I write songs sometimes so I could sing what I really feel. I wouldn’t call myself a songwriter or a musician. what music do i play? im not so sure. you could call it indie pop if you like”

BEING JOHN MALKOVICH is a 1999 American fantasy comedy-drama film, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze. It stars John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, and Catherine Keener, with John Malkovich playing a fictional version of himself. In the film, Cusack plays Craig Schwartz, a puppeteer who finds a portal that leads into Malkovich’s mind.
The film was nominated in the 72nd Academy Awards in three categories: Best Director for Jonze, Best Original Screenplay for Kaufman and Best Supporting Actress for Keener.
BLOOD SIMPLE is a 1984 neo-noir crime film written, directed and produced by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film’s title derives from the Dashiell Hammett novel Red Harvest (1929), in which the term “blood simple” describes the addled, fearful mindset of people after a prolonged immersion in violent situations.
It was the directorial debut of the Coens and the first major film of cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, who later became a noted director,[citation needed] as well as the feature film debut of Joel Coen’s wife Frances McDormand, who subsequently starred in many of his features.
In 2001, a “Director’s Cut” DVD was released. It ranked #98 on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Thrills. The film also placed #73 on Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

When a cop is killed during one of the robberies and Salvador is captured, the trial to determine the young activist’s fate is swift. She was a lecturer at Vietnam’s University of Fine Arts in Hanoi between 1993 and 2006 thanks to the support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). She has participated in and organised many exhibitions. In her own way, Radulovic was a very important figure in fostering the cultural exchange between Vietnam and Europe. She’s also played a big role in the emergence of the first group of Hanoi artists – who at the time pursued new forms of artistic expression: installation and performance art. Exhibition “That Little Distance,” by Jamie Maxtone-Graham
Opening: Thu 25 Sep 2014, 6 pm
Exhibition: 25 Sep – 31 Oct 2014
Galerie Quynh – Downtown
Level 2, 151/3 Dong Khoi, District 1, HCMC
“That Little Distance,” is an exhibition of new work by Hanoi-based photographer Jamie Maxtone-Graham. This is the artist’s first exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City.
Drawing from two bodies of work “Still. Life.” and “That Little Distance,” the exhibition features photographs produced in the derelict setting of a former factory where the only light source was daylight passing through a large, north-facing window. Each photo was taken with an exposure of 15 to 20 seconds. With a nod to 17th century Dutch painting and the memento mori genre, the dramatic light in the photos lends the work a sacred and serene air.
A visual play on the fragility of our daily experience, “Still. Life.” depicts seemingly disparate objects bound together into a structure marked by tension. In “That Little Distance,” Maxtone-Graham focuses on enigmatic portraits of individuals with his own presence subdued in deep shadow. In a palette of soft, muted colors and rich textures, a poet, gangster, artist collective and gay couple are just some of the players in the artist’s haunting, illusionary world. These simple, quiet scenes belie the profound themes at play where history, art history, prejudice, human relationships, nature and time itself collide in small performances of stillness.
A native of Connecticut, USA, Jamie Maxtone-Graham has been working for more than 20 years in the field of narrative cinematography, engendering an eclectic body of works ranging from independent films, mainstream feature films, episodic television, and photography. He first came to Vietnam in 1990 for the feature documentary From Hollywood to Hanoi and returned a number of times before calling Hanoi his home. In 2007 Maxtone-Graham was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship to pursue State of Youth, a photographic project on contemporary youth culture in Vietnam. He has published numerous photography portfolios in notable publications such as burn Magazine, Trans Asia Photography Review, Culturehall, Invisible Photographer Asia, and Photography & Culture. His photographs have been featured in exhibitions in Europe and Asia including ASEAN, Le Magasin de Jouets, Arles, France (2013); Media/Art Kitchen, Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta (2013); Terra Cognita: Noorderlich Photofestival, Groningen, Netherlands (2012); and The Desiring Garden, Kathmandu Photo Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (2012).
Jamie Maxtone-Graham lives and works in Hanoi.

Exhibition: 30/09 – 26/10/2014
L’Espace
24 Tràng Tiền, Hà Nội
You are invited to the installation exhibition by Trieu Tuan Long.
At first glance, the exhibition is merely a herd of seven horses calmly grazing in a meadow. If we look more closely, these horses are carefully crafted from Boi papers, a Vietnamese traditional material, and are covered with randomly arranged pictures conveying meaningful life lessons. Is social media network gradually dominating our life? Transmitting information by horse riding enables us to search for information, screen and make them ours. But most importantly, it allows us to live more slowly.
Free entrance.
“7x” in Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2014
Sun 28 Sep 2014, 8 pm
Youth Theatre
11 Ngo Thi Nham Str, Hanoi
You are invited to Vietnamese new dance performance “7x” in the framework of Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2014.
The dance demonstrates the story of an individual growing up during the significant changes in society. From these influences, his inner conflicts start to appear and develop. He cannot just point and tell, or trace back to the root of the problem to solve it. During the progress, the impact from outer consequences and inner instincts, the torn between senses and emotions drive his conflicts to grow stronger. Our character starts to find a way to fight against the imbalance of the extremes, trying to play the role of a judge to balance out the senses and emotions in order to control his feelings and to solve inner problems. However, from being too absorbed with chasing these invisible conflicts, one day he stops realising what is happening around and becomes isolated in his own world.

