VietNamNet Bridge – The Six Tones, a Vietnamese-Swedish experimental music ensemble, will launch its double album “Signal in Noise” in Hanoi on August 30.
The CD is a product of The Six Tones’ collaboration with both traditional and experimental musicians based in Hanoi.
Guest performers include Vietnam National Academy of Music Traditional Music Department Head Le Pho, an expert in traditional Vietnamese flute music, and renowned experimental talents Tri Minh, Vu Nhat Tan, and Tran Thi Kim Ngoc.
The Six Tones have toured and performed together since 2006, participating in musical theatre projects and working with choreographers.
The ensemble hybridizes traditional Vietnamese musical styles to accommodate the addition of Western stringed instruments.
The Six Tones are comprised of zither player Nguyen Thanh Thuy, monochord artist Ngo Tra My, and Swedish guitarist and string instrument maestro Stefan Östersjö.
The name of the group, taken from a Frisk composition, refers to the six tones of the Vietnamese language.
Built on foundations of shared learning, the group aims to push its Vietnamese and European inspirations beyond a mere element collage to a sound more complex and experimentally oriented.
