Screening of “Disorder”
Fri 26 Oct 2012, 6 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
We cordially invites you to the screening of “Disorder” by Chinese filmmaker, Huang Weikai. Huang Weikai’s one-of-a-kind news documentary captures, with remarkable freedom, the anarchy, violence, and seething anxiety animating China’s major cities today. As urbanization in China advances at a breakneck pace, Chinese cities teeter on the brink of mayhem.
One man dances in the middle of traffic while another attempts to jump from a bridge before dozens of onlookers. Pigs run wild on a highway while dignitaries swim in a polluted river. Unshowable on China’s heavily controlled television networks, Disorder reveals an emerging underground media, one that has the potential to truly capture the ground-level upheaval of Chinese society.
Huang Weikai collects footage from a dozen amateur videographers and weaves them into a unique symphony of urban social dysfunction. Huang shatters and reconstructs a world that’s barely comprehensible, though with palpable energy — vibrant, dangerous, and terrifying.
“Several [films] have caught the chaos of rapidly industrialized China, but none is as raw or terrifying as this.” —Glenn Sumi, Now Toronto
“One of the most mesmerizing films I’ve seen in ages.” — Hua Hsu, The Atlantic
Language: The film is in Chinese with ENGLISH and VIETNAMESE subtitles.
The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.
Free Entrance.

Photography Exhibition by Gerrit Engel
Exhibition: 18 Oct – 05 Nov 2012, 9 am – 7 pm
Goethe Institut
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Come to the Photograph exhibition of urban architecture in Berlin by architect and photographer Gerrit Engel.
Born in 1965 in Essen, Germany, Gerrit Engel studied architecture and photography at the Technical University of Munich and the New York City College. He currently lives and works in Berlin.
The photographs of Gerrit Engel resemble portraits, except that they do not show people, but houses. In recent years Engel puts his focus mainly on the cities of New York and Berlin. What we see at the Goethe-Gallery is the touring exhibition of the Goethe-Institut: “Gerrit Engel: Berlin. Fotografien”, a series of colour photographs of urban architecture in Berlin. Seemingly objective and arranged in chronological sequence, each building is described with a picture. All images are portrayed in the same manner – with a white sky, a reduced palette and a uniform depth of field – and could hardly be more objective. As they often show only the physiognomy of the architecture, viewers see the architecture as buildings without any bias nor prejudice. The colour images give insight into the architectural history of Berlin.
Free entrance.

JF Garage Concert 02 : J-Electronic
Fri 19 Oct 2012, 8 – 10 pm
Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam
27 Quang Trung
Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
The JapanFoundationCenterfor Cultural Exchange in Vietnamproudly presents its second act of the JF Garage Concert, “J-Electronic feat. Vietnamese Jew’s harp & zither” by Tri Minh (DJ), Sebastien Gesell (DJ), Duc Minh (Jew’s harps) and Tra My (Vietnamese zither) inHanoi on Friday 19 October 2012.
In this premier concert, modernity meets Vietnamese tradition. Tri Minh, one of the best electronic music solo artists inVietnam, will collaborate with two Vietnamese traditional musicians, Duc Minh on Jew’s harps (Dan moi) and Tra My on Vietnamese zither (Dan tranh).
Duc Minh, a member of international society of Jew’s harp, is an enthusiastic composer/researcher on Jew’s harps inVietnam. Studying Jew’s harps (or Dan moi in Vietnamese) under the highly revered musician/ethnomusicologist, Mr. Tran Quang Hai, Duc Minh became one of the pioneers to bring minority music to Vietnamese and international audience. This is his first-ever act to play with electronic music.
Tra My, a lecturer of Vietnam National Academy of Music and a member of Vietnam Traditional Orchestra, is the master of Vietnamese zither (or Dan tranh in Vietnamese). Earning a plethora of medals in contests and festivals, Tra My has been actively participating in various international orchestras and troupes by honorable invitations.
The catalyst to connect these traditional music masters into electronic music is a multi-talented musician, Tri Minh. Equipped with the degree of musical composition at Hanoi Conservatory of Music, Tri Minh started his career as a Jazz musician but explored his territory in experimental and electronic music, and consequently became one of the most acclaimed electronic musicians inVietnam. His flexibility and open-minded approach for creation attracts a lot of international and domestic musicians in various genres to collaborate with him, and collaborators enjoy all the time the sublimated fruits with him and the audience.
The concert will be kicked off with the sounds of Jew’s harp, introducing a minority song as well as a Duc Minh’s original song, followed by fusion of Jew’s harp and electronic music. Then the program focuses on Tra My’s excellent Vietnamese zither, starting with the Japanese famous song, Sakura [Cherry Blossoms], followed by the collaboration with Tri Minh, and goes to the climax of the concert, fusion of the all three musicians.
Another climax we cannot miss is a DJ live by Sebastien Gesell, a bilingual of French and Japanese. After being warmed up by stimulating music collaboration, you will be treated with the best of Japanese electronic tunes shuffled by Sebastien in the latter half of the concert.
We do hope our JF Garage Concert 02 will be a good showcase of another challenging fusion of modernity and tradition, as well as a good introduction of diversity in Japanese electronic music.
Free of admission. The concert starts at 8pm on Friday 19 October in the courtyard (Open Stage)(Capacity: around 200 guests) of theJapanFoundationCenterfor Cultural Exchange inVietnam(27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem,Hanoi). All free seats, first-come, first-served.

