Showcase “Color – Wool 2″

Opening: Tue 14 Oct 2014, 4.30 pm

Exhibition: 14 – 20 Oct 2014

93 Dinh Tien Hoang, Hanoi

You are invited to the showcase “Color – Wool 2″ by Nguyen Hong Van.

According to artist Nguyen Hong Van:

“I was born and raised in a little alley in Ha Noi – a place that has left an indelible imprint of joy and sorrow on my memory. When I grew up, Ha Noi was also the place that evoked my first emotion when I moved into the realms of wool embroidery art.

A skewed roof, a pale-sun afternoon at West Lake, a street with a fairly cool wind of autumn, etc., all gather in enchanting shades of colors of Ha Noi – my beloved city.

I have been tirelessly working and exploring to convey cultural and art values in every wool embroidery picture. It is the art of sophistication and meticulousness of the colors and drunk with emotions. Many people thought I was too risky to embark on such a new and unique field as the art of wool embroidery. However, perhaps it is the nature of a learner of Fine Arts and the strong passion of a young person for exploration that have inspired me to this art form.

Over the past four years, there are 50 works of art unveiled at an exhibition and a display. Wool embroidery picture is taking steps to become a widely known and cherished art form. It was a weary yet worthy journey, especially when many wool embroidery pictures were displayed at numerous galleries or became decorative art gift preferred at home and abroad. Besides the topic of Ha Noi, my works also focus on topics of the country – people – culture of Viet Nam as a vivid recreation through the eye of wool embroidery.

A long road is still ahead. I hope that all of my works of art will gain greater love and bring more emotional values to those who appreciate art and talent!”

Screening of “Match Point” and “Stardust Memories”

Screening of “Match Point”: Fri 17 Oct 2014, 7.30 pm

Screening of “Stardust Memories”: Sat 18 Oct 2014, 7.30 pm

Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents

51 Tran Hung Dao Str (4th floor), Hanoi

In the last week of Woody Allen film month, you are invited to the film screening “Match Point” and “Stardust Memories” at TPD.

Original language with English subtitles. The screening is for educational purpose and supportive to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.

Information about the films:

Match Point

MATCH POINT is a 2005 drama film written and directed by Woody Allen which stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Scarlett Johansson, Emily Mortimer, Matthew Goode, Brian Cox, and Penelope Wilton.

Rhys Meyers’s character marries into a wealthy family, but his social position is threatened by his affair with his brother-in-law’s girlfriend, played by Johansson. The film treats themes of morality, greed, and the roles of lust, money, and luck in life, leading many to compare it to Allen’s earlier film, Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989).

Stardust Memories

STARDUST MEMORIES is a 1980 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Woody Allen, Charlotte Rampling, Jessica Harper, Marie-Christine Barrault and (a then-unknown) Sharon Stone in her film debut.

The film is about a filmmaker who recalls his life and his loves – the inspirations for his films – while attending a retrospective of his work. Allen considers this to be one of his best films, along with The Purple Rose of Cairo and Match Point. The film is shot in black and white and is reminiscent of Federico Fellini’s 8½ (1963), which it parodies.

The film was nominated for a Writers Guild of America award for Best Comedy written directly for screen. Allen denies that this film is autobiographical and has expressed regret that audiences interpreted it as such.

Studio – San Art Laboratory

48/7 Pham Viet Chanh, Binh Thanh Dist, HCMC

You are invited to an artist talk by Maria Fernanda Plata – an evening where architecture meets art from a Latin American perspective in Ho Chi Minh City.

‘Throughout my entire career, architecture has been the framework I have used to refer to aspects of the human condition that interest me the most, such as its temporality, fragility and terminality.

My practice is also a response to the continuous state of flux within the built environment and how such change affects the relationship between human beings and their dwellings.

During this talk I will discuss the process of my art and why I choose to work with particular materials (such as turning non-structured materials such as paper and sand into sculptures). I will share why method of working is more important to me than technique. I will also share the concepts surrounding my work and what role my city – Bogota, Colombia – has played in my practice as an artist.’

