Come to the next session of Cinexin Hanoi this week with the screening of “My Blueberry Nights”.

Legendary filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai directs Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz, and Norah Jones in his first English-language feature film — a romantic road movie detailing the cross-country journey of a woman who sets off across the United States in hopes of mending her broken heart. Elizabeth (Jones) has just been through a particularly nasty breakup, and now she’s ready to leave her friends and memories behind as she chases her dreams across the country. In order to support herself on her journey, Elizabeth picks up a series of waitress jobs along the way. As Elizabeth crosses paths with a series of lost souls whose yearnings are even greater than her own — including a troubled cop (David Strathairn), his estranged wife (Rachel Weisz), and an embittered gambler (Natalie Portman) — their emotional turmoil ultimately helps her gain a greater understanding of her own problems.

Sun 12 May 2013, 6 pm

274 Nghi Tam

Vietnam Artist Round Table (VART) invites you to join our art conversation about CHANGE IN URBAN LIFE with artist Hà Mạnh Thắng with the his idea on time, memory and history. The specific topic is “Art as the metaphor of a tree in cities”, moderated by Mr. Trần Hùng.

About artist

Ha Manh Thang was born in 1980 in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam. He left his native province in the North of Vietnam to study at the Hanoi University of Fine Arts from which he graduated in 2004.

Ha Manh Thang’s artistic work reflects Today’s social life in Vietnam. With bright colors, he combines on acrylic on paper the symbols and motifs of both tradition and modernity. His paintings depict the new Vietnam after Doi Moi, the economic progress, the opening, the new taste for expensive branded goods from Western and also the need to preserve Vietnamese heritage and traditions.

Some of his paintings belong to the Singapore Art Museum’s collection.

He now lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam.

“For me art is a way to define my own life in a different way. It is like a circle of time, memory and history.

I am interested in how meaning is ascribed to images especially historically and culturally significant images.

My works usually weave images from my own cultural history and pop culture with the social exigencies I find in contemporary life…”

Chula
6 Nhat Chieu, near Water Park, Tay Ho, Hanoi

Come to the last screening of “Crossroads: Between Vietnam & Mongolia”  with live music accompaniment this Friday.

Perrine Le Roy’s film “Crossroads: Between Vietnam and Mongolia”  is a silent exploration of the daily life of both countries: from emptiness to crowds, family relationships and the everyday expressions of religion to attitudes to work. Rather than being a comparison between cultures, the film instead represents a melting pot; from a Vietnamese cyclo-driver to a Mongolian shaman’s spirit ritual, Perrine’s film brings cultures closer together.

The film will is accompanied by a live score from three talented Vietnamese musicians : Nguyen Quynh Chi (accordionist), Dinh Lan (singer) and Nguyen Thuy Dung (Zither player). And for this last performance, Bill Badger (percussion) will join them! After the screening, the musicians will play more music!

Screening of “Be Kind Rewind”

Wed 08 May 2013, 7 pm
The Hanoi Bicycle Collective
44, lane 31 Xuan Dieu Str, Hanoi

Come to the next session of Cinexin Hanoi this week with the screening of “Be Kind Rewind”.

When a bumbling movie lover becomes magnetized while attempting to sabotage a local power plant and accidentally erases all of the videotapes in the small video store where his best friend works, the pair attempt to keep the store’s loyal customer base by remaking as many of the top-renting movies as possible.

Mike (MosDef) is an employee at Be Kind Rewind, a modest mom and pop video store that is owned by Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover). Mike’s best friend Jerry (Jack Black) works in an auto garage/junkyard directly adjacent to a local power plant. Lately Jerry has become increasingly paranoid about the effects that the power plant is having on his health. Convinced that he has developed a brain tumor from working in such close proximity to the power plant, Jerry attempts to sabotage the plant. Unfortunately for Jerry, his brain is magnetized in the process. The next time Jerry goes to visit Mike at Be Kind Rewind, the powerful magnetization emanating from his brain erases every videotape in the store. Now the only way for Mike and Jerry to be sure that Be Kind Rewind stays in business is to remake every film on the shelves before the customers notice. But when word gets out that Mike and Jerry have remade such Hollywood classics as Backto the Future, Robocop, The Lion King, and Rush Hour without permission, the store is threatened with copyright violations and forced to close its doors. In the aftermath of the closing, Mr. Fletcher and his employees discover just how loyal their customers really are when the entire neighborhood pools their resources to transform the junkyard into a legitimate movie studio and produce an entirely original film detailing the incredible adventures of a local jazz legend.

