About workshop:
Bui Ngoc Quan shares with the group a working method to find new movement and dance material that could be extremely physical, or quite simple. Form or concept are not so important for Quan. He familiarises the group with a cross of physical movement and dance, imaginary situations and recognize able circumstances that can awaken the body and sensations and that even can lead to unknown directions… Extreme? Awkward? Emotional? The workshop will certainly have a confrontational effect.

About workshop:
As well as the writers wrote with his pen, with choreographer the dancer’s body is a pen, the material for him to write up his thoughts, sharing and creativity. So Quach Phuong Hoang once again would like to give us the examination of our motion in a flexible, dynamic and none limited. Body, such a pen will write on the new movement with liberal and proactive way.

Meet the Artists Playing at Upcoming Grapevine Party!
Fri 09 Nov 2012, 6 pm
Hanoi Rock City
Hanoi Grapevine turns five and we are going to finally throw out an official party to celebrate our anniversary. First time in the last 5 years so make sure that you won’t miss it! Come to Hanoi Rock City this Friday night and you’ll see diversity! The most diverse music line-up that you may see this year in Hanoi. And it also reflects most of the music genres being played in the events posted on Grapevine so far.
1. Good Graeff – acoustic pop folk:
This twin sister duo is among the latest contributors to the Hanoi music scene and they have charmed the audience with their musical talent as well as their mystical twin-power. The two Florida girls formed the band in 2004 and has been writing original music since high school. They can play whatever instruments they could get their hands on including violin, guitar, bass, harmonica, ukulele, drums, mandolin, and cello.
If you haven’t got a chance to hear them play before, we promise you’ll adore them after this Friday night.
2. Zamina – African reggae:
Zamina – the true party makers who have taken Hanoi by storm in the last couple years! First known as The Only Reggae Band, the band has brought over African swinging beats with two Nigerians in the line up. If you haven’t heard about reggae before or know nothing about Afro music then this is definitely the chance for you.
As Hanoi Rock City used to say “When it comes to reggae music, there’s really only two options: either you like it, or you love it!” maybe you’ll find yourself fall in love with Zamina even before you notice.
3. Nu Voltage – nu metal & post rock:
Although all the five members are very young, the Hanoi rock band Nu Voltage has been around since 2007. The music style they are pursuing is a unique (even strange) combination of the two-very-different-genres, nu metal and post rock, and the thing is they are brilliant at both! The band won third prize in a reputable competition for rock bands in Vietnam, Tiger Translate – Battle of the bands 2012, and now is working hard to finish their debut album in the near future.
Watch their two videos below with the Linkin Park influenced nu metal and the experimental post rock then you will see why you don’t want to miss their performance this Friday night:
4. Hanoi Sessions – Rap Hip-Hop:
Remember these guys? Just 7 months ago they got a hit that went viral on Youtube and actually the hit was released when their rapper EP was still in the UK. Now he’s back to Hanoi and this Friday night we will be hearing him rapping live this famous track! So are you ready to mumble “Oi gioi oi” along with him?! Hanoi Sessions stand up let’s go! Everyone stand up let’s go!
And besides “Oi gioi oi” EP also wants to reveal his latest production at the party. Sounds exciting right? We are all looking forward to listening to what’s he got next! And while waiting for his next video to go viral on Youtube, let’s watch this famous “Oi gioi oi” again.
5. Dao Anh Khanh & Vu Nhat Tan – electronic, experimental music and performance:
Dao Anh Khanh and Vu Nhat Tan no doubt are two of the most famous names in the contemporary art scene of Hanoi and Vietnam, one on performance and the other on experimental electro music and sound art. If you have followed HanoiGrapevine for a while then you may see these two names popping up a lot of times, and if not then our suggestion is that you should try googling them and you’ll be amazed by the number of results showing up on your screen.
This Friday night they will be together giving out a set with Vu Nhat Tan on his electronic devices and Dao Anh Khanh on vocal and performance. Wonder what “contemporary art” is like? You’ll capture a part of it after this night!
6. Tri Minh & Sebastien Gesell – DJ:
Coming to our birthday party this Friday, Tri Minh and French artist Sebastien Gesell will be taking charge of the DJ sets downstairs. Again, if you follow Hanoi Grapevine then you may see that Tri Minh is a frequently mentioned name. He is also one of the leading musicians in the contemporary music scene in Hanoi and is the man behind the biggest annual festival for electronic and experimental music, Hanoi Sound Stuff.
Together with Tri Minh, we also welcome Sebastien Gesell, a bilingual French-Japanese sound artist who now calls Hanoi home. Taking the DJ sets downstairs they promise to bring the best festive atmosphere to our birthday party.
Watch a video of Tri Minh’s new album “Hanoi love story” here:
7. Dirty Fingrz – DJ:
Being one of the faces behind Hanoi Rock City and known for his on stage energy and love for the music, Dirty Fingrz thrives at the edge of the unexpected. His musical skills and tastes are as eclectic and versatile as the club he runs, spanning drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep, electro house, trip hop, glitch hop, grime, brit pop, indie dance / nu disco, 70s, punk, funk, 80s. He will be running the party both up and downstairs this Friday and guarantee to keep you swinging whole night.

