VN Tribes Hit CAMA ATK
Fri 25 May 2012, 9 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
This Friday 25 May, VN Tribes will be performing at CAMA ATK as part of Synergy’s monthly residency.
VN Tribes’ mix of beats and live melodic vocals have made them quite simply one of the most exciting live acts on the Hanoi circuit. Influenced by the sounds that surround them in Vietnam, the duo incorporate Dan ca, Hat Ru, Vong Co, Cai Luong, Nhac Tai Tu, Quan Ho, Ca Tru and even the atonal drones of funeral music with dance floor grade beats.
Long time Hanoi residents, DJ Y and vocalist Pat met through a mutual love of music and the traditions of Vietnam. It wasn’t long before they started sampling all the myriad sounds that attracted them from their adopted homeland whether from people, traditional instruments, ethnic communities or any other sounds that the duo found to be anachronistic. Live, they blend them with the Techno sounds that they grew up with.
Boogie if you can.
Pat: “I am trying to achieve a Vietnamese influenced harmonious new sound. With VN tribes, I feel myself as an experimental architect trying to build a new kind of house. I see the tracks DJ Y plays as the groove and foundation and my part as the melody and interior design. To a certain degree, when both match, we create harmony and we’ve got our hit.”
For more on VN Tribes, check out Synergy’s great interview.
Support will be provided by Hanoi Sessions, known for blending old Vietnamese roots tracks with the best sounds modernity has to offer, most infamously with this year’s Youtube Hip Hop sensation, Oi Gioi Oi.
Free entry.

Nobel Prize Octavio Paz, once said he is: “the strangest of Mexican writers, a true cosmopolite poet telling stories from a territory wider than just a country because he is the poet from the skin. That is why his language is the touch, the sense that implies all the others.”
His novel Mogador, published by City Lights in San Francisco in 1993, was awarded the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize, the most prestigious literary recognition in Mexico. Since 1988 he has been the Chief Editor and founding publisher of Latin America’s leading Arts Magazine: Artes de Mexico.

Screening of “INSURGENTES”
30 and 31 May 2012, 8 pm
Cinematheque
The Onion Cellar proudly presents 2 official screenings of INSURGENTES – a documentary / road movie about STEVEN WILSON (Porcupine Tree, No-Man, Blackfield, Bass Communion etc)
“My fear is that the current generation of kids who’re being born into this information revolution, growing up with the Internet, cell phones, iPods, this download culture, ‘American Idol,’ reality TV, prescription drugs, PlayStations — all of these things kind of distract people from what’s important about life, which is to develop a sense of curiosity about what’s out there.”
It’s this curiosity that took the artist around the world to find inspiration to create and record his music.
Insurgentes documented what happened to Steven Wilson in this journey, and is a portrait of an increasingly rare artist who works with music and media out of love and not for fame and fortune.
Through travels to different cultures and continents we meet with other personalities in the industry, including Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, the Israeli superstar Aviv Geffen and the legendary producer Trevor Horn, and hear different opinions on the current and future state of music. The result, as Lasse remarks, is ‘a look at today’s download culture and the effects it has on the artists trying to create and share what is truly in their hearts and minds.’ The film looks into the issues of creating, packaging and marketing music in an era when iPods, mp3′s and download culture are changing and eroding perceptions of exactly what an album is supposed to sound and look like.
Besides painting an honest picture of Steven Wilson as an artist and as a person, Insurgentes is also Lasse Hoile’s ode to art-house cinema: its bleak and surreal images would not be out of place in an Andrei Tarkovsky movie.

