The conference, which was held by the justice ministry and the local department of justice, focused on the implementation of legal regulations concerning marriages with foreigners in Viet Nam and solutions to improve consultancy services available to Vietnamese brides-to-be.

Official statistics show that between 2011 and 2014, more than 50,000 Vietnamese persons married foreigners or Vietnamese residing overseas. Eighty per cent of them were female, and most of their spouses were from Taiwan and South Korea.

Participants at the conference discussed the reality of the implementation of relevant regulations and the quality of human resources in charge of handling cases of marriages with foreigners. They also talked about administrative reform incentives, which save the time of the concerned people.

Many participants said the authorities should improve education levels and raise awareness among women, especially by creating jobs for women in rural and remote areas, as well as for those returning from failed marriages with foreigners.

They also asked the relevant agencies to strengthen legal regulations on the issue, in order to prevent unwanted incidents in marriages with foreigners.