Free entry.

Screening of “Encounters at the End of the World”

Tue 07 May 2013, 7.30 pm
Snap Cafe
32 Tran Ngoc Dien, District 2, HCMC

Come to watch the film “Encounters at the End of the World” (99 minutes, Werner Herzog). In this film Herzog once again offers a poignant study of the human psyche amid haunting landscapes. Herzog was first drawn to Antarctica when he saw the underwater footage of his friend Henry Kaiser. In 2007 he was invited to film on the southern icecap by the US agency the National Science Foundation.

Herzog’s Encounters is an alternately mordant and ecstatic portrait of a harsh environment and the people who live there; not oddballs, Herzog insists, but research scientists, philosophers and vulcanologists, who we see peering into viciously active lava fields. There are the expert divers who drill 30ft vertical holes through the icecap to access its frigid, sci-fi underside, and then dive below to film. “These people only seem odd because when you look at the media and magazines, there is this kind of uniformity of people. Down there, you have characters who do not fit into magazines.”

Tickets: FREE (donations for our chosen charity Wildlife at Risk are gladly accepted)

Tickets and Band Line-up for ASEAN Music Festival

Sat 11 May 2013, 2 pm
American Club
19-21 Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi

CAMA has announced the full line up for Artwork is Work: ASEAN Music Festival with DJ Slo-Lo, DJ Maft Sai, Mimetals and Lang Van Records’ rap super stars Minh Kien, Wowy and Nah all joining in the celebration of Asian culture on Saturday 11 May.

Molam International (Thailand)

Molam International are a one of a kind group formed by Zudrangma Records (Thailand), brought together to perform vintage molam, with 21st Century vibes. Their blend of Isan musicianship, powered by one of Bangkok’s funkiest rhythm sections, was formed by recruiting veteran molam musos like phin master Khammao Perdthanon and khaen maestro Sawai Kaewsombat and adding the drive of local rockers Piyanart Jotikasthira (bass) and Phusana Treeburut (drums). Their shows in Bangkok are a riot of furious Isan rhythms and dancing bodies as Thai traditional music is fused to the future sounds of rock. No one else in the whole world looks or sounds like this group – which is why we’re proud to have them headline ASEAN Music Festival.

MUON (Singapore)

Singaporean five-piece MUON is a musical collective delving through electronic experimentation and beat-science, fusing together bricolages spanning IDM, ambient trip-hop, and jazzy cinematic soundscapes. With four critically acclaimed albums available for download online, MUON have all the evidence they need of their creativity and talent. MUON have taken to the big stage for festivals like the Mosaic Music Festival, The People’s Party, Baybeats and represented Singaporean music at the British Council’s global music project Musicity. On May 11, MUON will again be responsible for bringing Singaporean music to a global audience at Hanoi’s first ASEAN Music Festival.

Bloodsugar Politik (Myanmar)

That’s right, they’re from Myanmar. As the country slowly opens up, Myanmar nationals are for the first time finding stages on which to share their culture with the world. The Yangon music scene is pretty much completely unknown outside of the country so the appearance of Blood Sugar Politik at an international music festival couldn’t be more timely. With more than a decade of writing energetic music together, the band – formerly known as Big Bag, are as tight as you could hope for with a fan base to prove it. Big Bag sold out stadiums before changing direction in 2010 after being introduced to foreign musical styles by international bands. The new project Bloodsugar Politik is an intoxicating blend of rock, punk, ska, and folk with lashings of energy and subtle undertones of Burmese classic rock.

Pulso (Philippines)

The Philippines is full of great musicians and bands many of whom have come to play Hanoi in the past, such as Caliph8 and Up Dharma Down. This year’s model is Pulso, an experimental ambient-driven group signed to the excellent Terno Recordings label. Pulso do melody and rhythm, matching patterns and overlaying acousitic harmonies into dreamy post-rock pieces. The Philippines love them, let’s see if they catch on with others in the ASEAN region.

18+ (Vietnam)

In Vietnam rock and metal are massive and the cream of the crop right now are 18+, five Hanoi kids on the way up. In the last year they’ve gone from unknown to blowing away fans up and down the country at Rockstorm. That’s a pretty big rise, but these home-grown Nu-Metal heroes have the sound to fill expectations. In Hanoi venues, 18+ have had young crowds go wild as their heavy sound and brutal vocals have struck the right chord with Vietnam’s youth. At ASEAN Music Festival 2013, Vietnam’s next big thing will be able to show an international audience what Vietnamese bands can do.

