dust in Phuong Linh’s vials are specific to the sites where it was gathered; each vial contains dust of varying hues. Through the simple act of collecting dust, Phuong Linh reflects on the importance of revisiting history, retelling stories and renewing hope when all appears lost.
Whitescape appears like pristine white dust. Comprising two tons of white limestone powder, the work appears like a stark, ethereal landscape. Limestone, formed by the skeletons of billions of marine animals over millions of years, is mined throughout the world for construction and agricultural purposes. The limestone powder brings to mind mortality, destruction, renewal and change. The small peaks in the landscape will slowly morph and erode throughout the course of the exhibition.
Steeped in the artist’s personal memories of Hanoi, Rubber, Soap, Tobacco consists of three compressed cubes of each of these common products widely consumed by both the Vietnamese working- and middle-classes. Inspired by Yellow Star Rubber Factory, Hanoi Soap Factory and Thang Long Tobacco Factory, three prominent companies established in the 50s and 60s in Hanoi that proudly marked Vietnam’s ability to produce light industrial products for the first time, the dense cubes sit on iron stands, strong and stoic, like totems of economic power.
About Artist: Born in 1985 in Hanoi where she is also based, Nguyen Phuong Linh is one of Vietnam’s most promising young artists. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions with recent solo shows at 3147966 cm3 mobile gallery in Thailand, Nha San Studio in Vietnam and Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan. Phuong Linh has also held many international artist residencies with organizations such as Seoul Art Space, Korea, Kaman Art Foundation, Rajasthan, India and The Luggage Store, San Francisco, California, USA.
Dust is generously supported by the Danish Embassy in Hanoi’s Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF).

Coleman says she is excited about bringing Australian contemporary dancers to Hanoi, where there is a long history and appreciation of dance. Coleman and five dancers will also host a dance workshop for members of the Vietnam Youth Theatre where the artists can share and learn from each other.
“We are looking forward to experiencing the passion the Vietnamese have for their own dance and cultural heritage – and sharing our own,” Coleman says.
Remnant Dance is visiting Hanoi in preparation for their 2014 Asia Tour. For more information about their Hanoi schedule, collaborative video project, and their work with My Kids, an Australian charity for children in Myanmar, please visit www.remnantdance.com.au

Interaction Video Art “Dharma – Realm”
Opening: Tue 22 May, 7 pm
Exhibition: 23 – 25 May 2012
Studio 3
½ Lane 99 Duc Giang st., Long Bien, Ha Noi
“Dharma-Realm” – an exhibition opening the curtain to the mystery of Buddhism.
Buddhism is a religion to which the artist, Pham Quang Hieu is extremely grateful, and through his Installation and Interaction Video Art Exhibition “Dharma-Realm”, 23 – 25 May 2012, he seeks to present an explanation to the mysterious, multi-interpretive Buddhist concept “Dharma-Realm”.
In Buddhism, the concept of Dharma-Realm has two basic interpretations: Dharma-Realm is the perfect representation of the true nature of things and phenomena; or Dharma-Realm is the region, mind and circumstance in which a being exists. But what is the true nature of an existence, when human beings have so many different perspectives and feelings?
Through the exhibition “Dharma-Realm” Pham Quang Hieu wishes to present an image, which conveys both the extreme simplicity and the infinite complexity, to partly explain this Buddhist concept. His aim is to pierce a small hole in the curtain of mystery – the “inconceivable” – surrounding Buddhism.
In the Video Art Exhibition four different installation and interaction videos will be presented: Dharma-Realm, Buddhas, the Glass of Beer and Reflection. These videos view the world as a net knitted by countless things and each existence as an individual and as a whole, and hence contribute to the explanation of the true nature of an existence.

Exhibition of Gustav Klimt
Opening: Fri 15 Jun, 5 pm
Exhibition: 15 – 24 Jun 2012
National Library
31 Tràng Thi, Hanoi
“The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) can be seen all over Hanoi on canvases, lacquer plates and boxes, coffee mugs….. Klimt embodies the beauty, seductiveness and boldness of “Art Nouveau”, the revolutionary art movement around 1900 in Europe like few other artists.
He lived in a time and a place of cultural path-breaking, together with fellow Viennese like Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, or Arnold Schönberg.
Painter of many “icons” – “The Kiss” is by no means the only iconic painting by Klimt. His many female portraits (depicting numerous ladies of the then Austrian high society), and female allegories form a narrative of the Vienna art nouveau era. These works depict a unique eroticism and psychological depth. His landscape paintings are of breathtaking beauty as well.
With an exhibition held on the occasion of Klimt’s 150th birthday and the 40th anniversary of Austria-Vietnam relations, the National Library of Vietnam and the Austrian Embassy want to present this Austrian, Viennese artist and his times to the public in Hanoi.
Noi Hanoi with the Theme of “Shades”
Sun 17 Jun 2012, 8 pm
Tadioto
12 Truong Han Sieu, Hanoi
Even in the hottest summer sun, Hanoi is a city of shades. In the shadows of its narrow streets or under its leafing flame trees, dark corners persist. Nothing is certain, moments are ambiguous, and everything takes on shades of gray. On Sunday, June 17, the monthly spoken word series Noi Hanoi brings together Vietnamese and foreign writers to explore this theme of “shades” and its various implications: bóng đen (black shadow), bóng dáng (appearance), and sắc thái (nuance). Please join us for an evening of poetry, stories, multimedia and spoken word. The night will also include an open mic and audience participation.
Admission is free.
