“KÍ” Workshop

Fri 30 Nov 2012, 6 pm
La 4uatrieme
4th floor, 95, Giang Văn Minh, Ba Đình, Hà Nội

” KÍ ” workshop (or sketch workshop) is a project for a group of young artists to share and work in a very basic way of doing art: sketching. This workshop is the combination of rough ideas for an installation, a painting, a photography/film project, land art, poetry or an art work in general. The artists in the group have been working together in team or individual for 1 month, since October 2012. The project includes art talk about team work, group discussion, outdoor activities, and the show of the group’s work in the one month.

Normally at art exhibition, people see completed art work but they rarely see the sketch of it or the very early stage of the idea. Sometimes, it is the idea, the sketch which tells a lot about the work and the thought and feelings of an artists. With this in mind, the ” KÍ ” group wants to show their sketches as real art work and share with the viewers how an idea is formed and developed.

A Night at the Opera – La Traviata

Fri 30 Nov 2012, 7.30 pm
Hanoi Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

The Hanoi Opera Guild continues our monthly screening of an opera in cooperation with Hanoi Cinematheque, taking advantage of their intimate venue with exquisite audio and video equipment. The next screening will be Friday November 30th, and we will screen a unique production of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata.

Composed in 1853, La Traviata has been in the standard repertory since shortly after its premiere and is the most frequently performed Italian language opera. One opera historian suggested that La Traviata has been performed somewhere in the world every day for more than 100 years.

The opera is based on a play that is based on an Alexandre Dumas story “La Dame aux camélias”, which in turn is based on Marie Duplessis, the real-life lover of Dumas. The drama centers on a young man from a respectable family who falls for a young courtesan. The young man’s father intercedes for the dignity and reputation of the family resulting in
misunderstandings and mistakes made by all characters involved.

For those on the Cinematheque mailing list, make a reservation as usual. A limited number of free tickets are also available through the Opera Guild, send an email to info@hanoioperaguild.com, tel 04.39362648

Screening of Music Documentary “Backyard”

Wed 28 Nov 2012, 8 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

We are very proud to present the official Vietnam premiere of BACKYARD – a music documentary about a bunch of Icelandic hips.., err, artists, having fun playing music in a backyard and on a roof!

BACKYARD – The Movie is a realisation and celebration of Reykjavík’s creative spirit. It is the embodiment of what happens when a group of friends works hard at implementing and executing an idea, and it is simply because they’re having fun! It is pure joy on celluloid, and you should join this party, which features performances by Múm, FM Belfast, Sin Fang, Hjaltalín, Retro Stefson, Borko & Reykjavík! Most of them are internationally known due to their releases on Morr Music and Kimi Records.

This is what happened: After he had successfully organized a concert (featuring eight bands in twelve hours), Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson (of FM Belfast fame) found himself pretty amazed by the energy and velocity of his local scene. He thought: “I should throw a party like this in my own backyard. So he invited all his friends and favourite local bands to play a show in his small backyard over the course of a couple of days. And he also invited filmmaker Árni Sveinsson who captured everything that happened with BACKYARD.

The bands don’t sound anything alike – they are all doing their own thing. What they share is a friendship, a mentality and approach that surpasses any superficial differences. This is not so much what you would call a ‘scene’. It’s a group of friends (who in their spare time play football or go swimming together): take Borko kicking off the movie with his lo-fi majesty against Hjaltalín‘s intricate baroque; múm‘s delicate patchwork against Reykjavík!‘s drunken artwork or FM Belfast‘s ungovernable will to party (which marks the finale grande here). It’s all there, and it works together because the shared idea is not a sound, but a feeling. This feeling is perfectly captured in Backyard.

The screening features a return performance from local favourite Phuong Dang, whose beautiful crooning Beth Gibbons-ish voice and baroque pop songs played on piano surely you will fall in love with. This is her first live appearance after a long hiatus due to becoming a mother. Not to be missed.

Screening of Documentary “Mekong”

Goethe Institut VietnamDocumentary Mekong
Thu 29 Nov 2012, 9 – 11 am
University of Science – Vietnam National University
-
Fri 30 Nov 2012, 9 – 11 am
Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hall C2

In the context of Science Film Festival 2012 Goethe-Institut in cooperation with IUCN and CPWF presents the screening of the film Mekong (52 Min) of director Douglas Varchol with discussion at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology and at the National University Hanoi.

The film deals with the Mekong Region, which is a massive ecosystem that is the lifeline for more than 60 million people across six countries: Cambodia, China, Laos, Burma/Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. For the people in the Lower Mekong Basin, it provides more fish to more people than any other river in the world. With an estimated commercial value exceeding US$2 billion per year, it is the world’s most valuable inland fishery.

At the same time, more than 140 dams are currently planned, under construction or commissioned for different rivers in the basin. If constructed, this will radically alter the basin’s hydrology, its ecology and, consequently, the lives of millions who depend upon it. The question is how can these seemingly opposite demands be met: sustainable development of a region and the rising demands for energy and economic growth?

