Music Night QBik

Fri 11 May 2012, 9 pm
Hanoi Rock City]
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi

HRC Presents… drum ‘n’ bass maestro QBik.

Hanoi old timers will remember him hyping up the city a few years back alongside the world’s number one beatboxer Killa Kella with his chest ripping, tubthumping drum ‘n’ bass anthems. This boy is the real deal: he’s performed alongside Nero, his massive 12″ single ‘My House’ was featured on DRUM&BASS ARENA’s ‘Summer Selection’ compilation of ‘Biggest Summer Anthems Ever’, and he’s dropping a remix of Killa Kella’s new single on world famous 100% Records (Moby, Robyn, Placebo).

Acclaimed by the kings and queens of the bass planet, New Zealand born, Australia-based QBik is played on radio stations across the world. DJs Pete Tong, Annie Mac & Nerm on BBC Radio 1 and Crissy Criss on 1XTRA have all waxed lyrical about his music. QBik is one of Australia’s most in demand producer/DJs and Hanoi gets its hands on him for just one night.

QBik will be supported by local drum ‘n’ bass diamond on the decks, Vaughan, the rapidly gaining reputation Nam Jam Collective, both courtesy of Synergy Music Production, along with the filthiest mits in the city DJ Dirty Fingrz, fresh off his set supporting Tha Trickaz in HCMC last week.

Riverscapes IN FLUX

Opening: Sat 12 May, 6 pm
Exhibition 13 – 26 May 2012, 9 am – 7 pm
Artist talk: Mon 14 May, 6 pm
Cactus Contemporary Art
17/12 Nguyen Huy Tuong Street, Ward 6, Binh Thanh District, HCMC

Goethe-Institut  presents 17 Artists from Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines at the CACTUS CONTEMPORARY ART Gallery in HCMC.

The Red River and the Mekong, the Irrawaddy and the Chaopraya: Southeast Asia is characterized by big river landscapes like no other place in the world. Yet these lifelines and vital ecosystems are acutely endangered by the consequences of socio-economic development and climate change.  The riverscapes, and with them the livelihoods of millions of people, face the threat of destruction.

The art project “Riverscapes IN FLUX”, conceptualized and organized by the Goethe-Institut in Vietnam, seeks to create a discourse on this ecological key issue in a new context.  The Goethe-Institut invited young artists from Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines to reflect in their work the ecological as well as socio-economic and cultural changes that the riverscapes in these countries are currently experiencing.

Art and creativity are, according to Goethe-Institut, supposed to foster an understanding for the invaluable ecological as well as cultural meaning of riverscapes beyond borders.

After Hanoi and HCMC, Goethe-Institut will present the exhibition in Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Jakarta and Manila.

Visit the exhibition online.: http://blog.goethe.de/riverscapes

The exhibition also took place at Goethe Institut in Hanoi last April.

National Library of Vietnam
31 Trang Thi Str, Hanoi

Author and creator of the well-known UK’s series “Mr Gum”, Andy Stanton, will visit Vietnam for the EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture) Literature Festival in Hanoi.

The event will take place at the National Library from 11 to 12 May.  It follows an event held in March, when British Council in Hanoi together with Nha Nam Publishing House launched a Writing and Drawing Contest for young people to contribute their own ideas for the Mr Gum books.

Andy Stanton started the series with the idea of reading it for his cousins on Christmas Day as a present. The first book took him just eight hours on Christmas Eve. After that, the manuscript was forgotten in a drawer for several years before Andy found it again and discovered the story still made him laugh. He decided to edit it and send it to several agents. And this was how Mr Gum started his journey, in theUKand from there on to many countries across the world.

The stories with illustrations by David Tazzyman, won numerous awards including the Roald Dahl Funny Prize Award and the Blue Peter Book Awards – given by the longest running children’s TV show in the world – BBC Blue Peter.

Exhibition “Croire/Douter”

Opening: Thu 10 May, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: 10 May – 09 Jun 2012
Galerie Quynh
65 Đề Thám
District 1, HCMC

Galerie Quynh is pleased to present French artist Truc-Anh’s first solo exhibition in Vietnam. Entitled CROIRE/DOUTER, the exhibition explores the flux of certitude and ambiguity inherent in notions of dichotomy and paradox.

CROIRE/DOUTER takes as a point of departure the duality of the image, and the possibilities of belief and contradiction that lie therein. Employing mechanisms of destabilization, more specifically the coupling of the material with the immaterial, of paint and fiction, Truc-Anh challenges the viewer to identify with the fractured world he presents. Drawing upon a range of references from art history to contemporary culture, the presumed direct relationship between the viewer and the work betrays a tenuous hold.

While this exhibition focuses primarily on the medium of paint, Truc-Anh (b. 1983, lives and works between Ho Chi Minh City and Paris, France) has worked across a variety of media, including photography, video, drawing, sculpture, and performance. He has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Europe, most notably in 30 ans du Mai-Photogaphies curated by Claire Bresson (2010), and White Spirit Part 1 and 2 curated by Tania Nasielski (2009-2010). CROIRE/DOUTER marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Asia.