Dan Henneberry and David Payne are familiar to most on the Hanoi music scene having played guitar in a myriad of popular bands around the capital. Now they’ve joined forces to create a free-form behemoth of improvisational pedal-based guitar explorations. Their recent appearances at ATK’s Experimental Music Nights won more than a few fans for managing to marry improvisation with a sense of melody and form. Joining them for the first time will be southern pop sensation Mai Khoi. Her voice and showmanship has made her ridiculously popular in her native Saigon where she sang the hits for big audiences.

Screening of “3 Women”
Thu 08 Nov 2012, 3 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Video Art Video cordially invites you to screening series called “Different Cinema” with 3 Women (124 min), a film by American director Robert Altman. The story came directly from a dream Altman had, which he did not fully understand, but nonetheless adapted into a treatment, intending to film without a script. 20th Century Fox financed the project based on Altman’s reputation, but a script was completed before filming, although, as with most Altman films, the script was just the beginning for what emerges during production.
The film depicts the increasingly bizarre, mysterious relationship between a woman (Duvall) and her room mate (Spacek) in a dusty, underpopulated Californian town. In a dusty, underpopulated California resort town, a naive southern waif, Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek), idolizes and befriends her fellow nurse, the would-be sophisticate and “thoroughly modern” Millie Lammoreaux (Shelley Duvall). When Millie takes Pinky in as her roommate, Pinky’s hero worship evolves into something far stranger and more sinister than either could have anticipated. Featuring brilliant performances from Spacek and Duvall, this dreamlike masterpiece from Robert Altman careens from the humorous to the chilling to the surreal, resulting in one of the most unusual and compelling films of the 1970s.
The film is in English with English subtitle.
The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.

Comic Art – City Tales Blog Project
Goethe Institut VietnamCity Tales Blog
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
So you think comics are only for collectors and superhero fans? Not the City Tales blog of the Goethe-Institut. Over the course of 12 months, beginning in May 2012, comic artists from eight countries have the opportunity to create stories about their cities. The artists, from Hamburg, Berlin, Bangkok, Melbourne, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi, send their characters on a journey through their respective cities.
Each month, a new theme is provided by the Goethe-Institut. The result is a varied collection of stories, each revealing typical characteristics of their country. While Vietnamese artist Nguyen Thanh Phong uses the topic “Ramadan, Idul Fitri, Festivals” to explore the real meaning of the traditional mid-autumn festival in Hanoi, the Malaysian artist has his protagonist Jambu, the street cat, experience Ramadan in Kuala Lumpur. Even fans who think they know everything about soccer can discover whole new aspects of the sport: for example, what “rat goal” means in Bangkok, to what extent soccer dictates daily life in Indonesia, or what it’s like to be an anti-soccer fan in Germany. Even daily topics like food and traffic are cast in a new light and presented in entertaining stories: the Australian artist Mandy Ord compares the sound of Niagara Falls with traffic noise in Melbourne, and Lyndon Gregorio from the Philippines illustrates local meals, organised according to the time of day.
In the next few months the artists will send their characters through the streets of their cities to explore such topics as “Music in Clubs and Streets” and “Fashion, Chic and Style”.
The young comic artist Nguyen Thanh Phong sketches the modern Vietnam in his comic strips and illustrates how traditional cultural values can be combined with a modern lifestyle. For example in his most recent comic strip, he turns an apocalyptic vision of the end of the world into a report about the traditional Vietnamese soup phở.
The comics genre he enjoys the most is experimental comics such as narrative portrait and autobiography. And he also has a great passion for historical Vietnamese comics.
The City Tales Blog offers an exceptional insight into the art of the comic strip in different cultures and entertains with interesting urban stories.