Maria Fernanda Plata holds a BFA from Universidad de los Andes, Colombia, and an MA in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. Some of her recent exhibitions include: ‘Imperfect Idler or When Things Disappear’, BIACI, Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, 2014; ‘Pender’ (solo) Galería Casas Riegner, Bogotá, Colombia, 2013; ‘Bienal de Artes plásticas de Bogotá’, Fundación Gilberto Alzate Avendaño, Bogotá, Colombia, 2012; ‘Apuntes sobre la ciudad, ArtBo, Proyectos Individuales ArtBo’ Bogota, Colombia, 2012; ‘Tracing Time’, Josee Bienvenu Gallery, New York, USA, 2012; Zona Maco Sur Proyectos Individuales, México City, Mexico, 2011 and ‘La Buena Vida’, 42 Salón Nacional de Artistas, Santa Marta, Colombia, 2010.

Exhibition “Minimal Asian” to Celebrate Twelve Years of Module 7

Exhibition: 18 Oct – 09 Nov 2014, 9 am – 7 pm

Module 7

83 Xuan Dieu Str, Tay Ho, Hanoi

Founded in 2002, Module 7 is a leading company in interior design consultancy in Hanoi with many innovative products pursuing their own style of simplicity, sophistication, elegance inspired by Asian cultural essence.

The design of Module 7 is the seamless combination of contemporary design and Vietnamese cultural essence. Products are designed and made in traditional craft villages across the country. Each item holds long-standing cultural values of traditional artisanal know-how with a resonance of modernity.

On October 18th, we are going to hold a 12 year celebration with an interior exhibition titled “Minimal Asian” by designer and founder of Module 7 Pham Kieu Phuc.

A dozen year celebration is also an occasion for us to express and share our passion and vocation in preserving and raising the value of handicraft production methods using local materials such as: woods, ceramics, bronze, bamboo and lacquer. You are also invited to the whole aspect and insight of our works, from products development process to interior design projects as well as skillful craftsman portraits through video clip made by our team.

CREATIVITY IS AN INHERITANCE

To Phạm Kiều Phúc, designer and founder of Module 7, contemplating to express not only the form but the hidden spirit of Asian decor is an exciting challenge, an open road that she has an opportunity to work in the present context where the craftsmanship is rich but lacks of competitiveness due to the absence of a suitable design thinking.

“Good design, to my mind, is the realization of a concept in which all the details are justified, where everything is necessary but there is no excess, where the function perfectly suits the context that give born to the idea. Our conical hat is a typical example.

There are my guides in creating objects and interior design. I am inspired by the serenity I have felt working with craftsmen and reflecting on their work. I do all I can to instill the knowledge they have given me into every object or piece of furniture I make. My final products are no longer mere craft objects, they always contain a core of tradition.”

    TARAGANA PYJARAMA

    FEEL FREEZE

+ visuals

TARAGANA PYJARAMA

Copenhagen-based Eriksen has been steadily gaining impressive momentum – and adulation – as both a producer and a remixer since his first tracks in 2010. Having already remixed singles for the likes of Delorean, Polock and Delphic, he was invited to join John Talabot’s much-admired Hivern Discs stable and had his first breakthrough EP in 2011 for Fool’s Gold. That was quickly followed with an approach from Germany’s music institution Kompakt to release his full debut album, which came out a year ago to much critical acclaim.

LYDMOR

A shy girl enters a stage in Vienna and stands in front of 400 people. None of them know her music, and she is alone on stage – only accompanied by a computer, keyboard and some electronic instruments. 40 minutes later and everybody screams for more. The last couple of years the young singer and producer has charmed the world with her quirky electronic music and intense live performances. 2014 has been dedicated to her solo project ‘A Pile of Empty Tapes’ on Copenhagen Records – a universe of heavy beats, dreamy soundscapes and intimate songs.

FEEL FREEZE

The story of Feel Freeze is a story about two friends and musicians.

The audiences’ reception of the new music and reinvented constellation is overwhelmingly positive and the project and concept of Feel Freeze is born. They finished their debut-EP ‘Future Emotions in a Digital Heart’ in May 2014 and since then, everything has been going fast for the duo.

