About film

When Harry Met Sally

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY… is a 1989 American romantic comedy film written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner. It stars Billy Crystal as Harry and Meg Ryan as Sally. The story follows the title characters from the time they meet just before sharing a cross-country drive, through twelve years or so of chance encounters in New York City. The film raises the question “Can men and women ever just be friends?” and advances many ideas about relationships that became household concepts, such as those of the “high-maintenance” girlfriend and the “transitional person”.

Ephron received a British Academy Film Award, an Oscar nomination, and a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for her screenplay. The film is ranked 23rd on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Laughs list of the top comedy films in American cinema and number 60 on Bravo’s “100 Funniest Movies”. In early 2004, the film was adapted for the stage in a production starring Luke Perry and Alyson Hannigan.

Out of Africa

OUT OF AFRICA is a 1985 American romantic drama film directed and produced by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. It’s a story in 20th century colonial Kenya, a Danish baroness/plantation owner has a passionate love affair with a free-sprited big-game hunter.

The film is based loosely on the autobiographical book OUT OF AFRICA written by Isak Dinesen (the pseudonym of Danish author Karen Blixen), which was published in 1937, with additional material from Dinesen’s book Shadows on the Grass and other sources. This film received 28 film awards, including seven Academy Awards.

The book was adapted into a screenplay by the writer Kurt Luedtke, and directed by the American Sydney Pollack. Streep played Karen Blixen; Redford played Denys Finch Hatton; and Klaus Maria Brandauer played Baron Bror Blixen. Photo Exhibition “Portraits of Compassion: A Journey from War to Peace”

Thu 13 Mar 2014, 6.45 – 8.15 pm

Lane 12, 54A Dang Thai Mai (across from Hoang An Temple)

Photojournalist Paul Davis will arrive in Hanoi from the United States to share his award-winning photography for a one-evening photo exhibition.

Paul’s photographic journey began in 1965 when he purchased his first 35 mm camera at age 19 while serving in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine as a radio operator. During his deployment, Paul stepped on a landmine that nearly took his life. Upon returning to Vietnam in 2003, Paul reconnected with his love for photography. Seeing and hearing Paul’s journey that brought him from rural America all the way to Hanoi is a compelling story of irony, intrigue and illumination. In addition to photography, Paul is ordained as a Buddhist practitioner and a licensed social worker. His photographs appear regularly in several publications.

You are invited to the film screening of “TONY TAKITANI”.

TONY TAKITANI (2004)

Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami

“Born just after World War II, and a few days before his mother’s death, Tony Takitani was named after his father’s American friend…

Tony’s father was a touring jazz musician, which meant that Tony spent a lot of his childhood alone. Tony became skilled at drawing, and while his works were technically precise, they lacked heart.

He became a technical illustrator, but even in his adulthood, his loneliness persisted. That was until he fell in love with a co-worker”

“Jun Ichikawa’s film version of one of Haruki Murakami’s most elegant short stories somehow manages to redefine the whole process of literary adaptation, though with the same quiet, unassuming grace of the original story.

Ichikawa visualises this character study of loneliness as a series of vignettes, ending each scene with a lateral wipe from right to left.. like the turning of a page.”

“In this melancholy tale of a solitary man, Ichikawa adds a grace note of optimism without compromising the sting of loss at the core of the story.”

Tiny Flower’s Shop and Cafe – A New Film from MCNV and INFI to Celebrate International Women’s Day

To celebrate International Women’s Day MCNV and INFI are launching a new film made in Quang Tri about a young woman named Hoa. She runs her own shop and cafe business in a small village close to Dong Ha City. With the help of a micro-loan funded by MCNV she made her small business more viable and is now considering the next steps to expand her enterprise.

The film follows Hoa as she meets the local loan collector, serves her regular customers, negotiates with suppliers and enjoys jokes with some boisterous students coming home after school. At the heart of the story is Hoa and her determination to improve her life for herself and her family by applying good business sense to her loan.

It shows how micro-loans in the hands of people with ambition can have an exponential effect beyond the finance itself. In Hoa’s case she has been empowered to move from loan receiver to loan giver using a social media group to connect with people less fortunate than herself that gives specifically targeted micro-loans of up to $100 each all organised via Facebook.

