What are similarities between abstract expressionist paintings and minimalist design?
If there is something in common between artist Tran Thi Thu and designer Pham Kieu Phuc (co-founder of Module 7), the work reflects their life experiences and love for Northwest. Pham Kieu Phuc repressed, and refined the design thinking that she has drawn from her observation of tangible cultural values.
Hills Melody is a combination of the two artists in an exhibition, space arrangement, and fashion show. It will be opening a series of cultural events, performances, and exhibition by artist communities to fundraise Lang house’s restoration at The Muong’s Cultural Museum.

Film Screening “Song to the Front” and “Vietnam the Movie” by Nguyen Trinh Thi
Sat 09 May 2015, 6 pm
Nha San Collective
2nd floor, 24 Ly Quoc Su, Hanoi
You are invited to the screening of “Song to the Front” and “Vietnam the Movie” by Nguyen Trinh Thi.
2010 saw my first found footage film, Song to the Front, re-edited from the 1973 titular feature production by the Vietnam Feature Film Studio. The piece is also the first realized work in my pending project Vietnamese Classics Re-Cut Series.
The second film, Vietnam the Movie, is finished just a bit earlier this year. In this work, I ponder the definition of a nation and its place on the world map by watching how characters in movies and popular media had referred to Vietnam during the past 50 years.
Vietnam the Movie surveys how the word “Vietnam” appeared internationally (usually as a war, a symbol, an ideology, a concept), particularly in the context of the Vietnam War, and also the legacy of the Indochina War. It looks into the ways popular media forms our collective imaginations, memories, and understandings of a war, a country, a nation.
Along the side of Hollywood classics such as Apocalypse Now, Born on the Fourth of July, The Deer Hunter, Forrest Gump, Full Metal Jacket, etc., the forty chosen sources that directly employ the word “Vietnam” also feature the lesser known or virtually forgotten works by Harun Farocki, Fassbinder, Herzog, Nagisa Oshima, and Ann Hui. In particular, the making of this film has granted me the opportunity to explore the political stance of Jean-Luc Godard whose films held the most mention of “Vietnam”, at least among those of the filmmakers surveyed.
My motivations in recycling found footage is to preserve, deconstruct, subvert different kinds of film and media’s aesthetics and language; to re-tell, re-think, re-read, re-engage with history.
Screening Duration: 70 m.
In English with Vietnamese subtitles.

Crowdfunding Campaign “Lang’s House – Dream of Rebirth”
Time: 28 Apr 2015 – 31 Aug 2015
From The Muong’s Cultural Museum:
Lang’house – The Dream of Rebirth is the campaign of crowdfunding for rebuilding the ancient Lang house, the unique house of the Muong’s Land Lord at Hoa Binh. The house was burned at the end of 2013. It is still placed at the Muong’s Cultural Museum, Hoabinh, Vietnam.
Until now, there have been big concerns over the fire on 24 October 2013 at The Muong’ Cultural Museum. It was careless of a tourist group to ignite the flame, destroyed an over-100-year-old Lang house, and hundreds of antiquities. To those who have spent a lot of time and effort establishing and managing the museum, it is such a deep loss, sorrow, and regret. The destroyed area of Lang house had remained intact for investigation and evaluation of damage until one day when the authority informed that they would temporarily stop investigating the case of the fire. During this time, we were awaiting for support and assistance from local authorities and culture departments in restoring the damaged parts.
One year after the fire, considerable effort and work has being put in. Looking at the ashes, and charred remains, we who built and took care of the museum was strongly driven with new inspiration and design. We decided that we would continue to tell a story about the new journey of Lang House: a story of a rebirth dream. Thanks to the data & drawings kept in the museum, and the sharing of some Muong workers installing Lang House in 2007, we will be able to restore the house with all original with some remained poled and wooden floor.
We can almost see the dream that we are dreaming. Our artists and friends are eagerly preparing for some arts events, which are going to take place in Hanoi from April to July 2015. The events, along with a series of activities related to ticket selling, fundraising auction, seminars, open call in social media are within the contribution plan. The idea are given, then implemented by our beloved artists.
• It is a Fashion, Painting and Installation exhibition will be held at Module 7, 83 Xuan Dieu St. – Hanoi, from 09.05.2015
• It is a Photography exhibition of an artist group at Vietnamese Woman’s Museum (Hanoi) in the end of May 2015
• It is a big Art Exhibition of artist community in Hanoi in the end of June 2015
• It is online crowdfunding activity
and the official webpage of the Muong’s Cultural Museum
We truly appreciate your kind understanding and support. To be honest, the restoration of Lang House aims at not only the museum and those being there, but the public also. Voice could be raised, and confidence could be added to preserve and promote the values of our national culture. We wish that up-coming arts events would attract arts, and heritage lovers, it would be able to receive support from local authorities, organizations, and individuals. We are looking forward to the fact that the story of Lang House would be told by many hearts in different voices, and tone. A message of culture rebirth dream is proudly sent to you.