Mimetals (Vietnam)

Hanoi indie rockers Mimetals will open Artwork is Work: ASEAN Music Festival. The five piece band are new on the capital’s music scene but their mix of alternative rock, indie and disco did a lot to impress when they played at RockPassion’s 7 year anniversary and gave a real indication of their talent at CKX Unlimited Music Festival for over 5,000 young music fans.

Lang Van Records

US/HCMC based record label Lang Van is bringing a storm of Vietnamese talent to the festival including Minh Kien, Wowy and Nah!

Minh Kien (Lang Van Records / Vietnam)

Minh Kien has defied the doubters – most notably his parents – to become one of Vietnam’s finest young performers. The all-singing all-dancing 20 something is exactly that, with the ability to sing, dance and even beat-box.

Wowy (Lang Van Records / Vietnam)

From a street artists and break dancer, Wowy has emerged as one of the south’s toughest rappers. His acute, rough lyrics come from his upbringing in Saigon’s backstreets and feature common, in your face street-slang. Wowy changed the local media’s perception of rap with the succeses of his album Bay That Xa and went viral with 2012’s Internet sensation Sai Gon Dep Lam.

Nah (Lang Van Records / Vietnam)

Inspired by Eminem and Tupac, Nah is an underground force on Saigon’s new Hip Hop scene. Nah openly discuss social issues and his demo songs Doi, Muon Co Tien, Won’t Let You Down, and Lam Chu The Gioi are among the most visited and listened to from underground rap forums to major music streaming services. As a bilingual emcee, Nah has attracted overseas interest and really announced himself by combining his beats and flows over a simple yet sensational verse taken from a Trinh Cong Song classic.

Festival DJs

Zudrangma Records’ Maft Sai and Sub Elements’ DJ Slo-Lo have been confirmed to keep the party going on the main stage

DJ Slo-Lo (Sub Elements / Vietnam)

DJ Slo-Lo has been developing bass culture in Hanoi for as long as anyone can remember. His Sub Elements crew have been the driving forces behind making Reggae, Dancehall and Dubstep the capital’s hottest genres. Follow them on facebook and catch Slo-Lo at Artwork is Work: ASEAN Music Festival.

Maft Sai (Zudrangma Records / Thailand)

With an emphasis on music built for outside parties and the worldwide dancehall, from Kingston to Ubon, from Accra to Khon Kaen, DJ Maft Sai promises to take you on a journey through tough basslines, heavy percussion and music designed to move any crowd from around the globe.

Maft Sai is the world’s premier collector of Thai vinyl and the main authority on the genres of Luk Thung, Molam and Isan, often referred to as “Thai Funk”. At live sets in Bangkok and around South East Asia, Maft Sai combines these feet-tapping Asian forms with some of the finest roots tunes from Africa and around the world. Isan Dancehall never fails to get the party started with far out / far east sounds that you can’t hear anywhere else, brought to you in the warm glow of vinyl.

Expect Eastern sonic equations – heavy Molam, dense African breakdowns, liquid Luk Thung and rare Reggae cuts.

Tickets

Tickets can be bought on the door on the day of the event. Entrance is VND300,000 or VND100,000 with an ASEAN passport or Vietnamese ID card. Children under 12 go free.

Screening of “Tambien la lluvia” (Even the rain)

Tue 07 May 2013, 7 pm
The Hanoi Bicycle Collective
44, lane 31 Xuan Dieu Str, Hanoi

Come to the next session of Cinexin Hanoi this week with the screening of ”Tambien la lluvia” (Even the rain).

TAMBIEN LA LLUVIA sets up an intriguing dialogue about Spanish imperialism through incidents taking place some 500 years apart, while examining the personal belief systems of the members of a film crew headed by director Sebastian (Gael Garcia Bernal) and his producer Costa (Luis Tosar) who arrive in Bolivia to make a revisionist film about the conquest of Latin America.