You can see the film here.

or in high definition version here

Tiny Flower’s Shop and Cafe was made by Hanoi-based filmmaker Paul Zetter.

Please feel free to invite all of the women, and people who love them, that you know.

ONE BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE is a global call to women survivors of violence and those who love them to gather safely in community outside places where they are entitled to justice – courthouses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes, or simply public gathering places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not. It is a call to survivors to break the silence and release their stories – politically, spiritually, outrageously – through art, dance, marches, ritual, song, spoken word, testimonies and whatever way feels right.

Exhibition “A Woman’s View”

Opening: Fri 07 Mar, 6 pm

Exhibition: 07 – 23 Mar 2014, 9 am – 7 pm

Woman’s Cinema – Film evening of the women: Sun 23 Mar, 6.30 pm

Women have been always active as artists but until nowadays they are less represented and have less visibility in the still male-dominated art world – on international level and also in Vietnam. Therefore the Goethe-Institut invited eight women-artists who are already well-known in the contemporary art scene to realize a project of their choice in the framework of an exhibition with the title “A Woman’s View”.

On March 7, the eve before International Womens‘ Day 2014 this exhibition will be opened at the Goethe-Institut: An impressive range of strong, original works.

The curator of this show, Suzanne Lecht, who as Art Director of Art Vietnam Gallery has decisively contributed to the development of contemporary art in Vietnam throughout more than 20 years and always had a special eye for female talents, emphasizes: “A Woman’s View” is meant to carve out space to celebrate and to examine the essence of the female spirit and the ways in which this spirit transmutes into art. This exhibition intends to honor women for who they are, what they do and how they view the world.“ Many of the artworks in this show are memory based – inspired by historical traditions, crafts and rituals and intimate familial musings.

The catalogue of the exhibition includes an essay by Natalja Kraevskaja about “A Shifting Platform with Traditional Accessoires – Views and Practice of Contemporary Women-Artists in Vietnam”. The art scholar, curator and founder of the legendary “Salon Natasha”, the first independent art space in Vietnam, highlights the specific features of each of the eight artists. In spite of the wide specter of attitudes, themes and aestetics, Natalja Kraevskaja finds a joint “femine touch”: The art works „are far from the masculine ideal of conquest, possession and power and are more about positioning self, transition of memories, repercussion and search of essence.“ A woman’s view, it seems, goes through the surface towards the deeper layers of reality.

The exhibition “A Woman’s View” presents the following artists and their works:

• Hanoi DocLab: Let Us Now Praise Famous Women. Single-channel video projection, ed. Nguyen Trinh Thi, 2013

• Nguyen Thi Chau Giang: Inside Us. Double side silk painting, 2014

• Nguyen Huu Tram Kha: The Metaphor. Installation with X-ray film plates, 2014.

• Nguyen Thi Chinh Le: The Guests. 12 bronze sculptures, 2014.

• Maritta Nurmi: keep your dreams like china in your hands. Ceramic Vase, 2014

• Oanh Phi Phi: Armor. Lacquer sculptural painting, 2014

• Dinh Thi Tham Poong: Side by Side. Triptique, lacquer painting, 2014.

• Vu Kim Thu: Floating Landscape. Sculpture / lamp, transparent plastic and Mino Washi paper, 2014

Nguyen Trinh Thi - Landscape still double

All artists will attend the opening and present their art works, introduced by Suzanne Lecht.

As a closing event of the exhibition, there will be a Women’s Cinema night on 23rd March with short films by film makers of Hanoi DocLab, moderated by Nguyen Trinh Thi.

Dinh Thi Tham Poong, known for her highly patterned works on handmade Do paper turns her hand to a traditional Vietnamese medium and presents a lacquer triptych that examines intimacy and how our personal relationships provide a mirror into some of the deepest aspects of our own psyche. The artist explores the dialogue that is always unfolding between loved ones By painting in a way that highlights the overlap between her figures – a visual metaphor well-suited to the lacquer’s overlay technique – the work, Side by Side asks whether the question “where do you end and where do I begin is valid?”