HCMC – Exhibition “Houses Facing the Street”
Opening: Sat 10 Nov, 6 pm
Exhibition: 11 Nov – 10 Dec 2012, 9 am – 6 pm
Artist talk: Tue 13 Nov, 6 pm
Cactus Contemporary Art
17/12 Nguyen Huy Tuong Street, Ward 6, Binh Thanh District, HCMC
Goethe Institute is proud to present Nguyen The Son’s artwork with an exhibition “Houses Facing the Street – Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City” from november 10th – december 10th in Gallery Cactus, HCMC.
The exhibition focuses on an aspect of the development of the two cities in modern day Vietnam: a rapid change which has spread without having been noticed marked by huge billboards that cover entire house fronts and compete for the viewer’s attention with their bright colors. Thus the colorful advertisement is dominating the picture of many streets and it remains the only thing the human eye captures by passing by. Old residential buildings or even more modern ones, which have long shaped the face of the cities, are changing: Instead of windows and balconies which facilitate the communication between neighbors, tall billboards seal the houses off, both towards the street, the outside, as well as the inside. What remains is a lightless living space behind the façade losing in value as well as a city with a changed face.
Nguyen The Son seizes upon the issue of these billboards and, by digital means, makes it into entire streets. Using a unique printing technique on Xuan paper and silk, the artist manages to intertwine both old and new techniques in an appealing union. Furthermore, the exhibition features photographic installations which play with the beholder’s perception and blur the line between reality and fiction.
This extraordinary exhibition by Nguyen The Son which focused on Hanoi and was shown in March at the Goethe Institute Hanoi, comes now enlarged with a new series of pictures from Ho Chi Minh City. Nguyen The Son, who has already focused his attention on other phenomenons of big cities urban landscape in earlier works, invites the visitor to compare both cities by means of his pictures and to discover differences with its own eyes.
Nguyen The Son was born in 1978. He graduated from the Vietnam Academy of Fine Arts in 2002, where he then filled a teacher’s position from 2002 until 2008. In 2008, he began the pursuit of his Master’s degree in Fine Art Photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Apart from his solo exhibitions “Headwash”(2005), “High Above” (2007) and “New higher Level” (2009), Nguyen The Son’s work has been shown in numerous group exhibitions in Vietnam and China from 2000 until today.

Our young audience will explore that water can be a life giver and a source of energy. They will experience how they can stop the pollution and wastage of drinkable water and learn why the overfishing of the ocean causes a huge threat.

Homosexuality is no longer considered a big taboo in today’s world: people have heard a lot of it, have almost come to accept it. Many can easily say they are homosexual, or have homosexual friends. However, there still exists a large barrier, when the notion of homosexuality is still limited to define what homosexuality is and howdifferent it is… Starting from the own curiosity, the own confusion and the own motivation, as well as the insights into homosexuals’ lives that Maika herself had a chance to witness, she wholeheartedly carried out this project: a photography document about homosexual couples’ daily activities and their private moments (called THE PINK CHOICE).
Maika focuses on living spaces, the affectionate touches, and more importantly, the synchronized rhythm of lovers sharing life together. Viewers may not see much of personalities of the people in the photos but they can feel the warmth of love and caring. In another way, in this project, she wants to show what she saw from homosexual people and not to show how homosexual people see themselves.
Love is beautiful, and we can only claim ourselves supportive of homosexuality when we accept their love – and see it beautiful as it naturally is!
The artist Maika Elan full-name is actually Nguyen Thanh Hai and was born in 1986 in Hanoi. 2008 she graduated from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, since then she is working as a freelance photographer. Regularly, she participates with her works in photography workshops and festivals in Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand and Bangladesh und won several prices. In September 2012 her pictures were shown at a festival in Europe, the World Event Young Artist Festival in Nottingham (UK).

