VietNamNet Bridge - A solo exhibition “Project Habit/ At” by artist Ruchika Wason Singh from Delhi, India is taking place at Huong Ngo Art Space, 3rd Floor Nola café, No. 89 Ma May Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.

Through the “Project Habit/At” exhibition, Ruchika Wason Singh has taken a new approach: accommodation and migration – some of the biggest problems in the world nowadays.

Instead of portraying scenes where people sit in crowded places in buildings, Singh takes a look inside each person living in metropolitan area. Behind the modern and flashy lights of cities, the symbol of wealth and prosperity which is frequently advertised in the media, it is the problems of fitting in, the complexities of immigration/migration, the separation of public space and the inequality between social groups. Rather than feeling happy for having met all the basic needs in life, people tend to feel depressed and crowded in artificial places and even in the presence of mankind.

Ruchika uses pictures of garbage as the language of her visual glossary. She gathers and piles up wasteand used things into dunes with faces of monsters. Nothing can describe the throw-away society better than that. 

Yet, Ruchika has no intention of making her work influenced by any political or social view. She simply wants to find a space open enough to ease her stress and tiredness caused by her surroundings which, according to her, are chaotic and constantly changing

Dr. Ruchika Wason Singh was born in Delhi in 1974. Pursuing her creative interests, she completed B.F.A. (Painting) in 1997 and M.F.A. (Painting) in 1999 from College of Art, New Delhi. In 2001 she undertook a research on the Sociological frameworks within the Indian Contemporary art in the twentieth century, at Delhi University. 

This research was supported by the Junior Research Fellowship (2001-2006) from University Grants Commission, New Delhi. Following this she received Ph.D. in 2008. She is an Associate Artist at Digital Institute for Early Parenthood, U.K. and Member, Editorial Board, Journal of Mother Studies. Currently she is Associate-Professor, Department of Painting, B.F.A., College of Art, New Delhi, India.

Ruchika Wason Singh also participant of Month of Arts Practice, an Contemporary Art Exchange project between Vietnamese and International artists organised by Heritage Space. The project will be implemented from Sep 24 – Oct 28, 2017.

This exhibition is part of a collaboration between Huong Ngo Art Space and Heritage Space to conduct a series of mini showcases at the venue in order to enrich local arts & cultural values. 

The exhibition will close on September 30. Entrance is free.