Phi Phi Oanh, a Vietnamese artist born in America, also uses the lacquer medium but unlike the intimacy of Tham Poong’s work, Phi Phi uses her outsider perspective to give us a detached view of identity. The Armor, a lacquer torso combined with a mask and pith helmet, gives physical form to the armor we all wear in order to keep our singular identities intact in a world of often conflicting and contradictory ideologies. Phi Phi has recently received international acclaim and her monumental lacquer work Specula was presented in the 2013 Singapore Biennale.

Another outsider’s view is presented by Maritta Nurmi, an artist from Finland, residing in Vietnam for over 20 years. Perhaps the most decidedly feminine, a life size vessel, a classic female form, depicts on its surface a map of the artists interior life, recording her triumphs and sorrows. The works title, keep your dreams like china in your hands, suggests that just as her clay vessel, the artist has emerged from a trial by fire, strong and fragile, sad and joyous with all her aspirations intact.

Nguyen Thi Chau Giang, in her signature works on silk, continues her exploration of how to maintain a balance between her public and private lives. Inside of us is an innovative work painted on two sides, which by using the image of a woman and a dragon, each one dominant on opposite sides, accentuates that eternal struggle of how to maintain a balance between the two poles of masculine feminine.

Quietly emerging on the art scene. Nguyen Huu Tram Kha’s installation, “The Metaphor” is both haunting and transformative. It consists of hundreds of x-ray film strips woven together to create what appears like a blanket of memory. The feminine construct of story telling is subtle and only hauntingly exposed, for while it seems that so much is being revealed through the x-ray images, so much remains eerily absent.

The installation of bronze sculptures by Zen Buddhist sculptor/painter/poet Nguyen Thi Chinh Le reflects the poetry she finds in the empty spaces in one’s life. Her work of 12 bronze sculptures, The Guests, sitting at a table for a seemingly imaginary meal, recalls the enigma of the stories she overheard as a girl, the stories she now continues to tell. The sculptures, both delicate and sturdy, are infused with the artist’s nascent wisdom. She reminds viewers to see the empty void in front of the assembled guests – here sits our reminiscences of time past as well as the anticipation of what is to come.

Interestingly, of all the artists profiled here, Vu Kim Thu’s Lines and Light work presents the most removed perspective. Inspired by a residency in Udatsu, Japan, Thu maps a landscape of the village’s historical roofs and houses onto a lantern made of Japanese Washi paper. Known for her intricate, delicate drawings, Thu succeeds in mapping a birds eye view of a culture not her own but one that could be. Reminiscent of the roofs of her ancient Hanoi, the artist transcends cultural borders and creates a universal work of art. As the film maker Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”

Nguyen Trinh Thi, founder and director of Doclab, an independent center for documentary film and video art at the Goethe Institut in Hanoi, presents a collaborative work made during Doclab workshop, Let Us Now Praise Famous Women, which explores various aspects of labor in Vietnam. The film is not meant to create an archetype of the contemporary working woman. Quite the contrary, it takes the time to celebrate the individuality of each of its subjects. Let Us Now Praise Famous Women reminds viewers of their own basic humanity in the face of an ever-more industrialized society. Video work is gaining ground in Vietnam and Trinh Thi is receiving international acclaim for her work. Thi’s recent work, “Unsubtitled”, a video work of life sized images projected on wooden cut-outs that uses the metaphor of eating to question freedom of expression, was presented in the Singapore Biennale 2013.

Cambodia – Open Studio with artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai

Friday, 28 February 2014, 6-8pm

Sa Sa Art Projects, the White Building, Sothearos Blvd

As part of Pisaot residency with Sa Sa Art Projects, Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has done research at a Vietnamese fishing village near Tonle Sap lake in Siem Reap province. Exploring notions of identity and territory, Mai investigated different cultural, social and political issues confronted by this 400-household community, some of whom have been living there for the last two or three generations. She looked closely at the meaning and the agency of an ID card, and its impact on knowledge and lives of this community. According to Mai, “an ID card is like the key for change in the life of some people: it could be identity, it could be power, it might be a matter of classification, it could be their dream…” Mai’s project during Pisaot residency marked an expansion of the artist’s practice from studio-based to community-oriented, and from topics that usually concern with women to notions of identity and displacement.

About Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai

Employing various media, Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai’s (b. Hanoi, Vietnam, 1983) practice has been largely centering on issues of female body, sex, and constructed social values that affect women. Mai’s works usually challenge and open up these issues, confronting power relations, fears and desires through experimentations with materiality and evocation of bodily transgression. Mai’s most recent solo exhibitions includeThe Scar, Craig Thomas Gallery, Ho Chi Minh City (2012). Group exhibitions include XEM, Sàn Art, Ho Chi Minh City (2013), Riverscapes IN FLUX, Hanoi, Saigon, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Jakarta, Manila (2012) and Time and The Return, New Space Art Foundation Gallery, Hue (2011). Mai has undertaken residency at HIVE Studio, Cheongju city, South Korea (2013), New Space Arts Foundation, Hue city, Vietnam (2013) and Sàn Art Laboratory, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (2012). Mai lives and works in Hue, Vietnam. More about Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai at nguyenthithanhmai.tumblr.com

About Pisaot

Pisaot is an experimental art residency program for Cambodian artists, as well as selected international guests, to undertake a period of usually six weeks living and working in the Sa Sa Art Projects space, in the White Building of central Phnom Penh. During each residency, artists are encouraged to experiment in their practice. Pisaot does not ask artists to make work for an exhibition. In fact, the program gives selected artists freedom to do anything they want. Artists-in-residence will be encouraged to try new ways to use different media and/or to explore new ideas that expand the artists’ current practices and challenge the possibility of art.

Screening of “Street Vendors”

Thu 13 Mar 2014, 7.30 pm

Hanoi Cinematheque

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Friends of Vietnam Heritage (FVH) would like to present to its members the screening of “Street Vendors” – produced by Rolf Jensen with support from the Vietnamese Woman’s Museum in Hanoi

The three films of “ Streets Vendors “ features the voices and stories of a group of rural women in Vietnam, who leave their children and husbands at home and go to Hanoi to work as street vendors.

The first film: “Their voices” features nine women speaking to two different audiences. Their first message is to the foreign audience that understands little about who they are, where they come from and why they do the job they do. Their second message is to the Vietnamese audience that largely sees the street vendors as a nuisance, who they feel come to the city only when they have nothing better to do at home.

The two remaining films focus on two very touching stories of two street vendor women – Ms. Thuy and Ms. Loi.

Thuy’s story tells us of her difficulties she faces while working in a city that is largely hostile to the presence women like her, the pressure from the police and customers who mistrust and look down on her.

Loi’s story is about a 56 years old woman whose husband died years ago and she has been struggling to get out of poverty her entire life. Living in bad conditions in Hanoi to save money she stills worry about her married daughter and family.

Vietnamese with English subtitles and run time is 56 minutes.

Only a few novels achieve the status of myth, DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE is one of those rare books. Why should a rather short book, without a hint of romance, little violence and even less suspense (since surely every reader knows or guesses the identity of Hyde well before it is revealed), be so very popular? The answer must lie in its dissection of evil. Stevenson starts with a clean slate, he begins with no moral assumptions and takes his audience in a roller coaster ride through Victorian London.

DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE is a thriller, a horror story and at times a grotesque comedy. We have tried to mirror this in our staging and hope we have done justice to a tale of injustice, violence and pure evil that is surprisingly moral. What strikes the reader and we hope audience member is the unflinching honesty of this window into the human heart.

Dr Jekyll is a scientist who’s subject of experimentation is his own inner being. He begins by trying to separate the evil and good inside himself by the use of chemicals but ends up creating a monster of his inner demons and leaving his original self riddled by guilt and the terrible desire to be the vile Mr Hyde. His old friend Utterson gradually discovers the shocking truth and barely escapes with his life or reason.

The production is brought to the stage by the same artistic team who created GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, FRANKENSTEIN and BRAVE NEW WORLD. The director Paul Stebbings has also directed such recent TNT/ADGE productions as KING LEAR, MACBETH and ROMEO & JULIET. The company’s style combines dynamic physical theatre with specially composed music, songs and striking visual imagery, adding a dash of audience participation to create a truly theatrical event.