—
HCMC: Sun 10 May 2015, 8 pm
HCMC Opera House
In celebration of Europe Day the European Union Delegation and the Goethe-Institut are pleased to present a gala concert with the Red Socks Brassquintett from Munich.
The brass ensemble Red Socks Brassquintett has a wide-ranging repertoire, reaching from old masters such as Bach or Handel to American composers of the 20th century, from jazz to Argentine Tango. The special composition of the ensemble with five brass instruments promises an impressive sound. A very special highlight of their program is the performance with traditional German alphorns. These unusual wind instruments, up to three meters long, were played in the Alps, their sound reaching far across the mountain peaks. Now they can be heard in the Hanoi Opera House, in a joint performance with traditional Vietnamese instruments of the Bamboo Ensemble New Vitality, directed by Dong Quang Vinh.
The Red Socks Brassquintett, famous for its unusual programs, has regularly performed in Germany and abroad since it was founded in 2010. All members are classically trained musicians and play in major orchestras. Shortly after its founding, the ensemble was awarded a scholarship from the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Foundation. Since then, the quintet has received further awards and scholarships as well as winning several international competitions, such as the International Brass Competition Passau and the International Jan Koetsier Competition, and has references from numerous major political and cultural institutions.

Graphic Novels often deal with historic, political, and social topics. Reinhard Kleist, too, picks up these issues and develops his plot mainly by reference to individual cases. His latest publication “The Dream of Olympia” tells the story of the sprinter Samia Yusuf Omar who represented Somalia at the Olympic Games in 2008 in Peking. Her dream of Olympia ends tragically, when she drowns offshore of Malta during and attempted escape from Islamic extremists.
In the context of the 5th European Literature Days the successful graphic novel-artist will bring the legendary musician Johnny Cash back to live at the occasion of a spectacular Live Drawing-Event. Inspired by live-music of the most well-known country singer of all times, he will create illustrations to each song. Thanks to a camera in his back, the audience is able to witness the process of the works’ genesis live.
Reinhard Kleist 1
From 10th to 31th of May the award-winning comic-artist will show selected works of his graphic novels at the Goethe-Institut. During an artist talk on the 20th of May, he will discuss and explain his works. On this occasion he will also talk about comic-art in Germany and Vietnam with artists.
During his stay at the Goethe-Insitut, Reinhard Kleist will blog his impressions from Hanoi and its inhabitants. In so doing he will share the moments and scenes which he captures by pencil with the public on a daily basis.
Besides a workshop with students of the art school of Hanoi, Kleist will conduct a workshop with young, professional comic-artists at the Goethe-Institut.

5th European Literature Days in Hanoi
07 – 10 May 2015
Goethe Institut, L’Espace, Casa Italia
See detailed program below
From Goethe Institut:
Following the success of recent years EUNIC, the association of European cultural institutions and embassies, presents for the fifth time the European Literature Days in Hanoi. Literature enthusiasts can look forward to readings and workshops as well as an unusual Comic Concert and compelling short films. From crime novels through short stories to children’s books, there is something for readers of all ages. The coordination for this year’s event has been undertaken by the Institute Français – L’Espace.
Eight European countries – Denmark, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Israel, Poland and Sweden – will present works which have recently been published in Vietnamese, in collaboration with several major publishers.
Picture Books, illustrations and Comics: The Power of Images
This year, the focus of European Literature Days is the interplay between image and word, in comics and children’s books.
Sweden celebrates the freckled redhead Pippi Longstocking with a party in honor of her 70th birthday, featuring readings, painting and crafts. And it’s not only the Swedes who are putting young readers in the focus of this year’s European Literature Days: British author Jasper Fforde explores new territory with his detective novels for children and young people – and he will personally come to Hanoi at the invitation of the British Council to meet to his young readers here. The adventures of a giant pear are at the center of the fantasy story of the Dane Jakob Martin Strid. And the Italian children’s book was also inspired by culinary delights: the mouse Geronimo Stilton lives on an island made of cheese. At the invitation of the Goethe Institute, children’s book author Annette Köhn tells stories in her playful comic about the little dragon Leto, who finds new friends in Vietnam. The award-winning German children’s book “Rico, Oskar und das Herzgebreche” tells of two unlikely friends and their adventures. Françoize Boucher takes on the world of young people in her humorous books, presented by L’Espace.

He presents two short films and reads from his short stories, which are now also available in Vietnamese. This will be followed by a reading with Le Chuc presenting one of the most famous novels of psychological literature, “The Trial” by Franz Kafka. Reading pleasure of a special kind is offered with the novel “Other Pleasures” by Polish author Jerzy Pilch, while the book “Lettera ad un bambino mai nato” by the Italian author Oriana Fallaci provides food for thought. Literature Days will close at the Goethe Institute with the comic artist Reinhard Kleist doing live drawing to a concert of the music of legendary country singer Johnny Cash. More illustrations and comics by Reinhard Kleist can be seen in the exhibition that opens on the same evening at the Goethe-Institut.
The extensive program is complemented by bookstands of the publishers in the Goethe-Institut, in which many books will be available at special prices. There is also an exhibition of new books from Germany at the Goethe Institute in cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair.

“Someone must have been telling tales about Josef K. for one morning, without having done anything wrong, he was arrested”. This is the first sentence of the most famous novel written by the virtuosic writer Franz Kafka. On the morning of his 30th birthday, Josef K. is arrested, without being conscious of any guilt and with nobody telling him the reason for the arrest. Step by step the narrator Josef K. tries to cope with this mysterious incident and to solve the case. As the nature of this crime is neither revealed to him nor the reader, Kafka achieves in creating suspense and an incredibly psychologically sophisticated plot.
The term kafkaesque also derives from the novel. It is mainly used in the context of situations which are similar to the one of Josef K.: the experience of facing an absurd and hostile bureaucracy which has developed a momentum of its own.