Mekong is a one-hour documentary on the Mekong River, examining the issues of hydropower development and its impact on Mekong citizen’s lives.

The film was shot in four countries and four languages and features stories of Mekong Citizen’s up and down the river, from fishers on the Tonle Sap, activists still fighting at the Pak Mun dam in Thailand, to a vice minister from Laos convinced he can build the region’s most “river-transparent” dam.

Noi Hanoi: Four Poets, Two Languages

Sun 25 Nov 2012, 8 pm
Tadioto
12 Truong Han Sieu, Hanoi

Please join us for the latest chapter of Noi Hanoi, an evening of spoken word in Vietnamese and English. This month’s reading will be slightly different from previous Noi Hanoi events. We’ll be focusing on the work of just four poets: Vietnamese writers Thuy Hang and Nha Thuyen, plus American writers Jacob Evans and Claire Barnard. Prior to the event, the four poets met to talk about each other’s work. What they will present may not be conventional translations, but will illustrate one of the many ways that poetry can be in dialogue across language and culture. The readings will be followed by a question-and-answer session plus and an open mic. Come have a drink, enjoy some poetry, and enter the tangled messy web that is translation.

European Music Festival 2012

European Music Festival 2012: 22 Nov – 02 Dec 2012, 8 pm
Youth Theatre, Hanoi
HCMC Conservatory of Music, HCMC

Over the past ten years, the European Music Festival in Vietnam has introduced a remarkably diverse line-up of concerts to its stage in November in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Bringing together musical talents from the European Union, the European Music Festival aims at reaching a diversified audience with a varied repertoire to celebrate the richness of European culture. This year, the Festival once again invites artists and audiences of all ages to experience music in established and conventional settings, exploring the combination of classic and contemporary rhythms.

Over more than past 20 years, relations between the European Union (EU) and Vietnam have developed vigorously. Relations extend far beyond commercial, investment and development ties. The two sides continue to strengthen linkages and build bridges between the peoples of the European Union and the Vietnamese people, across the board

Cultural exchanges and public diplomacy activities are an important part of these efforts. Events such as the present European Music Festival showcase the European Union’s strength, its “unity in diversity” and, more generally, the richness of European culture, contributing to better understanding and reciprocal knowledge, thus reinforcing relations between Europe and Vietnam.

This year’s Festival will feature musicians from Wallonia-Brussels (Belgium), Germany, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, embracing classical music, jazz, and pop.

The Festival will be opened in Hanoi on 22 November with a performance by the German pianists, Duo d’Accord. The Duo premiered their performance in Vietnam, at the Europe Day Concert in 2011, which was highly acclaimed by Vietnamese spectators. The two pianists Lucia Huang and Sebastian Euler from Duo d’Accord play virtuoso works for two pianos as passionately as compositions for piano, four hands can be. In addition to their own arrangements, the duo performs works composed specifically for them and remarkable revivals of classic pieces.

For fans of classical music, two piano concerts by Hungarian pianist György Oravecz and Polish pianist Karol Radziwonowicz respectively will no doubt captivate their musical soul with remarkable compositions.

Hungarian pianist György Oravecz, started his piano studies at the age of eight. He graduated from the Franz Liszt Music Academy, where he studied under professors István Lantos and Zoltán Kocsis.  He was prize winner of the Hungarian Radio Piano Competition in 1985 as well as being awarded the Cziffra Prize connected with a scholarship, while Polish pianist Karol Radziwonowicz – a pianist educated in Poland and the USA, with years of performing experience in various musical centers throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Asia. After graduation from The Fryderyk Chopin National Music Academy in Warsaw with the highest honors, Radziwonowicz has won prizes at a number of important competitions, as well as the American Scholarship Fulbright Competition.

The Festival continues with performances by musicians of Manuel Hermia Trio from Wallonia Brussels and the British band Empirical that will take audiences into sophisticated jazz melodies with great passion.
Manuel Hermia Trio from Wallonia Brussels

Trio Manuel Hermia will take audiences into a jazzy world rooted in the tradition and at the same time open to all influences, music both modern and risk-loving, but still accessible. In the meanwhile, the unique music by Empirical manages to be both timeless and totally. In just a few short years they have carved out a place as one of jazz’s most exciting young bands and they have won numerous awards including the 2010 MOBO for best jazz act and Jazzwise and Mojo albums of the year.

The band from the Netherlands Yori Swart will present Yori Swart, who has won Holland’s most important prize for singer/songwriters.
The Netherlands Yori Swart

The Festival will be closed on 2 December with a performance by the Swedish artist Emma Tranströmer. The mezzo soprano Ms Emma Tranströmer is the daughter of the Swedish Nobel Laureate for Literature Mr Tomas Tranströmer. She performs musical interpretations of her father’s acclaimed poetry putting each strophe in focus.

H.E.Mr Franz Jessen, Ambassador – Head of the Delegation of the European Union said, “The event is an annual celebration of music excellence that makes the joy of music accessible to all. Whether your primary interest is in serious contemporary music, world music, jazz, international cultural development or just enjoying fantastic entertainment, the European Music Festival offers unforgettable concerts to connect with.”