The production tours over twenty countries worldwide from Britain to Vietnam and Norway to Malaysia in the autumn and winter 2013/14.

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

The Hanoi Opera Guild will screen a relatively new version of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) by the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The Magic Flute was Mozart’s final opera and premiered six weeks before Mozart’s death. Although it is currently in the opera repertoire and is considered Mozart’s most popular opera, it was originally written as a singspiele in the German language, somewhat different from the Italian language operas that Mozart usually composed.

One of the most popular arias from the opera is the introduction of Papageno as the bird-catcher:

About film

Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest ’70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late ’60s by two celebrated producers struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an album which they believed would secure his reputation as the greatest recording artist of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.

Exhibition “Above Under Sky”

Opening: Sun 02 Mar, 6.30 pm

Exhibition: 02 – 15 Mar 2014

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Manzi art space and Hanoi Grapevine are proud to present a special duo show entitled ‘Above Under Sky’ by visual artists Lê Giang and Lê Hoàng Bích Phượng.

Including a series of simple but intriguing installations and drawings, ‘Above Under Sky’ will transform the space of manzi, urging the audience to find out the real layers hidden behind every single artworks.

Slightly different from her previous artworks which were deftly painted in subtle watercolours tones, this time, Lê Hoàng Bích Phượng brings us her latest creations in human shapes – all are vague, colourless but reflecting the insentience of mankind.

“People are born with different characteristics, appearances and different thinkings. That makes a diverse world with different social classes and distinctive individuals. Everybody has the right to equality and freedom. We have the right to voice our opinions, thoughts that (we think) are appropriate and have positive effects on the community. Some people are afraid to speak their minds, to keep their originality as they don’t want to be different and be isolated. Because of that, they start to lose their own voices, figures, characteristics and become invisible.

Is there any difference at all when everything turns vague, transparent, colourless?”

In connection to Phuong’s, Lê Giang’s artwork is also an exploration into the multi-layers of personal conflicts, to find out the answer for her question “What is a perfect world?”

“Unreasonable holes on the ground, holes in rooms or in unfamiliar spaces; and seals these holes with Perspex. Perspex in a way allows people to look through it to see the feather inside, but also, at some level prevent us with its reflection. As being prevented at the first sight to see what inside the hole, people come closer and try to look inside desperately. The effect of seeing ourselves in the hole poses the question: which side of it are we in? Are we inside the hole or outside? We try to find something but we find ourselves.“

Using the hole as symbol of an entrance to another world, Giang has tried to create an imaginary realm within the everyday, to make possible the utopian.

The event is brought to you by the Prince Claus Fund for Culture & Development & the Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF) of the Danish Embassy.

About films

AMERICAN BEAUTY is a 1999 American drama film directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball. Kevin Spacey stars as office worker Lester Burnham, who has a midlife crisis when he becomes infatuated with his teenage daughter’s best friend, Angela (Mena Suvari). Annette Bening co-stars as Lester’s materialistic wife, Carolyn, and Thora Birch plays their insecure daughter, Jane; Wes Bentley, Chris Cooper, and Allison Janney also feature.

The film has been described by academics as a satire of American middle class notions of beauty and personal satisfaction; analysis has focused on the film’s explorations of romantic and paternal love, sexuality, beauty, materialism, self-liberation, and redemption.

At the 72nd Academy Awards the following year, the film won Best Picture for Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks, Best Director for Sam Mendes, Best Actor for Kevin Spacey, Best Original Screenplay for Alan Ball, and Best Cinematography for Conrad L. Hall.

DEPARTURES (おくりびと Okuribito?) is a 2008 Japanese drama film by Yōjirō Takita. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 81st Oscars in 2009 and the Japan Academy Prize for Picture of the Year at the 32nd Japan Academy Prize.

The films concerns the historic Japanese “encoffining” ceremony (called a nōkan) in which professional morticians (納棺者 nōkansha?) ritually dress and prepare bodies before they are placed in coffins. Although the film follows contemporary themes, the practice is now rarely performed; limited mainly to rural areas where older traditions are maintained.

The screening is for educational purpose, entrance is free, though guests are welcome to donate to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.