The organizers believe that the lack of spaces for arts is one of critical issues in Vietnamese arts scene. We do hope that Mr. Noda’s talk will provide you alternative ideas and inspirations how to think about spaces for arts in Vietnam.
This talk is a part of the umbrella project named “Skylines With Flying People – Multiplex projects on contemporary art” co-organized by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam and Nhasan Studio, with the support of Prince Claus Fund. The information on the whole project will be revealed in early December 2012.

And the experimental film by American female filmmaker Maya Deren, Meshes of the afternoon. The film’s narrative is circular, and repeats a number of psychologically symbolic images, including a flower on a long driveway, a key falling, a door unlocked, a knife in a loaf of bread, a mysterious Grim Reaper, etc.

Musick to Play in the Dark
Fri 26 Oct 2012, 7.30 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho
Organized by The Onion Cellar in collaboration with Hanoi Rock City, MUSICK TO PLAY IN THE DARK is a carefully curated (and planned) concert dedicated to boundary-pushing experimental music and video art. The evening boasts a killer line-up of international luminaries, local pioneers and new faces – all set to challenge unsuspecting audience as much as to guide them into new, unexplored terrains.
BLACK ZENITH is the duo of Darren Moore and Brian O’Reilly – two lecturers atLASALLECollege of the Arts. Being both active members within Singaporean free jazz and avant-garde circles, Darren and Brian regularly collaborate with local contemporaries, crafting works for theatre, dance and installation productions. Between them, the two have also performed at prestigious festivals and events worldwide, such as the 2010 Montreaux Jazz Festival or the Autechre-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2003, and with the likes of Otomo Yoshihide, William Basinski, LASALLE’s Head of Music Tim O’Dwyer, amongst others. As Black Zenith, the duo’s unique take on Noise music and video art see them utilize analog modular synthesizers to build up dense sonic textures and abstract soundscapes, at the same time generating live visuals by transforming audio signals into images, resulting in intense AV sets that are sure to capture your attention (and breath).
VU NHAT TAN hardly needs any introduction. After years of leading the local experimental underground with various live appearances and releases spanning everything left-field (from minimal classical to spoken word drone), Tan shows no sign of slowing down. His recent works include The Song of Napalm and Cracking Bamboo – composed for and performed at the 2012 LA International New Music Festival by an 11-piece ensemble consisting of Western and traditional Vietnamese musical instruments, as well as Hanoi, Hanoi and Hanoi – an orchestral piece for the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. Tan currently hosts a monthly residency at ATK as Vu Nhat Tan Group – playing and improvising with a myriad of local like-minded musicians of all disciplines. This concert marks the second collaboration between Vu Nhat Tan and The Onion Cellar (after the We Don’t Care About Music Anyway gigs / screenings), and like last time – he will be showcasing his noisy side here.
Bringing a feminine touch to the line-up, LUONG HUE TRINH’s seamless blend of field recordings, ambient soundscape and traditional music offers a breathing space for the ears in between the night’s sonic assaults – though not without a twist. Like a darker cousin of Sawako or Moskitoo, Trinh’s music conjures up images of black rivers flowing through cities, of the little things in life that are lost and buried amidst the madness of urban chaos. Born in 1985 and graduated from theNationalMusicAcademy in Jazz Keyboard, Trinh has already matured beyond her years with recent highlights including a commissioned work for the Goethe Institut. The Onion Cellar is proud to present a rare live performance from this rather underrated yet promising artist.
JRG_ONE is Jackson Garland. He makes sounds. He makes videos. He teaches high school by day. He lives inHanoi with his wife and son and dog. He is a bit of a traveller who has lived in three continents. And not much else is known about the mysterious jrg_one, except that he makes awesome fuzzed-out electroacoustic dark-ambient-ish music that completely won us over upon our first listen (not to mention the intriguing space-post-noise-funk rock project he used to be in). Having spent years infiltrating the Chinese alternative sceneJackson will be having his debutVietnam performance at Musick To Play In The Dark, also showcasing his video works. Come say Hi to him.
Last but definitely not least, SEBASTIEN GESELL will once again take on DJ duty, providing the audience with refreshing dancing treats (‘dance music’ within an Onion Cellar context, of course) – pulsating beats and glitches and clicks and all. You might have been familiar with him from his clever DJ sets at our Simon Whetham concerts and a couple of other laid-back nights at ATK, but when it comes to this guy, you always better expect the unexpected.