Public Dress Rehearsal of Faces
Goethe Institut VietnamFaces 1
Wed 23 May 2012, 8 pm
Culture House of Dist. Tay Ho
691 Lac Long Quan, Tay Ho, Hanoi
As the continuation of a successful cooperation, in February 2011 the Goethe Institute invited the Franco-German choreographer duo of Raphael Hillebrand and Sébastien Ramirez to do a new edition of the dance theater piece Nhieu Mat.Faces with Hanoi hip-hop dancers. Following performances in Hanoi and HCMC, the piece went on tour in Europe with the support of the Goethe-Institut:
In France and Germany the dancers and musicians from Hanoi were enthusiastically celebrated; in Berlin – where many Vietnamese young people live with their families – the applause was particularly loud. Now Nhieu Mat.Faces has been invited to the International Dance Festival in Jakarta and, again with the support of the Goethe Institute, will appear there before an international audience. In addition, a further performance is planned in Surabaya. A great chance for the young artists to showcase their unique hip-hop concept and compare it with that of other groups from different countries and to expand their international contacts.
What is special about Nhieu Mat.Faces: This is not just about brilliant technique and daring jumps, this is a genuine dance theater piece, it tells stories, reflects experiences. The masks that give the piece its name stand for the various authorities and role expectations between which young people need to find their identity. Also unusual is the music: traditional instruments participate on stage, so that tradition and modernity visibly and audibly connect – hip-hop in Vietnamese, this special variation will surely excite audiences in Jakarta.
Until Wednesday, 23 May, the dancers and musicians are rehearsing at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi for the performances in Indonesia from Nhieu Mat.Faces. On Wednesday evening there is a public dress rehearsal.
Free entrance.

Gestures: The Six Tones in Hanoi
Sat 19 May 2012, 8 pm
Kim Ngan Temple
42 Hang Bac Str, Hanoi
The Vietnamese Swedish group The Six Tones is performing at Den Kim Ngan (Kim Ngan temple) in 42 Hang Bac street on 19th of May at 20:00. Guests: Marie Fahlin (choreography) and Kim Ngoc Tran (composer and performer). Entry free.
This performance is an exploration of musical gesture: sound and visual movement. The Hanoi based composer Kim Ngoc Tran and choreographer Fahlin are developing a composition titled Chuyên Dich (Movement) (2011-12) which will be premiered (the first part) on Saturday.
Inside/Outside, an installation conceived of by Nguyen Thanh Thuy, in collaboration with the Swedish choreographer Marie Fahlin, to be premiered in November of this year, are part of this workshop. The first results of this work will be a series of improvisations that take gesture in traditional Vietnamese music as point of departure. The performance ends with a joint improvisation. The performance is organized by E- Center (Center for experimental music and art) and Nha San Studio in Hanoi and takes place with support from the Swedish Research Council and Malmö Academy of Music, Sweden.
The Six Tones
The Vietnamese language is a tonal language, using six tones or intonations. The Six Tones is a Swedish/Vietnamese project that works on a long-term basis on the amalgamation of art music from Vietnam and Europe. The group works by means of transcriptions of traditional Vietnamese music for Western stringed instruments and traditional Vietnamese instruments, free improvisation with live-electronics, and with new commissions to composers both from the West and from Vietnam. The Six Tones are Thanh Thuy and Ngo Tra My, two Vietnamese master performers, and the guitarist Stefan Östersjö. Since the project started, the trio has been collaborating with the composer and improviser Henrik Frisk, who has both composed works for the ensemble as well as toured with the group as a lap top improviser. The main ambition with The Six Tones is to create a foundation for a meeting between two distinct musical cultures on equal terms. Building on a concept of mutual learning, musical traditions from Vietnamese and Western art music are brought together into music that aims to reach beyond a mere collage-like superimposition of elements and strive for a more complex and experimentally oriented sound.
The Six Tones 2
Marie Fahlin is educated at the School for New Dance Development (SNDD) in Amsterdam, 1988–1992. Fahlin has produced approximately 40 choreographies and her work has been shown in all of the major stages in Stockholm. In the last years she has also made extensive work in the public space, using both dance, music and visual art as part of the performances. Her work contains a wide range of forms, from solo pieces in silence on stage to choreographies for 20 dancers outdoors in the city center of Stockholm. She collaborates frequently with other choreographers and artists and she has also worked as a dancer with some of the most interesting Swedish choreographers. Fahlin has worked and performed in USA, Moldavia, Cambodia, Norway and Brazil. She has also worked twice in Hanoi, Vietnam, with both solo (extended to a duet together with the head of the VNOB Mr. Pham Anh Phuong) and a group piece performed at the National Opera. Fahlin is also a curator and producer of festivals and artistic development projects within choreography.

