Films Screening “10 things I hate about You” and “Romeo + Juliet”

Screening of “Romeo + Juliet”: Fri 27 Mar 2015, 7.30 pm

Screening of “10 things I hate about You”: Sat 28 Mar 2015, 2 pm

Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents

51 Tran Hung Dao Str (4th floor), Hanoi

In the last week of March, you are invited to the screening of 2 films adapted from or based on the plays of William Shakespeare: “10 things I hate about You” (1999) and “Romeo + Juliet” (1996).

About the film

ROMEO + JULIET is a 1996 American romantic drama film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the leading roles. The film is an abridged modernization of Shakespeare’s play. While it retains the original Shakespearean dialogue, the Montagues and the Capulets are represented as warring mafia empires (with legitimate business fronts) and swords are replaced with guns (with brand names such as “Dagger” and “Sword”).

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU is a 1999 American teen romantic comedy-drama film. It is directed by Gil Junger and stars Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The film, a modernization of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, is titled after a poem written by the film’s female lead (played by Stiles) to describe her bittersweet romance with the male lead (played by Ledger). The film was released March 31, 1999, and it was a breakout success for stars Stiles, Ledger and Gordon-Levitt.

Exhibition “The World in my Mind” by Hoang Trung

Exhibition: Thu 26 Mar 2015, 6 – 9 pm

DeciBel Lounge

79/2/5 Phan Ke Binh, D1, HCMC

You are invited to exhibition “The World in my Mind” by Hoang Trung.

“The World in my Mind” is the name of this collection, which shows the ways the world works in my mind right here right now.

The things that dominate my mind are usually my family and my friends, who play important parts in my life. This project express what I see and how I feel towards these people, and through this project, I also want to build some memory with them.

The style of this project is quite hard to describe. Once I accidentally used my girlfriend’s favourite colors to mix with my favourite realistic style and dark colors. The result comes up pretty weird to me then, … and I am kinda like it. So, here it is, the style that you are looking at. Thanks for spending time listening to my noise. Let’s take a look and share what do you all think.

Free entry.

Recently Hoang Trung also took part in the multi-media project “Standpoint Theories” with Le Cat Trong Ly and Emily Navarra.

Exhibition “Smile! Temporary Art” with Plonk & Replonk at Manzi

Opening: Fri 26 Mar 2015, 6.30 pm

Showcase: 26 Mar – 26 Apr 2015

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Manzi and L’Espace are proud to present the weird and wonderful world of Plonk & Replonk with the exhibition entitled “Smile! Temporary Art” (opening 26th March at Manzi).

Well-known in both their place of birth Switzerland and neighboring country France as Plonk & Replonk, the artist duo/brothers Hubert Froidevaux (b. 1966) and Jacques Froidevaux (b. 1963) explore the endless possible uses of humour in various art forms: object, sculpture, installation, light box, postcard, graphic print etc. Characterized by a mix of black humour and wicked wit, which borders on the sarcastic and mischievous, Plonk & Replonk deal with worldwide relevant topics such as environment, globalization, education and consumerism with both criticality and lightheartedness, making their work brutally honest yet playful and fantastical.

By turning ordinary objects, habits and events upside-down and inside-out, Plonk & Replonk ask us to see reality in other ways. Or rather, they invite us in for a not-your-usual exhibition, a never-ending laughter work-out, and a hard-to-find chance to at least, for once, let ourselves loose and laugh at art.

Free entry.

Exhibition “The 8th Day” at Sofitel Plaza Hanoi

Exhibition: 26 Mar – 25 Apr 2015

Lobby Level

1 Thanh Nien Road, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

On 26th March 2015, Sofitel Plaza Hanoi is delighted to present the exhibition entitled “The 8th Day” featuring paintings by a group of female artists from Hanoi. The exhibition will be open until 25th April 2015.

Date and time mark important milestones in everyone’s life. Every week has only seven days, but to our artists, there is the 8th day beyond common knowledge and perception. It is where and when they bask into their own imaginary worlds, fuel their dreams and get inspired for their creativity.

The exhibition will showcase paintings by talented artists Duong Thuy Duong, Dang Tu Thu and Nguyen Thi Minh Tam. Harmoniously blending Vietnamese touch and French elegance in its contemporary design and most refined ambiance inspired by the Indochine past charm, Sofitel Plaza Hanoi will be the perfect settings for this inspiring event.

Duong Thuy Duong believes that there is neither gods nor spirit, but she intends to draw them. Therefore, they appear in Duong’s paintings mostly as symbols. Applying unusual and contemporary technique in her paintings, she surpasses doubts about faith and religion to look down to the world.

Unlike Duong, Dang Tu Thu equivocally believes in God, but sometimes she doubts herself. In her eye, God can watch the living souls that he created but takes no action to show his existence. Thu’s oil paintings are the combination of figurative art and the new surrealism.

Only the third artist, Nguyen Thi Minh Tam, seems to be sunk in her own spiritual world. There are angels, devils and souls that grow on the law of the universe. Her paintings are filled with strong and bright colors but simplified in figure, requiring the audience not only to see, but to really feel the artworks.

“The 8th Day” Painting Exhibition promises the audience an exciting experience in the creativity and inspiration of art.