Set in February and March of 2000 when real-life protests against the privatization of water rocked the nation, the film reflexively blurs the line between fiction and reality in what Variety calls “a powerful, richly layered indictment of the plight of Latin America’s dispossessed.” Carlos Aduviri is dynamic as a local who is cast as a 15th century native in the film, but when the make-up and loin cloth come off, he sails into action protesting his community’s deprivation of water at the hands of the government. Meanwhile, Gael Garcia Bernal’s Idealist film director is as relentless as Werner Herzog infamously was in making FITZCARALDO, pushing ahead against all odds, ignoring the prevailing danger about to disrupt at any moment. Despite the devastation emerging around him, Sebastian seems unable to engage with any emotion over than a dogmatic desire to get his film done. And of course, the film also recalls themes in Herzog’s AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD and the film-within-a-film scenes are as brutal as any in APOCALYPTO.

Performance Art “The Ghosts of the Day”

Sat 11 May 2013, 9.30 – 10.30 am
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho

The Ghosts of the Day Performance by artist Doan Minh Hoan (Dao Xuan 8 co-director with artist Dao Anh Khanh, and Vietnam’s Got Talent 2013 finalist) will be held. “The Ghosts of the Day” was created for the purpose of highlighting sun protection jackets for their lack of aesthetics and negative imagery that they create in the greater city of Hanoi.

It is my hope to bring awareness to these feelings through this performance so that a new style, look or thinking is introduced to our jacket culture. The use of sun protection clothing is not wrong, but if someone were to look at the culture of our country by just noticing people in the busy traffic with their many costumes, it would surely create a startling encounter. We should make these sun protective jackets aesthetic, giving pride and fashion to women and having them contribute to a beautiful and conscious country.

JF Garage Concert 03: J-Music for Brass Band

Fri 10 May 2013, 8 – 9 pm
Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam
27 Quang Trung
Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội

In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam presents its third act of the JF Garage Concert, “J-Music for Brass Band” by Hanoi Brass Band.

Hanoi Brass Band was formed in 1998 when the original members were students of the Hanoi Conservatory of Music (the present Vietnam National Academy of Music). In 2008, the band was officially named as Hanoi Brass Band with some changes of the members.

The band consists of 6 professional musicians from Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra: Mr. Kim Xuan Hieu (Horn) as the band leader, Mr. Tran Hien (Trombone), Mr. Le Minh Chieu (Tuba), Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai (Trumpet), Mr. Pham Van Hieu (Trumpet) and Mr. Nghiem Manh Tuan (Drums).

All members are highly capable of conveying nuance of diverse music and Mr. Pham Van Hieu in particular, supported by the Japan Foundation, he just took an intensive training at NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, Japan in December 2012, and has developed his expressiveness further.

In this JF garage concert, Hanoi Brass Band will sound brass instruments to play masterpieces of marches, jazzy tunes and popular songs of Vietnam and the world. Moreover, as one of the highlights of the concert, they will play Japanese popular songs such as “Furusato [My Country Home]” and “Okina Furudokei [Grandfather’s Clock]” in Hanoi Brass Band’s original style and arrangement.

Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi). All free seats, first-come, first-served.

What do a stolen bicycle, a shortsighted rabbit named Supa-Hasi and the singer Jonny Cash have in common?

Right – nothing!

But along with other numerous protagonists they form the very colorful and multifaceted exhibition “Comics, Manga & Co. – The New German Comics Culture”. The exhibition is part of a broader series of “Europe Days 2013” events.

The exhibition of 55 different comics will take place in the Goethe-Institute Hanoi from 8th May – 2nd June 2013. It presents two generations of artists, which have been influencing the German comic culture in many different ways.

You will discover detailed and scientific drawings of Jens Harder in Alpha, which shows the evolutionary history from the Big Bang to the first humans, or the exciting film-like drawn graphic novels by Reinhard Kaiser or the girl manga by Christina Plaka – the comic book world knows (almost) no bounds!

13 artists were selected for this exhibition, whose versatile works present all important German tendencies.
Line Hoven

We are delighted to welcome one of the participating comic artists in Hanoi: Line Hoven will be our guest at the “comic talk” and will guide the audience through the exhibition and talk to young artists about German and Vietnamese comic culture. The Goethe Institute will also organize other activities for the exhibition.

Reggae Funk with South Rakkas Crew

Sat 11 May, 7 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho

HRC presents Mad Decent’s don of digital dancehall-electro reggae funk: Jamaican born, California raised Dennis D-Rakkas – leader of South Rakkas Crew.

Diplo and Timberlake? Tricky and Michael Jackson? M.I.A and Thom Yorke? Deerhoof and Elephant Man? Beck to The Bug? Just one name links up this diverse, groundbreaking posse: forget Kevin Bacon – when it comes to six degrees of the most cutting-edge music production out there, there’s only one name. South Rakkas Crew.