Screening of “Sound of Noise”
Sat 19 May 2012, 8 pm
Trầm Cafe
111 Nguyen Phi Khanh, Dist. 1, HCMC
After the successful screening in Hanoi in April, “Sound of Noise” will come to HCMC this Saturday. In Swedish comedy Sound of Noise, police officer Amadeus Warnebring has suffered his whole life from an allergy to music in all its forms. His bizarre condition has resisted every medical investigation and remedy – even the slightest hint of a melody remains torture for Amadeus.
His existence is thrown into chaos when a gang of delinquent sonic terrorists, led by beautiful revolutionary genius Sanna, decides to enact a full-scale musical assault in the name of anarchy and freedom, using the city – its buildings, its machinery, its ceaseless noise – as their orchestra.
Their first piece is performed in hospital, on the anaesthesized body of a hateful TV star. Warnebring is called in, and thus begins a surreal investigation which will plunge our reluctant hero into the world he has spent his entire life fleeing… the world of music.
Inspired by their internationally acclaimed, multi award-winning short Music for one Apartment and six Drummers, Sound of Noise is the first feature from Swedish directors Simonsson & Nilsson.

Screening of “The Chronicle of a Summer”
Fri 18 May 2012, 6 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Doclab cordially invites you to the screening of “Chronicle of a Summer - Chronique d’un été” by two French filmmakers, Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin. Paris. The summer of 1960. While war rages in Algeria and pre-independence Congo seethes with violence, ethnographic filmmaker Jean Rouch and sociologist Edgar Morin send two women out into the streets of the city to interview passersby.
CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER is a true landmark in film history. Rouch and Morin were among the first filmmakers to use hand held sync sound 16mm equipment. They also coined the term cinéma vérité to describe their approach, although their practice, placing people in situations and provoking responses, differs from what later came to be called vérité films. Their use of the urban landscape and groundbreaking cinematography (cameraman Raoul Coutard was among the crew members working on the film) deeply affected the French New Wave and much of subsequent documentary practice. The film’s self-reflexive structure, in which Rouch and Morin screen the film for the participants to critique it on-screen, as well as their own reactions to the critique, is still, amazingly, contemporary.
More than 40 years later, CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER remains as ambitious, forward-looking and powerful as the day it was first released.
“I think the reason why CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER still works today, and is an important film, is that Rouch and Morin made a cinéma-vérité documentary which tries to include the truth of ‘fiction.’” - Ellen Freyer, Author of the essay Chronicle of a Summer – Ten Years After, in The Documentary Tradition by Lewis Jacob
“What this film engages is humanity itself.” - Roland Barthes
“The key cinema vérité film.” - Brian Winston, Claiming the Real
Languages: The film is in French with Vietnamese and English subtitles.