Screening of “The Gleaners and I”

Fri 04 May 2012, 6 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội

Doclab cordially invites you to the screening of “The Gleaners and I” by French documentary filmmaker, Agnès Varda. After seeing a famous painting by François Milet, Les Graneuses (“The Gleaners”), of a group of women stooped over picking up leftover stalks of wheat, French documentary film maker Agnès Varda began to wonder about modern-day gleaners — the people who scavenge their food from the scraps that our modern industrial society discards as waste.

She wondered about trash in our modern times: “Who finds a use for it? How? Can one live on the leftovers of others?” The result, The Gleaners and I, is a moving depiction of the people who — after the harvest — pick through the dirt to find potatoes and tomatoes left behind, scour the beach for oysters washed up after storms, pick grapes and figs that farmers reject, and go “dumpster diving” to recover discarded loaves of bread, sandwiches and other food. Varda’s film, released in 2000, is essentially a road-trip to various places in France where gleaners prowl for leftover food. It must have required a lot of patience, resourcefulness and charm for Varda to identify so many different types of gleaners and then earn their trust.

Agnès Varda (born 30 May 1928) is a French film director and professor at the European Graduate School. Her movies, photographs, and art installations focus on documentary realism, feminist issues, and social commentary — with a distinct experimental style.

Languages: The film is in French with Vietnamese subtitle.

The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.

Free entrance.

You are invited to a visual art exhibition of Lolo Zazar titled ”Voice of the Wall”. Living 5 years in Vietnam, being attracted by rapid changes of Hanoi, Lolo Zazar records time’s marks on walls of the city with sharp and romantic view.

KH CAT B TONG means drilling and cutting cement.

These mobile phone numbers are from individual and small business which provides services for building and destroying buildings.

Thousands of phone numbers like these cover the public walls in Vietnam and a big fragment of history is being written in these walls.

These signs are made by the human and change with time and effected by natural factors such as wind, rain, sun and the heat.

From his 5 years living in Vietnam, fascinated by the constant and fast changing of Hanoi, Lolo Zazar documented these changes in the city walls.

These are the moving pictures and a combination of many factors.

To celebrated the 1000th anniversary, the phone numbers on public walls are being erased but you can still find them in small lanes everywhere.

Free entrance.

TNT Theatre Britain return to Vietnam with OLIVER TWIST in May 2012. This production has toured worldwide and been performed in over thirty countries. Charles Dickens’ masterpiece is brought to the stage in a dynamic performance that integrates live music with powerful physical theatre, comedy with tragedy and even a dash of audience participation! This is the real OLIVER TWIST as portrayed by Dickens, the first modern novel the first novel to have a child as its hero and the first novel to explore the industrial city. But it is also a love story, a comedy, a crime thriller and a dark exposure of the link between poverty and crime. What better way to celebrate Charles Dickens two hundredth birthday than to watch this acclaimed version of his best known work.

TNT and presented by ADG Europe, and this is their fourth production in Vietnam, having previously presented ROMEO AND JULIET, A CHRISTMAS CAROL and MACBETH.

The play id written and directed by Paul Stebbings and produced by Grantly Marshall. The musical score is by Thomas Johnson. The production is full of action and is easy to understand even for those whose English is not first rate. OLIVER TWIST tours to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi as part of a their current world tour. The production has been hailed as “ a brilliant version of Dickens’ masterpiece” (Times of Malta) and “ A stunning and accessible theatrical performance” (Japan Times), “A dark and thrilling piece of music theatre” (German press). The company have been named as “the best touring theatre company in the world” China National TV and “The most interesting development on the current theatrical scene” The Guardian (London).

OLIVER TWIST has been described as the first modern novel. It is one of the few novels whose characters have entered into modern myth- Fagin, Bill, Nancy and the Artful Dodger can claim to be some of the best known literary creations outside of Shakespeare. The enormous energy of these characters and the full blooded portrait of the first modern urban nightmare, London, make the story not only exciting and dramatic, but also truly contemporary.

The themes and social issues raised by Dickens are as relevant today as when it was first published over one hundred and fifty years ago. The central theme is the link between poverty and crime. Beyond that it explores the way society treats its weakest members.

Dickens’ style is highly theatrical, and indeed he himself gave dramatic readings of much of OLIVER TWIST to huge audiences in Britain and the USA. Dickens’ style switches between the almost documentary to the comic, from action packed narrative to emotional drama.

TNT sweep away the sentimentality of so many versions and present the story through the eyes of Fagin as he stands on the gallows awaiting execution. The story is his last attempt at justifying his life of crime. The audience too must answer if he was indeed at fault. Is he a criminal or a victim? Does he care for his boy thieves or does he exploit them?