HCMC – San Art Laboratory – Session One
Opening: Thu 18 Oct, 6 pm
Art Talk: Sat 20 Oct, 4 pm
Sàn Art
3 Mê Linh
District Bình Thạnh, HCMC
Sàn Art presents ‘San Art Laboratory – Session One’ which will showcase 6 months of artwork production and experimentation by Tuấn Mami, Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai and Trương Công Tùng, who have participated in Vietnam’s first home-grown ‘studio/residence’ program called ‘San Art Laboratory’.
This will be the inaugural exhibition associated with this initiative and San Art is excited to present the results. These three artists are the finalists from a nation-wide call for applications that were assessed by an Advisory Board composed of local and international expertise in the teaching and production of contemporary art.
Begun on 1st May 2012, ‘San Art Laboratory’ is a studio/residency program, initiated and managed by San Art, in Ho Chi Minh City. It aims to provide 3 Vietnamese artists (under 35) with studio and living space for 6 months each. An additional studio and apartment is dedicated to international residents. During each ‘lab session’ (residency period), participating Vietnamese artists must be willing to undertake regular writing and discussion about their work and ideas with a specific ‘talking partner’. Successful Vietnamese applicants are granted production money, a studio to make their art, separate living quarters and a small living allowance. Each lab session ends with a group exhibition at San Art showcasing realized work.
Tuấn Mami has immersed himself in the everyday city life of Saigon, carefully collecting a plethora of used objects that have been forgotten by this city’s residents. From dis-used cars to broken mobile phones, Tuấn Mami’s ‘index’ of these items suggests another kind of universe where material life gains new meaning. Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai takes the invasive instruments of a gynecologist and has turned them into wondrous objects of fancy. Examining the ways in which man and science perceive the female body as both vessel of life and sexualized body, Mai questions her own relationship to flesh and beauty. Confronted by the density of image and language in daily life, Trương Công Tùng takes the readily consumed media of film, reducing its presence and meaning to what he considers their basic form – color, shadow and light. His resulting sculptures and video works illustrate this artist’s ongoing study of the meaning of time and space.
Tuấn Mami (b. 1982, Hanoi) has a BA in Art Pedagogy, Hanoi Fine Art University and currently lives and works in Hanoi. Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai (b. 1983, Hue) is a graduate of Traditional Decoration, Applied Arts, Hue Fine Arts University and currently lives and works in Hue. Trương Công Tùng (b. 1986, Daklak) has a BA in Lacquer Painting, Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University and currently lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with Consulate-General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, proudly present a photography exhibition “Metamorphosis of Japan After the War: 1945-1964” from 17 October – 22 December in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Danang.
This South-East andSouth Asia’s premier exhibition showcases 123 black-and white photographs by 11 renowned photographers to make a retrospective review of the Japanese society with full of creativity and energy during the turbulent period spanning from 1945 to 1964 that followed the World War II.
In 1945,Japanmade a new start as a defeated and devastated country after the WWII. However, after only 20 or so years, the nation’s society, economy, and culture underwent dramatic transformations. For the purposes of this exhibition, we define the “postwar” era as the period from the end of the war in 1945 to the year of the Tokyo Olympics, 1964, by which point the Shinkansen bullet trains were running, and a plan to double national income had raised standards of living, bringing consumer appliances such as TVs, washing machines, and refrigerators to a large number of homes. The 11 photographers introduced here were each active in this period of dramatic upheaval. Their work records the transformation of society, and many of the photographs that they took are significant from an artistic perspective in addition to being important records.
The photographers selected are Ken Domon, perhaps the best-known Japanese photographer of the 20th century for his cool-headed photo-realism, Ihee Kimura, whose approach to realism was distinguished from Domon’s by its unique aesthetics, Hiroshi Hamaya, who photographed the climates and environments of mountain and agricultural villages together with the lives of their inhabitants, Tadahiko Hayashi, who produced marvelous portraits, Shigeichi Nagano, Ikko Narahara, Kikuji Kawada, Shomei Tomatsu, and Yasuhiro Ishimoto, who represent a younger generation of photographers, and Eikoh Hosoe and Takeyoshi Tanuma, who were two of the photographers who demonstrated the creativity of photography.
It is our hope that as viewers enjoy their undeniable attractiveness and power, these photographs will also provide a starting point for thinking about the society of postwarJapanthat was their background. This exhibition will travel to three distinguished cities of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City from 17 – 29 October at Ho Chi Minh City Museum (92 Le Thanh Ton, District 1), Hanoi from 20 – 29 November at Ngo Quyen Exhibition Hall (16 Ngo Quyen) and Danang from 13 – 22 December at Danang Heritage Management Center (78 Le Duan).