Exhibition “Not Quite Landscapes” at Dong Phong Gallery

Exhibition: 12 Oct – 12 Nov 2014

Dong Phong Art Gallery

03 Ly Dao Thanh Street

Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Artist Vu Duc Trung will once again present lacquer-art to his admirers at the solo exhibition “Not Quite Landscapes” opening at Dong Phong Art Gallery in Hanoi on 12th October 2014. Vu Duc Trung last exhibited his lacquer works at the solo exhibition But is it landscapes in 2012.

We perceive nature to be an endless source for the themes that the artist uses and renews again and again. He creates various points of view that allow us to delve deep into the sensation of space and time and the objects that revolve around them.

In Vu Duc Trung’s work, nature is rendered using traditional methods of lacquer painting to produce an array of colours in which shapes and figures have been eliminated. The permutations of forms and pallets are done with such proficiency that the paintings become akin to a leisurely walk. Vu Duc Trung does not coerce the viewer into views of preconceived forms, but rather lets them experience a carefree and pleasing sense of nature between heaven and earth.

Looking at his paintings, do we not sometimes get a clear sensation of emptiness, of soullessness, even of desolation and coldness? Are these the perceptions of the viewer or do they also reflect the artist’s state of mind?

The most striking feature of this exhibition is the round lacquer boards on which all the paintings are made. Is it true that the artist “binds” landscapes into specific shapes so that they become not quite landscapes? They imply a deeper sense of the finite and infinite …

Windy Day 11: Folk Sculpture – Beauty of Dragons and Fairies

Sun 12 Oct 2014, 6 am – 6 pm

The Dinh of Tho Ha (Bac Giang) and Phat Tich pagoda (Bac Ninh)

You want to discover appealing secrets beneath old roofs of Dinh (Communal house)? You want to understand simple but splendid beauty displayed on its pillars and rafters? You want to find out the historical message sent by ancestors? You can do that all by joining the 11th tour: “Folk sculpture – Beauty of dragons and fairies” held by Tôi xê dịch.

Since the old days, Vietnamese people have been famous for their diligence, creativeness and ingenuity. A diversified world of folk sculpture has been structured with shapes, decorative patterns and colours, conjuring the panorama of Vietnamese life in the past.

Among various colours of history, it is luckily easy to trace back to clear indications of folk sculpture featuring Northern communal houses and pagodas. Emerging and flourishing during the period from the 16th to the 17th centuries, such traditional “colours”were not over shadowed by historical struggles during the long and fluctuated path of Vietnamese history, but strongly survived until modern time. They are precious keys leading us to the quintessence of folk sculpture attributed by previous generations.

Through exquisite and meticulous carvings, brilliant artists personified senseless woods and stones, transforming them into meaningful patterns – representatives of the history. They tell us the stories of daily life in the old day in such a rustic way: funny plants and animals’ stylisation, daily scenes of cultivation, festivals and even amusing activities of lovers in a lotus pond which pushed down the solidly conservative bastion of the feudal era in order to reach the world of freedom, love and aspiration.

Such patterns are “no-character documents” reflecting the process of exchanging and adopting values in everyday’s aspects ranging from economy, politics, and culture to religions in Vietnamese history.

Let’ s come to the contemporary experimental concert of a Los Angeles based couple, a composer and singer with Yemen and Israel roots Odeya Nini and her partner, Archie Carey, a fascinating Bassonist.

The Performance is a series of composition and improvisations for the voice, exploring the many colors, expressions and ranges of the voice, from beautiful melody to dark texture. The performance is interdisciplinary in nature including theatrical elements and movement.

*About the artists:

Odeya Nini is a Los Angeles based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer, originally from NY with Yemenite Israeli roots. As both a composer and soloist, her music acknowledges the arch from silence to noise and all its variant sonic exposures. She is devoted to redefining vocal interpretation and song through an exploration of extended vocal techniques, resonances, and how they communicate in conjunction with the physical body’s language.

Archie Carey is a bassoonist, composer and multi instrumentalist performing music that ranges from orchestral to experimental.
