Screening of “Still Life”

Sat 31 Mar 2012, 6 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học

Hanoi DocLab is pleased to present Jia Zhangke’s Still Life (2006). Still Life interweaves the story of a miner (Han Sanming) who travels thousands of miles to a town near the Yangtze River to look for his ex-wife and the tale of a nurse fetching her husband who has been working at the river without sending a single word home.

While the film does not let these two characters cross paths, together they reflect changes in people’s lives brought by the Three Gorges Dam, which flooded villages near the Yangtze River and led to the emergence of some new settlements. Already acclaimed for his earlier works, most of which also star Han Sanming and Zhao Tao, Jia is probably the best known Sixth Generation director. With Still Life, he continues his probing grassroots studies of Chinese life. Jia’s previous acclaimed titles Platform (2000) and The World (2004) also competed at the Venice Film Festival. Mainland Chinese director Jia Zhangke’s Still Life (aka Sanxia Haoren), a last minute entry into the 2006 Venice Film Festival, eventually won the Golden Lion award thanks to its top-notch cinematography and wonderful storytelling.

Languages: The film is in Chinese with English and Vietnamese subtitles

Free Entrance. The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.

Screening of “Bi, Don’t be afraid”

Thu 29 Mar 2012, 7.30 pm
Cinematheque, 22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

You are invited to the film screening of “Bi, Don’t be afraid” andQ&A with the Director Phan Dang Di. “Grounded in the authentic bustle of Hanoi and the uncomfortable interplay of familial relationships, Bi, don’t be afraid! is a thoughtful cinematic exploration of inchoate longing, the messy consequences of physical decline and encroaching death, and confirmation that sex and youthful exuberance spring eternal. Frankly and overtly sensual with scant dialogue, this contemporary portrait of relatives living in close quarters while harbouring secrets is conveyed with impressive visual assurance.” (Screen Daily)
The debut feature film by Phan Dang Di, Bi, Don’t be afraid! won the SACD Prize in the International Critics week of Cannes Film Festival 2010.

This adult tale centers around life in a dysfunctional family, as seen through the eyes of six-year-old Bi. The boy lives with his parents, his aunt, and a maid in a stifling old house in Hanoi. His parents’ relationship is getting worse, and his 30-year-old reserved aunt (a high school teacher) has never touched a man. Bi entertains himself under the watchful eye of the maid. His grandfather, a retired diplomat, comes home with a serious illness. At first, Bi seems afraid of his grandfather, but they soon begin to develop a closer relationship. Bi’s father, who spends time pursuing a relationship with his masseuse, escapes in alcohol and avoids the old man. Meanwhile, his aunt has sexual fantasies about a 16-year-old she met on the school bus. Left to his own devices, Bi escapes to the tall grasses by the river’s edge and the cool ice factory next door. In the stifling heat, ice turns out to be the only tangible connection between family members.

Lecture “Arts and Culture as the Basis of a Nation”

Fri 30 Mar 2012, 6 – 8 pm
Conference room (6F Building D), National Library of Vietnam
31 Trang Thi, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a lecture by Oriza Hirata, one of the most influential opinion leaders on the arts scene in Japan, on “Arts and Culture as the Basis of a Nation” in Hanoi on 30 March 2012.

In his thought-provoking book, “Geijutsu rikkokuron [lit. Arts as the Basis of a Nation]” (2001), Oriza argued that the key to restore Japan is in the attempts to put the arts as the basis of a nation, beyond the obsession of economic growth. His epoch-making vision in this book brought him the AICT (Association Internationale des Critiques des Théâtre) Critique Award in 2002.

Why should we put the arts and culture as the basis of a nation? How can we do so? In his lecture in Vietnam, Oriza will explain the reasons persuasively from his multiple experiences as a playwright, a director, a manager of a private-sector small theater and a professor for several universities, and will set out his concrete ideas and opinions on cultural policies for a nation from the first-hand experience as the former Special Advisor to the Japanese Cabinet (2009-2011).

In the very moments when the economics of Vietnam has been rapidly developing and the society has been drastically changing, we do hope that his lecture will provide you a good opportunity to re-think the position of arts and culture in Vietnamese society, and to consider how to shape the cultural policy in Vietnam.

A must-see lecture for arts and culture advocates is coming soon.

Languages: Vietnamese simultaneous interpretation.