Heading to Hanoi to bruise up Bass Streets on Sat 11th May, South Rakkas Crew will bring the hype with a world famous live set of rugged dancehall, shameless pop and rude riddims on their 10 year worldwide anniversary tour.

“South Rakkas Crew make some of the most electrifying dance music on the planet” – The Guardian.

“When it comes to knowing what mashes a dance, few production outfits can match South Rakkas Crew” – Pitchfork.

South Rakkas first gained fame for their blazing dancehall riddims (“Clappas,” “Red Alert,” “Bionic Ras,” Chinkuzi,” anyone?), which brought production work for stars like Vybz Karte, Mr. Vegas, Elephant Man. But it’s not for nothing that XLR8R recently praised South Rakkas for their “boundary-pushing” powers; indeed these futuristic rhythm killers can’t be held down to any one sound or style. South Rakkas Crew can flex from Beenie Man and Bounty Killer one moment, T-Pain the next, and then on to the likes of M.I.A., Lily Allen, Duran Duran, Justin Timberlake, Warrior Queen, Britney Spears and Shakira – all of whom have been touched by South Rakkas’ edgy studio savvy.

After moving to Bristol in 2008 Remidy MC was being recognized as a solid versatile host and crowd pleasing vocalist, picked up by all the promotions and movements that mattered he soon engraved himself in the prolific world-famous Drum&bass Bristol scene.

In 2009/2010 Remidy also found himself with many UK festival bookings to add to his credentials such as GLASTONBURY, BOARDMASTERS and BESTIVAL hosting for such acts as HIGH CONTRAST, STANTON WARRIORS, LONDON ELEKTRICITY and NERO to name a few.

‘Encounter Maps’ Interactive Live Performance

Encounter Testimony: 07 May 2013
Exhibition & Open Scene: 7 – 11 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho

Hanoi Rock City presents the interactive performance ‘Encounter Maps’, acting by Clémence Bardaine and Natacha Milosevic.

This project is born from the meeting between Clémence Bardaine, plastic artist, and Natacha Milosevic, actress and director; both from artistic backgrounds as diverse as similar, but certainly animated by the same desire; the need to say, experiment, to embody, to try, to fail, over and over again. We talk about the encounter, precisely that one which we tested and questioned in our work << Come, go, stay >> in 2012. For the encounter to happen there must be, of course, two persons…

We invite to be one of her.

Encounter Maps is an experimental work based on the encounter between two people, face to face at both ends of a sheet of paper. Both actors are equipped with tools for tracing such as charcoal, emulating an extention of the hands.

A sheet of paper as a stage traces as words and you as actor. The story: our encounter.

We invite you to face us to draw together, and through this four hands drawing trace the path of our dialogue on paper.

We consider the drawing as an x-ray of our experience of the moment. Each meeting paper will be filmed.

An exhibition and a projection will be the object of a second event. We will propose to the participants to react about the experience, the being purpose is to generate with the participants, spaces for reflection and transmission of the rapport between one to another.

Exhibition and Award Ceremony of the Drawing Contest “What Your New Year Looks Like”

Exhibition: 04 & 05 May 2013, 10 am – 5 pm
Award Ceremony: Sun 05 May 2013, 9 am – 11 am

You are invited to the exhibition and award ceremony of the drawing contest “What your new year looks like”.

Theme of the competition: When the New Year comes, adults often have their worries, plans, goals or desire. How about children? We want to create a playground so that they can freely express their thoughts, personality and reveal what they want for their own NEW YEAR.

Fundraiser Night at Umbrella – Keep that Funk Alive

Sat 4 May, 8 pm
Umbrella Bar
61 Ma May, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi

Hoa Duc Cong (or CK Animation) is a talented dancer, well-known in the Vietnamese hip-hop scene. This successful 22 year old, has won several awards for his great dance skills and has been acknowledged as the next-big-thing in both Vietnam and worldwide. He has been an amazing inspiration to others who also have big dreams of dancing hip-hop.

Although CK has achieved a lot of success under the stage light, hardly anyone knows that he was born with just 1 kidney. He has a small physique, but has always seemed to be healthy, therefore his family only found out about his condition when he turned 16 – however by then it was too late. His disease had reached the last stage of renal failure. So for the past 6 years, CK has been bravely living with dialysis, 3 times a week.

