Exhibition Showcase ‘New Form II: Sculpture – Architecture – Space’

Artists: Nguyen Ngoc Lam, Le Lang Luong, Pham Bao Son, Tran Trong Tri, Pham Dam Ca

Curator: Nguyen Anh Tuan

Module 7 and New Form sculpture group cordially invite you to the showcase of the experimental sculpture works called ‘New Form II: Sculpture – Architecture – Space’. The exhibition is an activity in the project New Form phase II, 2014 – 2015.

NEW FORM, a contemporary sculpture project, aims to study and experiment new creative possibilities in sculpture as well as bring sculpture closer to the modern living space. The group was founded by sculptors living and working in Hanoi. New Form project was developed and operated in the time frame of three years in three phases. Each phase has its own strategy and orientation.

In the phase I of the project in 2013, the members conducted research and experiments for new innovative ways to create works, such as: the study of the language of the shapes, changing the forms of the sculptures, leading sculpture to organize and control the exhibition space, combining lights into the artwork structure as well as the experimentation of materials. The members of the project can pursue in one and more than these directions mentioned above. This direction combined with the own distinctive art style or transformed into a totally new way of expression. These experimental strategies were introduced in New Form 1 at Vietnam Sculpture Gallery, 12 Quan Su, Hanoi early November 2013.

The second phase in 2014, New Form aims to connect the sculpture works into the everyday life architectural space. In Manzi during October 2014, we displayed the works of artists Pham Thai Binh, Thai Nhat Minh, Khong Do Tuyen and Hoang Mai Thiep. This show tries to implement the experimental ideas in the art space in combination with the bar, café as well as other performance events. The second exhibition in Module 7 – in an interior design and fashion space – contains the works of artists Nguyen Ngoc Lam, Le Lang Luong, Pham Bao Son va Tran Trong Tri. With the criteria of the second phase on the space element of the works and creates an dialog with the actual space, the experimental sculpture works of New Form don’t just meet challenges from the internal change inside the nature of sculpture but also seek to get connected with the space. The space has the determined shades, functions and life, which lies in different contexts and quite distinctive from a pure art space.

One of the earliest members of New Form, this is the first time Nguyen Ngoc Lam showcases his works in the project exhibition. From the idea expressing the relations between nature and man-made objects, which the artist has been pursued for recent years, Lam seems to be not trying to refresh this time but more focus on the reality of sculpture with its surrounding context. A natural tree with a sexy shape for decorative display, Nguyen Ngoc Lam put into it stainless cubes. This was then put inside the space of Module 7, the artist wants to find the connection between sculpture and modern furniture: this lies in the contrast between the natural and artificial form of the artwork, as well as the exoticism of the artwork within this unique aesthetic space.

Continue to work on the idea “Landscape sculpture”, Le Lang Luong has significant changes in the structure and display plan of the work. In New Form 1, Luong showed the works as combination of the solid and the hollow pieces. There’s the softness of the paper and the flatness, coldness but sexiness of the metal cast. The displaying of the works both in the wall and in the ground seems to find the reflection or connection between two contrast pieces in the same work. In New Form II, the artist wants to strengthen the “conceptualization” of the sculpture by combining the real shapes and its shadow on the wall. The appearance of two types of entities and the silhouettes of the sculpture in the structure of an artwork in conjunction with the installation, the natural space and the surrounding space, this shows that the artist has gone further in the study of experimental research that requires more multi-dimensional awareness. This also gives the viewers more options to enjoy the artwork: from the outside, go inside, among the real work and its shadow on the wall, the borderlines between reality and concepts in life.

One of the artists pursuing experimental expression in the project, Pham Bao Son has presented works with the high changes in shapes, materials as well as the displaying. In New Form 1, Son expressed the idea of wind-rain-water, unshaped things by sculpture in combination with glass, wood, iron and LED lights. The artwork certainly has the inspiration from architecture and design as well as the boldness in implementing a new sculpture language. In this exhibition, the artist uses the old material and language to experiment a sculpture developed in the vertical axis with strong interaction with the architecture. The piece is a cylindrical square from the floor to the ceiling, which is made of glass, stainless steel and lights. The idea of the dialog with the architecture isn’t just in the sculpture language but there’s connection between the interior columns as well as the communication between the objects and the design spirit of this space.