Exhibition “The Makeup Faces”
Opening: Mon 22 Oct, 5pm
Exhibition: 22 – 29 Oct 2012
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum
66 Nguyen Thai Hoc St.
Hanoi
The exhibition consists of 22 lacquer paintings of artist Nguyen Van Cuong (1976). He is currently a teacher at Art Department of the University of Teaching. This series is inspired by one aspect of the society: the make up of a person before they get out of the house or their room.
Make – up is not pureply the action of putting on lipstick, clothes but also accessories. He has watched the face of many beautiful girls on magazine covers in Vietnam to analyze the outside beauty. Through his paintings, it seems he wants to question about these outside beauty and the potential beauty hiding underneath those attractive lips and make up.

This magnificent but unwieldy text is streamlined and sharply focussed to create a unique theatrical event that blends live music, spectacular imagery and thrilling action. Some familiar characters and scenes are cut but the heart of the play is revealed.
The actors themselves play cello, violin, percussion and sing stunning five part harmony. The production has been acclaimed by public and critics alike from Tokyo to Berlin and Malta to the Isle of Jersey. This season sees TNT’s KING LEAR return by popular demand to tour Asia and Britain. KING LEAR is directed by Paul Stebbings, whose multi-award winning productions of Shakespeare have been seen from London to Brisbane, and Atlanta to Shanghai. TNT collaborate with the American Drama Group Europe to create one of the most popular and innovative touring ensembles in the world. This is accessible and popular Shakespeare, as exciting as the original Globe productions of Shakespeare’s day that were aimed at any theatre-goer. Made in Japan Jokes and Punch Lines
RAKUGO by Katsura Utazo
In Hanoi: Wed 24 Oct 2012, 8 pm
VOV Theater
58 Quan Su, Hanoi
In HCMC: Sat 27 Oct 2012, 8 pm
The Student Cultural House of HCMC
643 Dien Bien Phu, P.1, Q.3, HCMC
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam shares the delight of welcoming Rakugo Master Katsura Utazo toVietnam to conduct his sit-down comedy on Wednesday 24 & Saturday 27 October 2012, in HCMC & Hanoi respectively.
Rakuko, literally fallen words, is a Japanese traditional verbal entertainment. A solo storyteller, sitting on the stage, equipped only with a paper fan sensu and small cloth tenugui as props, depicts long and complicated comical stories without standing up from the sitting position. As the stories are all spoken in Japanese, there have always been language barriers for foreigners to fully enjoy Rakugo performance.
However, this time, here are the exceptions. The Rakugo master, Katsura Utazo, kindly agrees to convey the funny Japanese stories with Vietnamese sub-titles. Such masterpieces of Rakugo stories as “Kinmeichiku” [Freely translated as Yotaro the Idiot], “Chotan” [lit. Long and Short] and “Shinigami” [lit. The Devil of Death] will be performed on stage.
The highlight is the story of “Shinigami” [lit. The Devil of Death] which is believed to be an adaptation of “Godfather Death” in Grimms’ Fairy Tales. You will witness how the well-known story inEurope is cleverly and funnily adapted in a unique Rakugo style.
We hope you will enjoy the “Made inJapan” jokes and punch lines through Utazo’s challenging performances.
Language: Japanese with Vietnamese sub-titles
Admission is free.
The free tickets are available in both cities from 14:00 on Friday 12 October 2012 in the following spots:
In Hanoi: The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) [Opening hours: 09:00 – 18:00 on weekdays, 09:30 – 11:30/12:30 – 18:00 on Saturdays, closed on Sundays]