“Hanoi Stardust” in Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2014
Fri 26 Sep 2014, 8 pm
Youth Theatre
11 Ngo Thi Nham Str, Hanoi
At invitation of the Goethe-Institut the German choreographer Arco Renz|Kobalt Works produce through an intensive working in several weeks a three-part-dance piece with five soloists of the Vietnam National Opera Ballet (VNOB) and guest performers Nguyen Duy Thanh and Khai Ngoc Vu. The performance proposes a vigorous and vibrant encounter with classical ballet in the context of a dynamic and youthful Vietnamese society. This performance is in the framework of Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2014.
A group of 7 Vietnamese performers challenges our perspective on the codified language of classical ballet. Hanoi Stardust confronts our perception of inherited and accepted codes of beauty and virtuosity with emerging and surprising codes of the present. Through obstinate repetition and variation of movement, the performers “drill” into accepted, standardized forms of beauty and virtuosity; elements of classical language are negotiated to reveal individual deviations from collective routines and acquired patterns. Hanoi Stardust expands on the drive to be alive, in movement, and stitches a lively minefield of relations between individuality and uniformity.
In 2002 the German choreographer Arco Renz founded the Brussels based ensemble Kobalt Works and develops since then dance pieces based on the central concept of “abstract dramaturgy”, which focuses on the dialog of the body with the parameters of time and space to explore the emotional potential of the abstraction. The main emphasis on his work is the transcultural and multidisciplinary co-operations between European and Asian Artists. His piece “Crack” with the Cambodian group Amrita was honored with the ZKB Patronage Prize on the Theater Festival 2012 in Zurich.
Arco’s choreographs are characterized by their intense physicality and explore the emotional potential of movement, together with the interaction between movement, light, video and music. In addition to the work as a choreographer, he developed dance education through numerous workshops and is a guest lecturer worldwide. His ensemble Kobalt Works is supported by the Flemish Government of Belgium.

Opening of International TV – Expert Conference “Mini-Input” with Film “Married at First Sight”
Thu 25 Sep 2014, 7 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Each year the International Input TV Conference looks for the most innovative, most provocative and most interesting TV programmes and TV formats from around the world in order to present them to an expert audience. The Goethe-Institut organizes a Mini-Input – a smaller version of the International Input – in the region each year. After last years´ successes in Thailand and the Philippines the Goethe-Institut brings the Mini-Input Southeast Asia this year for the first time to Vietnam. This exciting expert conference provides more than 70 TV producers and filmmakers from 11 countries (Australia, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) the opportunity to catch up on the newest developments in the world of TV: Which new and creative ideas are there for TV programmes? Which formats are internationally successful and can serve as a model? TV is still for the majority of the population the most important media for information and entertainment, but there is a fierce competition with online formats.
Eventually, the Mini-Input also serves as a platform for exchange with colleagues from the neighboring countries and international experts.
This reality show from Denmark is an unusual social experiment: The candidates for marriage are selected and only get to know each other in front of the wedding altar. The TV Show accompanies the freshly married couples during their daily life routine after the wedding. A very successful TV show which provoked many debates.

UK Film Week 2014: Scotland – Year of Homecoming 2014

CGV Parkson Paragon, HCMC
The glorious Sunshine on Leith musical will open British Council’s 2014 UK Film Week featuring Scottish films.
Scheduled for 22-28 September, this year’s UK Film Week celebrates Scotland as the host country of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which took place in Glasgow in early August this year.
Other feature films to be shown include Shell, Ae Fond Kiss, For Those in Peril, Not Another Happy Ending and Shell, representing a mixture of genres to celebrate the richness of Scottish culture.
The uplifting musical Sunshine on Leith, which is based on the stage hit of the same name and features music by pop-folk band, The Proclaimers, scores a very high rating of 92% on the Rotten Tomatoes review website. Renowned British movie reviewer Mark Kermode, said: “I shed a tear within the first 10 minutes, and spent the rest of the movie beaming like a gibbering, love-struck fool.”
The film promises to charm local audiences through its mesmerising camera work capturing the incredible beauty of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, also home to the Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival.
The high quality continues with Not Another Happy Ending, set in Glasgow, a comedy about writer’s block. Jane Lockhart cannot write when she is happy. As she is working on the follow-up to her best-selling debut novel, Jane finds herself stuck trying to finish the final chapter. Tom Duvall, the editor of a struggling publishing company, is forced to make her incredibly unhappy.
Ae Fond Kiss and For those in Peril, though contrasting in genres, are both very close to the heart of Vietnamese culture. Ae Fond Kiss is a love story between Roisin, a white woman and Casim, a Pakistani young man whose family have arranged for him to marry his cousin.
They start a relationship but Casim is torn between following his heart and being a good son. Set in an insular Scottish community, For Those in Peril tells a tale of woe as it portrays how local superstition can ruin a young man’s life as he is blamed for the unexplained tragedy of a shipwreck.
Shell “casts a spell with its portrait of cramped lives on a Scottish petrol station forecourt. It keeps the tale on a steady simmer right through to the closing moments, when it spits and sputters into melodrama” (The Guardian).
Cherry Gough, Country Director, British Council Vietnam said: “Scotland has a tremendous cultural heritage: as well as being the home of the world-famous Edinburgh Festival, it has produced many famous writers, artists and musicians. Loch Ness is now familar to Vietnamese people through the Japanese ‘Doraemon’ comics, and Scotland’s stunning cities and landscapes have featured in many films and TV programmes. And, of course, Scottish tartan and the kilt are recognised worldwide!
“This year’s UK Film Week will give you an opportunity to have a closer look to the richness of Scottish culture through five award-winning films including drama, romantic comedy and musical, brilliantly capturing contemporary life in Scotland.”
This year’s film festival also marks the very first time the British Council has partnered with YxineFF to introduce seven short films by young Vietnamese film makers. Six award-winning Scottish short films will also be featured alongside Vietnamese shorts. YxineFF is a local non-for-profit project supporting young filmmakers.
British Council in Vietnam is are also pleased to invite Paul Welsh to Vietnam to deliver two workshops on film pitching, targeting potential film makers in Vietnam. Paul is the founder of Digicult, an independent film company specialising in developing emerging film talent. He also produced Skeletons (2010), a nominee for the Outstanding Debut Feature by a British Director at the 64th British Film Academy Film Awards. In 2013, Lore, a film which he was a co-producer, received the Feature Film Production of the Year Award at the 2013 Screen Producers Australia Awards.