Maika focuses on living spaces, the affectionate touches, and more importantly, the synchronized rhythm of lovers sharing life together. Viewers may not see much of personalities of the people in the photos but they can feel the warmth of love and caring. In another way, in this project, she wants to show what she saw from homosexual people and not to show how homosexual people see themselves.

Held in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro since 2004, the IB! has won twice one of the most traditional national awards in the creative industry, the HQ Mix Awards, in the category “Best Event”.

This international version of the IB! consists of an exhibition of artwork by 100 of the finest Brazilian editorial and advertising illustrators, comic book artists and animators, complemented by a series of lectures and workshops

The exhibition will take place in Hanoi from the 22nd to 29th of November at the Vietnamese Women’s Museum , and the lectures and workshops will feature Brazilian Illustrator Rogerio Soud.

The most well known aspects of Brazil are displayed in the exhibition, such as its striking nature and wildlife, its sports stars and references to its lively music. It’s an opportunity to see soccer stars such as Ronaldinho, Kaká and 1950s Dino Santos portrayed in different styles by painters, digital artists and caricaturists. Discover the many scenarios the continental country has, from the Amazon Forest and the Northeast countryside to the paradise-like beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, and famous cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, São Paulo, Recife and Curitiba, drawn as cartoons, advertisements, comics, realistic paintings and carvings. Find out more about the myths, legends and folkloric characters known to Brazilian people as the legend of Saint Gióng is to the Vietnamese.

His research interests now include the development of systems that provide sound and music for non-linear contexts as well as the design processes.

The design researchers Dr. Richard van Tol and Dr. Sander Huiberts will organize a “Game Jam”. The goal is to come together and make a video game and music for this game, or non-digital game like a board game or card game. Screening of Documentary Film “Transnational Team”

Goethe Institut VietnamTransnational Team
Fri 16 Nov 2012, 6.30 pm
Goethe Institut Vietnam
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội

The Goethe-Institute invites you to the documentaryTransnationalmannschaft including a lecture by Dr. Rolf Husmann, anthropologist with a specialisation in ethnographic filmmaking at the University in Göttingen and Co-Director of the International Ethnigraphic Film Festival in Göttingen. Afterwards there is the opportunity to ask questions to Dr. Husmann and discuss about the film.

Seven protagonists portray their personal perception of the tournament, their cultural origin being as many-faceted as that of the German national team: Of the 23 players on the German World Cup team in South Africa, eleven could have opted to play for other nations earlier in their careers. They are all German, their parents are not – the analytical concept of transnationalism locates their identity in two nations.

The film provides insight into a part of town with a migrant population of over 60% and documents the relationship of its protagonists towards the German national team. The film asks what terms likehome, native country and nation mean to them and gives viewers a chance to see Germany, its society and this specific community through the eyes of these modern-day locals.

Transnationalmannschaft thus outlines the identity of a multiethnic neighborhood in a large German city, leaving the sovereignty of interpretation to its protagonists. Socially relevant and highly urgent issues such as whether you can have two home countries or what it actually means to be German are brought into focus via the emotional detour of national teams and the Football World Cup.

Transnationalmannschaft is a Heimatfilm that investigates 21st century social reality in German and European cities and last but not least celebrates football as a passion beyond all ethnic boundaries.

Free admission.

Exhibition “Frontier Area”

Opening: Sat 17 Nov, 5 pm
Exhibition: 17 – 25 Nov 2012
Nguyen Art Gallery
No 31 Van Mieu road, Hanoi

Come to the “FRONTIER AREA” painting exhibition by the painter Mai Huy Dzung. The artist said “I am a giddy person. When I feel tired of the whirl of modern life, I take my backpack to escape away, sometimes with friends, sometimes by myself.

It is not too difficult to imagine how the mountains in Northern area enchanted me, from the harsh but spectacular nature to simple but warm-hearted people. I don’t know when it starts but just seeing the sign at the border area “Frontier area”, I always feel very excited.

I absolutely admired people who are living here. Although their lives are so hard, people are full of vigor. I miss the eyes, the smiles, the sweats rolling on their faces in the freezing winter morning. I miss the bowls of corn wine, “mèn mén” (Specialty from the hill tribes’ made of corn),” thắng cố” (the dish of horses’ intestine, liver, kidney…in a big pan and server right in the market) and the simple foods when I go to the hill tribe market. Markets in mountainous area where everyone are friends, people don’t glare at each other like in Hanoi pubs, where you can drink wine in bowls and shoulder by  shoulder to others, where the affection between people become a specialty, where … never told to the end. I would be an ungrateful person if I didn’t paint them. They are my special friends, my loves; those gave me food to eat, places to live, and inspired me a lot.

I have wondered should I be sad or happy when seeing the hardship lives but full of loves and humanity. I still have not found the answer yet. Until now the portraits I painted are still bittersweet, strips of brightly fresh color but still burnished austerity. I am not ashamed of confusion, because it is my true feeling. If someone asked whether my paintings transfer a great idea, whether it contains any message or not, I would answer: No, my paintings only have sincerity.”