Katsura Utazo
What is Rakugo?
Having its origin in 16th century and established during Edo era (17-18th century), Rakugo has been verbally passed down through one generation to another, from masters to apprentices as a professional art form. Performers sit on a small mattress in front of the audience and act out stories with a comic style and structure. In Rakugo, the performer can be a narrator, but usually performs the actual characters in the story. These characters converse without a narrator coming between them. The challenge for the performer is switching from one distinct character to another. Each character represents exaggerated aspects of the human personality, which we can be all readily related to. The predicaments, which they find themselves in, are part of everyday life.
Katsura Utazo (Rakugo Master, Member of Rakugo Artists Association)
Born in 1964. Katsura Utazo took his apprenticeship under Rakugo Master Katsura Utamaru in late 1991. In 1996, he took the name Katsura Utazo when he was promoted to 2nd rank of Rakugo artists. He rose to the highest Rakugo Master rank in 2005. Since then, he has been actively appearing various venues in Tokyo, and been enthusiastically sharing the fun world of Rakugo, the Japanese sit-down comedy with the Japanese audience as well as the foreign audience in Thailand, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, the US and Brazil. He also conducted his Vietnamese premier performance inHanoi in October 2010, with much acclaim. He occasionally takes the role of the presenter and/or reporter on several TV programs in Japan.

Conference on Green Housing
Conference, exhibition:

Eco-house of architect Ly Truc Dung, Hoa Binh Province
From 16-17 October 2012 a conference on “Green Housing in Vietnam: between Tradition and Modernity” will take place at the Goethe Institute. An interdisciplinary group of experts including Vietnamese and German scientists and decision-makers from ministries, architectural offices, local NGOs and construction companies will hold intensive discussions about obstacles and solutions for the promotion of climate-adapted architecture and energy-efficient construction in Vietnam. Partners for this conference are the University of Hamburg and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which coordinates the National Energy Efficiency Program, and the NGO Live & Learn.
More than a third of global energy consumption is used for homes and buildings. The way that buildings are planned, renovated and maintained has significant effects, not least in light of global climate change. In Vietnam, the potential to promote climate-adapted architecture and energy efficient building is far from exhausted. Due to the tropical climate a particularly large amount of energy for cooling and dehumidification is needed here. The economic boom has allowed construction to grow enormously. For the first time broad middle classes have emerged. The so-called “new consumers”, however, are often very consumption-oriented and lead increasingly resource-intensive lifestyles. They are the most important decision-makers in the construction of new residential buildings and are thus a key group for greater sustainability. In this context the ‘rediscovery’ of traditional tropical architecture, which is based on natural ventilation, represents an important opportunity.

Performance “Voodoo Funk”
Sat 20 Oct 2012, 8 pm
Screening of “Take Me Away Fast”: Wed 17 Oct 2012, 8.30 pm
ATK
73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi
You are invited to the performance of African vinyl collector Frank Gossner (a.k.a Voodoo Funk) to Hanoi. He’ll have seven years of African funk in his luggage ready to educate Vietnam about the exceptional, yet unheralded, music being made in the world’s most underprivileged continent. He’ll be selecting danceable African cuts that can’t be heard anywhere else on the planet, only at ATK.
Frank’s African adventure began in 2005 when he followed his passion and curiosity to West Africa. Since then he’s travelled extensively through Guinea, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Benin and Nigeria building one of the most unique collections of rare African vinyl in the world. It wasn’t easy, Frank has fled martial law and civil uprisings, been stranded in the bush, robbed at machete-point, followed old sailors around downtown Freetown, fished records out of insect nests and travelled thousands of kilometres on dirt roads – all in search of rare grooves.
His extraordinary journeys weren’t lost on those who read his record digging road trip adventures on his critically acclaimed blog. With more than 40 one-hour-long mp3 mixes and countless photographs and record cover scans, the site is a treasure trove for vinyl and funk enthusiasts. The blog brought him to the attention of documentary film maker Leigh Iacobucci who filmed his adventures to create the documentary Take Me Away Fast, an exploration of passion, loving music, meeting people and finding something.
Voodoo Funk will be playing African music you are guaranteed to have never heard before. You can’t buy it a shop and you won’t find it online – unless Frank put it there! But obscurity doesn’t get in the way of fun, with 15 years’ experience selecting tracks for dancing crowds in New York and Berlin, Frank knows the ultimate measure of any night’s success is dancing feet.
CAMA will be screening Take Me Away Fast at ATK on Wed 17 Oct with all proceeds going to help fund Frank’s South East Asia tour. On Sat 20 Oct, Frank will be spinning live at ATK.