In between touring Europe and playing all the major festivals like Bestival and Glastonbury, Benji still found time to put together his debut album “Beats, Treats & All Things Unique”. The Weekend Japanese Film Shows

16 – 18 Mar 2012
Room 4, National Cinema Centre
87 Lang Ha, Hanoi

On the occasion of one year after the 3.11 Tohoku Earthquake in Japan, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam offers special weekend screenings of Japanese films, which are all related to the natural disasters occurred in Japan, from Friday 16 – Sunday 18 March 2012 at National Cinema Center in Hanoi.

People in Japan have long history to live and cope with various kinds of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami, volcanoes and typhoons. Tackling with these disasters itself is quite hard and tough, and it often takes long time to conquer and recover from these disasters once happened. These disasters, however, also inspire a certain number of film directors in Japan to make a film related to a disaster, or physically affect the film shooting itself. The selected 4 films are all such good examples.

“Quartet” (2012) is made in Urayasu City, where affected by severe soil liquefactions after the earthquake. The film crew could complete the film with the supports from united volunteers. When we know the background of the film, the message of the film (the importance of uniting family) shines brighter and reaches us more deeply.

“Haru’s Journey” (2010) is made in Miyagi Prefecture directly affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Although the film was made before the 3.11 disaster, the problems of the elderly depicted in the film give us hints to think over the elderly in the affected area.

“Fukushima Hula Girls” (2011) is a documentary film following the struggling lives and activities of “hula girls” in Spa Resort Hawaiians where hit by four disasters; earthquake, tsunami, nuclear accident and harmful rumors. Their efforts to rebuild the paradise and to bring back smiles to Japan are heartwarming.

“WANKO” (2011), on the other hand, depicts a life of a family and a dog who are living in Miyakejima, a small island where an active volcano exists. Based on a true story, this film induces the audience to burst into tears for the family and the dog.

We hope that the audience will keep the memory of the Tohoku earthquake and think over what is important in our life through these four films.

Languages: All films will be screened with Vietnamese and English sub-titles.

Free admission. Tickets are available at the Japan Foundation (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) from 10am on Friday 9 March.

Screening of “Eraserhead”

Thu 15 Mar 2012, 3 pm
DOCLAB, 56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội

Video Art Video presents the screening of Eraserhead, an experimental film by American director, David Lynch. Eraserhead is a 1977 American surrealist film and first feature film of David Lynch. David Lynch once described his stunning debut feature simply as “a dream of dark and troubling things,” but the unclassifiable ERASERHEAD is so much more: an expressionistic headtrip, a Grand Guignol nightmare, a pitch-black comedy of manners, and even a deeply personal allegory about the (post-) nuclear family.

Amidst a monochromatic wasteland teeming with smoke and shadows, Jack Nance’s wire-haired wage slave Henry struggles to navigate the horrors of mutant offspring, sinister hallucinations and, most terrifying of all, his new in-laws.

David Keith Lynch (born in 1946) is an American filmmaker, television director, visual artist, comic book artist, musician and occasional actor. Known for his surrealist films, he has developed his own unique cinematic style, which has been dubbed “Lynchian”, and which is characterized by its dream imagery and meticulous sound design. The surreal, and in many cases violent, elements to his films have earned them the reputation that they “disturb, offend or mystify” their audiences.

The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.

Languages: English with Vietnamese subtitles.

A Multiple Event on Manga

Opening: Wed 21 Mar, 10 – 11.30 am
Exhibition: 21 Mar – 15 Apr 2012, 9.30 am – 6 pm
Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange
International conference: 23 – 25 Mar
Vietnam Women’s Museum

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, Women’s MANGA Research Project, asianbeat of Fukuoka Prefectural Government, in cooperation with Shojo Manga Power Project, share the delight of hosting a multiple event on Manga entitled “Women & Manga: Connecting with Cultures beyond Japan” in Hanoi from March – April 2012.

Manga, which is a kind of lingua franca, is now a global phenomenon connecting with cultures beyond Japan. Particularly, shōjo manga or the girls comics genre is interesting owing to its history of more than a half century which has been inspiring women to create, while previously around the world, many comics cultures have targeted boys, not girls.

In this multiple event, we will focus on manga works created by women for women, and explore the potential of such manga cultures beyond Japan, throughout three dimensional events; exhibits of manga works, workshops by manga artists (for invitees only), and an international conference by scholars on comics from different countries.

The exhibition is a visual introduction of shōjo manga, focusing on the artworks of two leading Japanese comics artists; Hideko Mizuno and Moto Hagio. Mizuno is one of celebrated shōjo manga pioneers who drew sparkling stars in character’s eyes, while Hagio is often called “A god of shōjo manga” with numerous awards.