From the day CK’s family found out about his disease, his family has been doing their best to keep CK alive. His father is a xe-om driver, who has been working hard his whole life to support his family. But year after year, with old age creeping in, he has no longer been able to provide any financial support. The whole family’s income now depends on his mother’s small shop outside a temple in Vietnam.

Dialysis prices have been increasing and to save CK’s life, his family has sold all of their belongings.

The money CK has been able to make through dancing and teaching dance classes could only merely get him through the day, but what he really needs is a kidney transplant.

Which would save his life and keep his bright star shining among us. We, his friends, fans and family, hope that with this fundraiser we can keep CK dancing, making his dream come true and inspiring others with his amazing strength and positivity.
To make CK’s transplant possible we have organized this Fundraiser Night, full of exciting events and are hoping that you will attend and help us save CK’s life.

Gulliver Travels to Vietnam

ADGE and TNT Theatre Britain presents
Gulliver Travels
by Jonathan Swift
directed by Paul Stebbings
Performances in English with Vietnamese subtitles

HANOI OPERA HOUSE
01 Trang Tien, Hanoi
Tue Wed 08 May 2013, 8 pm
HCMC OPERA HOUSE
No. 7 Lam Son Square, D.1, HCMC
10 and 11 May 2013, 8 pm
Thu Fri 10 May 2013, 11 am

GULLIVER’S TRAVELS has been called the greatest satirical work ever written – in an age where the world once again seems to have turned upside down Swift’s caustic wit and irreverent honesty have never been more relevant.

GULLIVER’S TRAVELS is often thought of as a children’s story, but has never been anything of the sort! TNT rescue this literary masterpiece from the pygmies who tried to turn it into a juvenile entertainment and create a play that asks us the very mature questions that Swift was posing three hundred years ago: what is the moral basis of government? What is the value of money? What is the aim of science? And finally, when humans behave like vicious animals why should they be valued higher than beasts? Each of these questions is addressed by Swift in his travels to four different lands – not only Lilliput. TNT dramatise each of the four journeys and because satire is only sharp if it is contemporary, we naturally apply Swift’s critique to our own troubled world.

If the themes of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS are deeply serious the form is comic (even hilarious) and always thrilling. This is one of the greatest adventure stories, a travellers tale that is all the more exciting for being a fiction. It might even be described as the world’s first science fiction classic. The TNT production employs comedy, acrobatics, stilts, live music and razor sharp dialogue to explore Swift’s masterpiece and our own (collapsing?) world. TNT are probably the most popular international touring theatre, performing a dozen productions in forty countries on three continents this season, ranging from Shakespeare to contemporary dramas.

Director Paul Stebbings updates his highly successful 1996 production of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS to challenge the modern audience and provide a sparkling evening of satire that promises to tickle the belly and trouble the mind….Lilliput ahoy!

This production of GULLIVER travels across Europe and Asia for eight months visiting some 20 countries from Indonesia to Britain and Korea to Malta.

Artwork is Work: ASEAN Music Festival

Sat 11 May 2013, 2 pm
American Club
19 – 21 Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi

The United States Embassy Hanoi and CAMA Vietnam are proud to announce the inaugural Artwork is Work: ASEAN Music Festival. This celebration of creative, Asian youth culture will take place in Hanoi on May 11 featuring bands from the ASEAN region as well as art and community groups from within Hanoi.

Making their way to the festival are a host of top quality musicians all looking to showcase the sounds of their country. Festival performers include garage rockers Blood Sugar Politik (Myanmar), traditional Thai funk act Molam International (Thailand), the post-rock algorithms of Pulso (Philippines), Vietnam’s nu-metal heroes 18+ (Vietnam) and genre-defying electronic sound artists Muon (Singapore). Besides non-stop live music on the main stage, the festival will feature a creative arts market run by the Hanoi Flea Market and a visual arts center curated by Hanoi’s Onion Cellar collective.

As well as promoting pride in the cultural vibrancy of modern ASEAN nations, the festival is also intended to highlight respect for artists in Asia via Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). IPR represents a vital part of the US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement as well as a core responsibility for countries joining the WTO. But the issue is far from just another international obligation, IPR is a critical requirement for any country to develop technologically-advanced industries and promote creativity and innovation among its people.

Protecting a nation’s creative rights is vital to the development of homegrown industries in arts and technology. For the sake of composers, performing artists, writers, painters, computer programmers, caricaturists, musicians, illustrators and other creators of original works, Artwork is Work: ASEAN Music Festival seeks to highlight the importance of intellectual property rights enforcement in ASEAN countries.