Latin American Film Festival in Hanoi
15 May – 05 Jun 2012
Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội
The Hanoi Cinematheque will host the first Latin American Film Festival starting on May 15th, 2012, aimed at showcasing and promoting Latin American filmmakers; celebrating the richness and diversity of Latin American cultures and experiences as well as fostering cross-cultural understanding and dialogue with Vietnamese audience.
The Embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela in Vietnam have worked together on this project to provide a space in Hanoi for Latin American images, sounds and stories, featuring films that portray the complexities and rhythms of everyday life in each country.
Two films will be presented every Tuesday from May 15th to June 5th, 2012, at 18:00 and 20:00 hrs. respectively. Each evening’s program will include a reception between both movies; attendants will enjoy traditional Latin American appetizers and drinks.
The festival opens on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 with “The Student” a film by Mexican director Roberto Girault, presenting a story in Guanajuato, Mexico about a man in his seventies who enrolls at a university to follow his long-deferred dream of studying literature. On the same evening, “Live Cuba” by Cuban director Juan Carlos Cremata will drive the audience into a tale similar to Romeo and Juliet, where the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ differences.
On Tuesday, May 22, 2012 “Noel: The Samba Poet” by Brazilian Ricardo Van Steen, will reveal the story of Noel Rosa, one of the best poets and composers whose first big success was a parody of the Brazilian national anthem. Chile will follow with the presentation of “The Gift”, a co-production by Cristián Galaz and Andrea Ugalde, a romantic comedy which mixes funny scenes with charming characters, in a journey that will be an unforgettable experience for a recently widowed and retired man who is going through difficult times.
The series continues on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 with “The Pope’s Toilet”, by Uruguayan César Charlone, a story inspired by a real-life 1988 tour of Pope John Paul II through South America, including a stop in Melo, Uruguay. On the same night, war and espionage will set the stage for a star-crossed romance in “Venezzia”, a historical drama from Venezuelan director Haik Gazarian.
“The Chance” on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 is a fun tropical comedy directed by Panamanian Abner Benaim, about employee-employer labor relations which lays a very funny subtle critique about the mistreatment that the domestic service suffers most of the time. The series concludes with the Argentinean “A Chinese Tale”, by Sebastian Borensztein, a movie about magic in life, rare events and destiny. A story of a Chinese immigrant lost inBuenos Aires, without knowing any Spanish at all. The rendez-vous between two cultures will come to show us the underlying connection of seemingly isolated events.
The Film Festival is open to the public and the entrance is free, except for May 15th, 2012; this date will be reserved for guests with invitations.
All films will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles and Vietnamese audio option. Please kindly bring your ID card to borrow headsets if necessary.

From British Council:
Cinema fans in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can enjoy a wide selection of recent films at the European Union Film Festival 2012 catering for audiences of all ages. The British Council is participating in the EU Film Festival 2012 with Charles Dickens‘ ‘Oliver Twist’ celebrating the bicentenary of one of the world’s most inspiring authors.
Set in 1848, Oliver Twist is the story of an orphan, born in a workhouse and brought up in harsh and cruel conditions, half-starved by the corrupt parish authorities. He later finds employment at an undertaker’s which he eventually escapes and makes his way to London where he falls in with the Artful Dodger, a boy of his own age, who introduces him to the villainous Fagin.
Director of British Council Vietnam Robin Rickard commented: “It’s a timeless story by a celebrated author who is more popular than ever and his impact on stage and screen has only been heightened by the recent bicentenary celebrations.
“We’re delighted to be able to bring the story to Vietnamese audiences who I am absolutely sure will enjoy it immensely just as international audiences have for generations.

Screening of “All Tomorrow’s Parties”
Wed 16 May 2012, 8.30 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
The Onion Cellar return to ATK with ATP, a documentary about the cult UK music festival, All Tomorrow’s Parties.
Named after a song by the legendary Velvet Underground (featuring Nico), All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) is an annual British non-corporate music festival, first held in 1999 in Camber Sands, England. Every year since, curators (often influential bands in the alternative scene) would be invited to handpick stellar line-ups of artists ranging across the more leftfield genres of music: noise rock, post-rock, avant-garde, psychedelic folk, underground hip hop etc. As founder Barry Hogan simply put, “ATP is like an excellent mix tape”.
Described as a “post-punk DIY bricolage”, ATP was made using footage generated by the fans and musicians attending the events themselves, on a multitude of formats including Super8, camcorder and mobile phone. Directed by Jonathan Caouette and “All Tomorrow’s People” (a term used to describe everyone who has contributed footage), cinematographed by La Blogothèque’s Vincent Moon (among others), edited by Nick Fenton (Heima’s editor), The film manages to faithfully portray all that makes ATP ATP – raw, rebellious, and ‘alternative’ in the truest sense of the word.
Rather than conventional concert footage, what we get is insights into the motivation and vibe of the festival. Why people organise such events, why people attend, why people perform, all starts to make perfect sense through the film’s kaleidoscopic lens. Performances from Belle and Sebastian, Sonic Youth, Battles, the Boredoms, Portishead, Mogwai, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Gossip, Iggy and the Stooges, Patti Smith (and much more) get equal billing among such random delights as fans climbing over cottages, Sun Ra explaining how he feels about music and, of course, the destination itself.