There will be also a special section to exhibit the artworks of Mutsumi Hagiiwa and FSc (Singaporean) who will come to Hanoi for their workshops and talks. The opening will start at 10am on Wednesday 21 March at the exhibition hall of the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung) and the exhibition runs until Sunday 15 April.

At the international conference, distinguished scholars and experts on comics will provide academic research topics on comics and manga with Vietnamese interpretations. Studying comics is quite new and this is the first conference in Vietnam solely dedicated to comic studies. The conference will be held at Vietnam Women’s Museum (36 Ly Thuong Kiet) from Friday 23 – Sunday 25 March.

We hope that you will enjoy manga not only visually but also academically and enhance the understanding of manga culture, especially of shōjo manga through our event.

Exhibition: Free of admission.

Lectures on Japanese Contemporary Literature and Poetry

HANOI: Tue 20 Mar, 9 – 10.30 am
Conference Room 2nd Floor, Literature Institute, 20 Ly Thai To, Ha Noi
HUE: Thu 22 Mar, 9 – 10.30 am
Phuong Nam Culture Center, 15 Le Loi, Hue
HCMC: Sat 24 Mar, 2 – 3.30 pm
Room D201, University of Social Science & Humanities, 0-12 Dinh Tien Hoang, District 1, HCMC

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam invites Ms. Hachikai Mimi, one of the promising young poets/writers in Japan, to host the travelling lectures on Japanese contemporary literature and poetry in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City from 20 – 24 March 2012.

Equipped with M. A. in ancient Japanese literature at Waseda University, Mimi has been actively working on writing, ranging from creations of poems, novels, texts for picture-books, translations of foreign picture-books, to reviews on literature and poetry, and lectures at public spaces.

Her first book of poems, Ima nimo uruotteiku jinchi [The Position That’s Being Moistened Even Now], published when she was a graduate student, won the Nakahara Chuya prize, one of the most prestigious prizes for poetry in Japan. Her second book of poems, Ku mono wa kuwareru yoru [The Night Those Who Eat Get Eaten], in 2005, won the Geijutsu Sensho Shinjin prize [lit. the New Face Award of Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for Poetry].

Mimi also has a collection of mini-essays, Kujaku no hane no me ga miteru [The Eyes on a Peacock’s Feathers Are Watching], 2004, in which she says, “When you are about to write a poem, the time and space an instant before the words come out are dense. Tightly packed. Quick, if you can, you think. But once you put it down on words, there’s something that falls between words and never comes up. Sometimes it’s something you deliberately throw away in an instant, sometimes it’s something you drop without meaning to that never comes back.”

She often alludes to classical Japanese literature and engages in wordplay. Her fine sensibility on words, equipped with academic research on ancient Japanese literature, convinces us of broadening the possibility of poetry and literature.

Her varied achievements on literature will assure you of the understanding of stimulating issues on the contemporary literature and poetry, as well as its modern history. We hope the audience will enjoy the intellectual discoveries.

Languages: The lecture will be delivered in Japanese with Vietnamese interpretation.

Admission is free. Advanced registration is highly recommended.

Hue – Exhibition “Altered Cloud”

Opening and artist talk: Thu 15 Mar, 8 am
Exhibition: 15 – 29 Mar 2012
Hall of Hue University of Arts, Hue University of Arts, 01 To Ngoc Van, Hue City

The project will exhibit a sculpture block shaped as a cloud, which is transforming into a water monster (15 x 6 x 4 m) with many arms. The sculpture is made of aluminium beverage cans and will be exhibited as floating on the surface of Tinh Tam lake (literally Lake of the Serene Heart), which was one of the most beautiful landscapes of the capital city but is now seriously intruded and polluted.

Objectives of exhibition:

- Create changes in the landscape of Tinh Tam lake in a dialogue way. In the past few decades, there have been no projects or policies on amending and designing the lake for the new relationship between residential development and public landscape, but only the intrusion for little and private pragmatic benefits without cultural awareness. The appearance of the sculpture in a special location will attract public attention, create unusual feelings, and suggest ideas for broad discussions on the development of a heritage city.

- Call for the attention of the society and related institutions toward the problems of heritage intrusion and environmental pollution.

- Mobilize teachers and students of universities around Tinh Tam lake to raise the same voice to ask related departments and agencies to be more responsible for the cultural heritage complex of the Ancient Capital.

- Concretize the potential danger under the surface of Tinh Tam lake by a sculpture block.

-    Stimulate visual artists to pay attention to pressing social issues. Particularly, students of University of Arts need to have concrete actions against the daily situation that is happening before their eyes.