Music Night with Thisquietarmy + Sound Awakener + Glitter Troff

Thu 26 Mar 2015, 8 pm

ATK

73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

Moon Gramophone & ATK present

A live music-gathering featuring:

THISQUIETARMY

SOUND AWAKENER

GLITTER TROFF

MOON GRAMOPHONE is chuffed to bits to present this evening of out-there music from some wonderful artists – who all happen to share a tie with Vietnam, in one way or another, and – who, more importantly, all truly operate within the eye-shaped intersection of ‘boundary-pushing’ and ‘unpretentiousness’. Wow.

The event sees the first ever Vietnam-appearance (literally) from world-renowned Montreal-based Vietnamese Canadian guitar-artist THISQUIETARMY (Eric Quach). Continuing to abuse The Onion Cellar’s / Moon Gramophone’s creepy knack for talent-scouting and giving unknown names and underdogs much-needed platforms for showcasing what they are capable of, we’ll also bring you the first ever SOUND AWAKENER live set from Hanoian youngster Nhung Nguyễn. Opening the proceedings will be the new duo of Eliza Lomas and Brett Zweiman: dreamy vocals and splattered synths and mean massive tribal beats – a cyber-round of applause to welcome GLITTER TROFF, por favor.

TICKETS

30,000 VND (early bird, strictly limited to 20 tickets, via ticketbox)

60,000 VND (advance tickets via ticketbox)

100,000 VND (on the door)

THISQUIETARMY

“This album is kinda doomy with a poppy element. It’s completely draped in sludge and fuzz but beneath the walls of filth are melodies crawling into your ears… Dark shimmery drone stuff with a hint of evil but you can always see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

THISQUIETARMY (TQA) is the solo project of Canadian Eric Quach (formerly member of the instrumental post rock outfit DESTROYALLDREAMERS).

“TQA has, depending on the critic’s personal background, been described as post-rock, krautrock, atmospheric metal, drone, ambient, sound art, experimental improvisation, shoegaze and, although to a lesser extent, gothic. The frankness with which these influences are laid bare indicates that not only are they are vital in terms of providing each work in question a unique and recognisable sound design, but that their point is neither post-modernist pastiche nor mere imitation.

Not only has Quach built up an impressive international infrastructure for his oeuvre, establishing his TQA-imprint as a respected outlet for his own material and that of a wide range of befriended artists [legendary ambient / dream-pop project lovesliescrushing, or husband/wife drone duo Nadja]; not merely has he made it from the anonymity of yet-another-guitar-and-looping-pedal-artist to the covers of leading printzines.

Most remarkably, he has created, just five entries into his album-discography, a catalogue that feels more adventurous and explorative than a lifetime’s work of others… The album for Quach, one could say, constitutes a framework within which seemingly disparate elements can be bound together and juxtaposed to fantastical effect.”

SOUND AWAKENER

“The work of this young sound artist — released under the name Sound Awakener — has been slowly spreading across the planet since she started releasing her work online in 2014. A member of a growing experimental music scene in Vietnam, Nhung’s music has evolved rapidly in a few short years. Her first release, Shape of Illusion, was made up of short piano and MIDI-programmed pieces recorded in 2011 and very much informed by her upbringing learning classical fare…

Contrast that with her most recent effort, September Traveler. Recorded just a year after Shape of Illusion, the album (available digitally and on CD accompanying a book of photos [and an exhibition] by Spanish artist Irene Cruz) sounds ghostly and beautiful, with her piano playing often hidden under layers of effects and complemented by swirling drones and melodies. It’s a huge leap forward. And she’s showing evidence of moving even further beyond it if the music on her Soundcloud page is any indication.

..One of the more confounding descriptors that have accompanied Nhung’s work so far is the word “dark.” While I can hear underpinnings of that when her noisy side comes out, her compositions feel much more ethereal and weightless to me. The dreamlike quality that would work well soundtracking a film by Stan Brakhage or Harry Smith.”

GLITTER TROFF

Dreamy vocals and splattered synths and mean massive tribal beats. GLITTER TROFF is what happens when CAMA co-proprietor Eliza Lomas, infatuated by her love for enchanting songstresses the likes of Colleen and Grouper, decides to sing, backed by multi-instrumentalist Brett Zweiman (the artist behind the Night of Clutter strand dedicated to improv-music and all manners of crazy experiments). If all this is making you think of a certain Canadian singer with a penchant for weird hair colours, let us assure you that our Hanoi-based duo is potentially even more out-there, and all the more refreshing for that.

Exhibition: 24 Mar – 12 Apr 2015

L’Espace

On the occasion of the International Francophonie Day, Plonk & Replonk will return to L’Espace for an installation exhibition which showcases posters and wacky objects.

In 1995, in Franches-Montagnes, Jura, Switzerland, Plonk & Replonk were founded. Famous for their absurdist humour, black and squeaky, they decide to shape their worldview that mixes of Vialatte or Deerhunter style with nonsense American cartoonist Gary Larson or caustic and extravagance Monty Python skits.

The exhibition is balanced by the paintings of Nguyen Manh Hung – a Vietnamese talent, as a subtle parallel.