Dr. Yvonne P. Doderer “In the Midst of the Mainstream?”
Sun 21 Sep 2014, 3 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Nha San Collective, Queer Forever! and Goethe Institut Hanoi are pleased to send you information about our Sept. event “Queer movements and contemporary art in German-speaking countries” – a lecture and a discussion with Prof_in. Dr_in. Yvonne P. Doderer.
Since the 1970s like in the U.S. in German-speaking countries and under the symbol of the rainbow, a political, “queer” movement has formed up fighting for its rights, for the societal and political recognition of being queer. Today and in these countries it looks like as if this movement has been arrived in the midst of the societal mainstream. But what role does art play in the development of this movement? And to ask in reverse:
which role does this movement play in contemporary art? Because a lot of artists have a queer background but are not necessarily making “queer art” whereupon it can be asked what “queer art” might be. However there are also artists who take their queer identity and/or their political understanding as a starting point for their artistic practice and who thereby contribute to societal change, to change perspectives. In this lecture some examples of queer art productions in terms of single positions and exhibitions in German-speaking countries will be introduced and discussed.
Languages: German with simultaneous translation into Vietnamese.
Please note that this event is by invitation only. Please register to receive your invitation by email contact@queerforever.com, subject “The lecture on Sunday, Sept. 21″, including your name.
Yvonne P. Doderer (Germany) is head of the “Office of Transdisciplinary Research and Cultural Production” in Stuttgart and Professor for Cultural & Gender Studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf. Since years she works as an artist, lecturer and author in the international artistic field focusing on the linkage of gender, urban and spatial research as well as activism.
Solo Exhibition “Fading Dreams – Disintegrating Realities” by Ha Manh Thang in Thailand
Opening: Sat 20 Sep 2014, 5 pm
Exhibition: 20 Sep – 18 Oct 2014
Thavibu Gallery
JTC Jewelry Trade Center
Suite 433, 4th floor 919/1 Silom Road
10500 Bangkok, Thailand
Art exhibition Fading Dreams – Disintegrating Realities with new oil and mixed media paintings by the Vietnamese artist Ha Manh Thang is going to take place in Thailand.
Built on his previous series, the artist continues to be inspired by themes of memories, history, and cultural heritage, from ancient towers at Angkor Wat and sporadic village communal houses in Vietnam’s rural north, to old costumes used by emperors and royal families during Vietnam’s Le and Trinh dynasties in the 17th century.
Thang’s paintings can be viewed as a conscious choice in presenting his own world. For him, painting is a kind of behavior that neither glamourizes nor represents the world. Painting is to understand the world. In his understanding, the world appears as neither Eastern nor Western. Rather, understanding is a process, where both the East and the West as two different world views become each other’s substance and effect, means and end, structure and form.
Ha Manh Thang is 34 years old and one of Vietnam’s most important young and upcoming artists. He graduated from the Hanoi Institute of Fine Art in 2004 and has taken part in international exhibitions in Singapore, Germany, Hungary, and the USA, and his works are in the permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum.

About the film
Director Cesc Gay’s idea for “In the City” came to him at a meal with friends: a private, secret look at a group of characters who have a number of emotional experiences they never talk about. The movie that came from this inspiration is “In the City,” the ensemble story of a group of thirty-something friends in Barcelona. Behind the facade of their friendship are many secrets. For example, single Sofia lives a fantasy life of romance and unconscious lies. Tomas is having a secret affair with one of his students. Married Irene finds herself attracted to her friend Silvia.