Before taking part in New Form, Tran Trong Tri has always followed the new ways of expression both in forms and installation of experimental sculptures. This shows that the artist’s creative thinking as well as his flexibility in creating new works. Participating in New Form 1, the artist implemented a site specific piece, which was a 12 meter-high steel cylinder under the narrow space of tube house stairs – a pretty typical architectural style of urban Hanoi, with egg-shapes glowing sticking around. In New Form 2, there’s a total new experimental direction between sculpture and architecture. A boat-shaped object was placed in the exhibition space as a work of art. From here, the artist wants to pose questions on the meaning of an art work: does it lie in the conscious mind of an artist, during the art making process, in the location and display, or inside the mind of the audience that stands in front of the work and interacts with it. (Where they can lie or sit on the work)

The presence of designer Pham Dam Ca brings new graphical solution for the show. Besides the objective of identifying the exhibition, the artworks, guideline and sending the message, the design implement a new creative way visually with the major theme of using the lines and combining the solid and empty blocks. From the shapes identified in phase 1, this graphic compilation continuously changes in towards many variations (the combination of the solid and empty arrays as well as lines) and recombinant (distributed and arranged in different order). The parallel of the graphic language and sculpture combining the auxiliary functions of the work and its distinctive expressive possibility makes the graphic works become an independent creative idea as a work of art.

The showcase of sculpture in real life space is a changing step in New Form 2 project. If in phase 1, the artists can only experiment in certain ways and there are still limitations in the gallery space, which is considered to be more or less favourable. In phase 2, putting the sculpture in an actual space creates more challenges for the artists in handling and controlling the works with the complexity of the exhibition space and its everyday function, which includes the environment, lighting and audience engagement. Therefore the experimental elements requires more complex observation, the advantages and limitations appeared is needed for such a project. But the effort towards linking the arts with the living space is something valuable.

Formed by a group of sculptors living and working in Hanoi, New Form project was established with the desire to seek, research and experiment new creative possibilities of sculpture and connecting arts with the current living conditions and contexts.

Started in 2013, New Form project first aimed towards the experiments in sculpture in the changing of forms and artwork content. In the next phases, New Form aims towards bringing these sculpture experiments connecting to living spaces and its everyday life so that it can find the possibilities to bring arts closer to human beings. New Form also tries to generate an experimental space for new creative faces of sculpture and visual arts in Vietnam.

Special Film Screening “Why is Yellow the Middle of the Rainbow?” and “Far from Vietnam”

Sat 15 Nov 2014, 3 pm

Salon Van hoa Ca phe Thu Bay

1st Floor, Trung Nguyen Coffee, 19B Pham Ngoc Thach, Dist 3, HCMC

This special screening will showcase two films by cinema greats of the ‘Third Cinema Movement’ a movement that began in Latin America in the 1960s/70s denouncing neocolonialism, the capitalist system and the Hollywood model of producing cinema for mere entertainment. Both Tahimik and Marker are considered pioneers of essay filmmaking – a film genre that takes the style of the documentary with oral commentary and composed with the signature style of the auteur. It often blends fiction and experimental narratives. These films, which do not separate political content from aesthetic enquiry, demonstrate an aesthetic in which editing is considered a political act.

PROGRAM

3pm:

‘Why is Yellow the Middle of the Rainbow’ (174mins)

Kidlat Tahimik (Philippines)

Tahimik’s virtually unknown masterpiece chronicles Tahimik and his young son’s lives as they traverse the tumultuous 1980s and early 1990s in the Philippines—a great democratic revolution deposes a dictator; a massive volcanic eruption covers the world in ash—and asks how one might build a new and better future out of the disasters.

* Language: English with Vietnamese subtitle

7pm:

‘Far from Vietnam’ (115mins)

Chris Marker (France)

This epic 1967 collaboration between cinema greats Chris Marker, Jean-Luc Godard, Joris Ivens, William Klein, Claude Lelouch and Alain Resnais was made in protest of American military involvement in Vietnam “to affirm, by the exercise of their craft, their solidarity with the Vietnamese people in struggle against aggression (Marker).” The film includes documentary footage; a fictional vignette and a monologue that dramatize the self-interrogation of European intellectuals; including interviews with Fidel Castro and Anne Morrison amongst others.

Exhibition “Colourful Beliefs”

Exhibition: 15 Nov – 15 Dec 2014, 9 am – 6.30 pm

Dong Phong Art Gallery

03 Ly Dao Thanh Street

Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Open everyday from 9.30 am to 6 pm

On the occassion of the upcoming Christmas season, Dong Phong Art Gallery is pleased to introduce a new exhibition called “Colourful Beliefs” which is featuring an interesting co-ordination between the talented Ly Hung Anh’s paintings and well-established Vuong Thao’s living fossils with a new nuance.

These are Ly Hung Anh’s impressions and feelings when he created and chose paintings for this Show: “Belief should be a huge or a tiny issue, shouldn’t it? What does the innocent believe in? Do we see that charm or beauty ? Does creativeness go along with belief? I want to be the innocent guy with a small belief even if I have only one day with it. I follow simple things and find my own belief in them!”. the paintings at the show have expressed his belief: gentle, innocent, simple, no grand declaration…

Meanwhile, Vuong Thao’s transparent fossils are rough and cracked, but reflect the glittering lights in many directions like an aureola which makes the statues inside of the fossil cubes looked like they are floating in the air. All fossilized “Uncle Teu” or “Buddha” statues have portrayed larger beliefs. Do these beliefs portray wisdom or stupidity (or naivety)?!