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam shares the delight of hosting Japanese Film Festival: Comedy 2012 from 25 October – 1 December 2012 in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Phan Thiet City.
Japanese, businessmen in particular, are believed in overseas to be very serious and relatively weak in telling witty jokes to foreigners. In an extreme case, some even believe Japanese look like Noh masks with never showing any emotional expressions on faces. But of course, we tell jokes to each other, laughing at comical dramas on TV, on stage, and on film. In short, our senses of humors are packed and enriched in various cultural products including films.
In this year’s Japanese Film Festival, we introduce the diversity of comedy in hope to share our laughs and smiles with Vietnamese audience. 8 popular and smash-hit films all made in 2000s are carefully selected to showcase the variety of comical senses in Japanese film.

HCMC – Exhibition “Voracious Embrace: The Human/Animal Interface”
Opening: Thu 01 Nov 2012, 5 pm
HCMC Fine Arts Museum
97 Pho Duc Chinh, Dist 1, HCMC
‘Voracious Embrace: The human/animal interface’ explores the hidden, perhaps overlooked encounters, between the human and animal world. Over the last nine months, Lena Bui has been working with the scientists of the Centre for Tropical Medicine in Ho Chi Minh City, as an ‘artist-in-residence’, meeting with its scientists to learn more of their research and methods of working, including the dilemmas they face in the world of crisis ‘control and prevention’. Particularly fascinated by zoonosis and the inexplicable distance between the consummation of animal parts and the conditions they are bred, executed and packaged, Bui traveled to rural farming areas in Soc Trang ands Dak O with scientists and returned to the studio compelled by what she witnessed. Drawings of pink flesh – the typical meat morsel found in wet markets across Vietnam – became a recurring motif on the studio wall coupled with the chaotic patterning of the microscopic world where the invisible, yet lethal, universe of bacteria rage their battle for existence. What was particularly intriguing for Bui was the farmer’s intimacy with their animals and the lack of fear towards interacting with blood, raw flesh, feathers, skin and bones, under conditions most urban dwellers would consider unhygienic. Bui was struck by the integral presence of traditional farming practices that continue quiet, yet highly effective ways, giving evidence of a natural relation between the growth of the crop, the herding of animals and their consummation. Documenting her fieldwork through video, photography, sound and sketch, Bui was determined to experiment with differing media, desiring a weight and viscerality that reflected the reality of what she had witnessed. Here was a world seemingly unaffected by the scientific knowledge of the microscopic potential dangers inherent to living with animals in such close proximity – an existence that ironically forms the backbone of a crucial part of the human food chain in Vietnam today.
‘‘Voracious Embrace: The human/animal interface’ is part of an international project titled ‘Art in Global Health’, initiated by Wellcome Collection and curated by Danielle Olsen. Establishing 6 artist residencies – in the UK, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam – ‘Art in Global Health’ seeks to engage artists and scientists, through sharing of research techniques and methods of enquiry, to question or re-frame the relevance of their work, building a comparative impression of global health research, both in terms of the process of research itself and its place in local and global society.
Lena Bui’s ‘artist-in-residence’ is co-organized in Ho Chi Minh City by the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, a Wellcome Trust supported research centre and Sàn Art, Vietnam’s most active independent, non-profit contemporary art space and reading room; with exhibition hosted by the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum showcasing new works realized as a result of this unique collaboration.