Please come to the Exhibition “Colourful Beliefs” from 15 Nov. to 15 Dec at #3 Ly Dao Thanh street and enjoy these beautiful pieces and find your own true answers.

A Night at the Opera – La Bohème

Sun 16 Nov 2014, 7 pm

Hanoi Cinematheque

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Come to the screening of a classic version of La Bohème by the composer Giacomo Puccini.

La Bohème premiered in 1896 in Turin, and has been in the opera repertory since its premiere. It is the most popular Puccini opera, and one of the most popular operas overall. It is based on the 1851 novel by Henri Murger, La Vie de Bohème. The libretto of the opera was freely adapted from the novel, combining comic elements of the impoverished life of the young protagonists with the tragic aspects, and romance is woven throughout the story.

Puccini’s own life as young man in Milan served as a source of inspiration for elements of the libretto. During his years as a conservatory student he experienced poverty similar to that of the bohemians in La Bohème, including chronic shortage of necessities like food, clothing and money to pay rent.

This opera is considered by many to be the ideal introduction to opera for students and beginners to the art form.

Language: The opera will be screened in the original Italian with English subtitles.

For those with membership at the Cinémathèque, make a reservation as usual by phoning the Cinémathèque, daily between 14:00 – 21:00 at 3936-2648. A limited number of tickets are also available through the Opera Guild, send an email to info@hanoioperaguild.com. A donation of VND 60,000 is suggested.

Exhibition “Journey to a Green Vietnam”

Opening: Mon 10 Nov 2014, 6.30 pm

Exhibition: 10 – 16 Nov 2014

Viet Nam University of Fine Arts

42 Yết Kiêu, Hà Nội

You are invited to the installation exhibition titled “Journey to a Green Vietnam”, a collaborated project between curator Tran Luong and talented artists: Nguyen The Son, Phan Thao Nguyen, Luong Hue Trinh, Truong Cong Tung, Tran Tuan.

Among the most emblematic artworks is “8m2″ by artist Nguyen The Son. This synthetic artwork simulates the 8m2 living space of workers in Southern industrial zones resulted from his journey to industrial zones.

Artist Nguyen Son states:

“From the curiosity to experience a life different from one in a colorful prosperous city, I have joined a research group of the project ” Journey to a green Vietnam ” to visit an industrialized zone in the Southern part of the country in order to live a life like many farmers who left their rice fields to come to the big city, chasing their dreams for a better future. Thousands of individual lives with hundreds of reasons to leave their home villages have gathered here sharing life together in these tiny living spaces only a few meters square next to the industrialized zone, constantly working day and night without resting. These industrialized zones are considered to be the locomotive of the train in the campaign ” industrializing, modernizing” the country which has been working for 20 years since the Doi Moi ( New change policy) . These people – the ” workers” have lived a life that doesn’t belong to them. Witnessing the struggle of their daily living condition, being trapped in a tiny room of 8 m2, I truly understand the life of these people whose days and nights directly participated in the campaign of ” industrializing” the country. What can they gain from this trade off they have made? With my “8m2 square” photography project, I would like to document the smallest corners of that living space, I would like to borrow their household daily objects, letting them speak themselves.

I remember 8m2 was a standard, a minimum requirement of living space for one person during the subsidized economy, or even previous to that, it was the number of living space applied to the campaign ” housing improvement” since 1954. Nowadays, after half a century struggling, many people still have to toss and turn in that 8m2 square, but it is not 8 m2 square for just one person, at times it is 8m2 for 8 people…”

A soundwalk, or soundmap, is a map of sounds, each of which has a specific location. When you physically get near each sound, it plays, creating a continuous audio experience as you walk from sound to sound. You choose the direction and the sounds follow you.

This is the concept of locative audio, and you’re probably already imagining the creative possibilities. The applications of our platform are numerous, from tourism: reactive audio tours of cities, custom themed tours where you can start and stop as you please and receive expert commentaries from a source you choose; to more subtle creative applications: musical experiences that react to your surroundings. We haven’t even mapped out the full possibilities yet.

In the workshops you’ll get the chance to work with Hans Sydow, we’ll give you an introduction to soundwalks and will present our experience with sound and the platform; a crash course in recording, preparing and editing sound (it helps if you have some experience, but it’s not necessary); and full instructions on how to create the soundwalks on the new web app.

In these workshops you’ll get an exclusive chance to use this brand-new platform (not yet released to the public) to create your own soundwalk, and you’ll get the chance to try what you’ve created out on the street!

Hans Sydow, who has been commissioned to create a soundwalk for Copenhagen, will be coming to Hanoi to work with Echoes, is an active sound artist and composer. He works in the field between poetry, sound and music, using language and concrete sound as a musical material. He received a three year grant in 2007 for work with music communication, and since 1996 worked to make history come alive through sonic retelling.

Exhibition: 14 – 20 Nov 2014

Casa Italia

In the framework of Program “Y-Viet 2014”’, the Italian Embassy in Vietnam has the pleasure to announce the opening of the photo exhibition by Italian photographer Maurizio COFINI “Vietnam – Italia: Colori distanti”, on 14th November at 5,30 p.m. in Casa Italia (18, Le Phung Hieu, Hanoi).

Born in Rome in 1956, Maurizio COFINI started his activity in 1979, paying a special attention to photographic adaptation for theater, ethnics and geography.

Winner of many awards in Italy, Cofini is a passionate reporter who has travelled many times through the Far East and above all in South-East Asia, drawing extensive inspiration for a rich repertoire of images, sensations and emotions.

The exhibition “Colori distanti”, dedicated to Vietnam, has already been displayed in Rome in 2009, followed in 2010 by another showcase dedicated to Vietnam and Cambodia “Mosaico d’immagini. Vietnam e Angkor”. Since the end of 2009 Cofini has been working for the Vietnamese art and architecture magazine KIẾN TRÚC NHÀ ĐẸP that has published some of the pictures in the present exhibition. In May 2010 Casa Editrice Anicia, an Italian publishing house, has released his photo book “Mosaico d’immagini. Vietnam e Angkor”. Cofini works currently for the photo agency Le Clic.

The exhibit hosts images whose twisting colours, fading of lights and shadows, lines intersections contibute all to express the artist’s emottion and strong passion for the two Countries. Cofini finds his personal and passionate way to remind us that Italy and Vietnam may appear far away from each other on the map, but are still bounded by many common cultural and aesthetic features.

Doors: VND 120,000

Blissful trance-inducing kosmische techno. Occult electronic music that makes heads nod and move bodies. The monolith in the middle of the dancefloor.

WXIV was formed in 2014 by Bangkok-based sound artist Koichi Shimizu and visual artist Voranat Voraphitak, both sharing the same passion for electronic music and synthesizers.

They craft live performances with rich dynamic sounds completed by complex textures and layers of layers of analogue/digital hybrid instruments, playing around with the machine’s constantness and randomness to create the perfect balance between order and chaos, between the magickal and the earthly (all the while making your bodies move).

Koichi Shimizu has been active in the Bangkok music scene since 2013, organising live events and running independent a record label, both under the name SO::ON Dry FLOWER. He’s also been running an open art space called SOL since 2008 to showcase various types of event and workshops. He is also known as a music composer and sound designer for films and has provided music and sound-design work for international acclaimed works such as Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Palme d’Or award at Cannes 2010) and Syndromes and a Century by Aphichatpong Weerasethakul, Invisible Waves and Nymph by Pen-ek Ratanaruang, as well as Wonderful Town and Hi-SO by Aditya Assarat and more.

ROBERT PIOTROWICZ is one of the most prolific and well-known artists in the Polish experimental and improvised music scene.

He began his music adventures in the 80s, playing the guitar in bands associated with Szczecin’s hardcore and punk scene. In the following years, Piotrowicz focused more intensely on experimentation and improvisation. He gave many concerts, often accompanied by acclaimed artists from electro-acoustic scenes around the world. Gazeta webzine described his impressions from a concert as follows:

<< Robert. Latino macho look, but with dreadlocks to his waist, tracksuit, as if he has just returned from Jamaica. They play improvised music. Robert plays guitar and analogue converters (including a mini oscillator and a ball of fabric). For most of the time, the guitar is lying on the table. Oh, and there is also a bow. Used in the conventional manner >>

Although his fierce live shows are mainly performed with analogue modular synthesizer and electric guitar, his recent album “When Snakeboy Is Dying” makes use of a broad spectrum of instruments (including piano and vibraphone) to create refined, subtle compositions. His other activities include electro-acoustic studio compositions, composing for theatres, participation in interdisciplinary art projects and sound installations. He is also known for collaborations with artists such as Anna Zaradny, Oren Ambarchi, Lasse Marhaug, Kevin Drumm and others.

Robert Piotrowicz’s performance is supported by Culture.pl. Follow his SoundCloud channel.

“Dee.F is an artistic side of Phu Pham, who in sound he attempts to capture its spectrum to codify the unstructured rhythm of being”.

Phu is one of the most active artists in the current Vietnamese music scene and has constantly striking his sounds through both solo and his band work – currently with “XAI”, a live techno punk band. Having performed from intimate venues to festivals, Dee.F continuously shapes his artistic expressions through experimental / obscure techno form.
