From a young age, artist Truong Dinh Huy traveled with his father to rural areas rich in Vietnamese spirit, which nurtured his deep appreciation for folk culture. His paintings are akin to the melodies of children's folk songs.
Truong Dinh Huy is passionate about folk culture, focusing his work on silk and oil paintings with vibrant colors. Particularly with silk, he innovates by using fewer washes and employing dense color blocks and square shapes, contrasting with the traditional soft and gentle style.
In recent years, he has shifted his focus to dó paper, gouache, and acrylic. Like his work on silk, his approach with dó paper involves innovative techniques that do not rely on the material's natural bleeding properties, resulting in a fresh visual effect.
For the "Dream" exhibition, Truong Dinh Huy explores subdued, mystical colors to express deep subconscious thoughts and aspirations. The layers of color blend into each other, creating a world of nuanced emotions that immerse the viewer into a different realm of consciousness. According to the artist, dreams allow people to freely explore their deepest desires, hence the title "Dream."
Art critic Do Huu Bang notes that if painting is an expression of personal emotions towards life, then each of Truong Dinh Huy's paintings emits a whisper of deep longing amidst the diverse rhythms of life.
"I feel that each of his paintings is like a folk song, reminiscent of the days when village children would play, run, and sing carefree along the dikes, observing the sky, plants, flowers, birds, and the activities of people around them. Each song encompasses a mix of joy, anger, and quiet contemplation," shares Do Huu Bang.
Born in 1965, Truong Dinh Huy graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1989. He participated in group exhibitions in Hanoi in 1995, 1996, and 1998, and in Singapore in 1998.
Growing up in Bac Giang province, Truong Dinh Huy was immersed in the sweet melodies of quan họ (folk songs). Following his father, a set designer for the Ha Bac Quan Họ troupe, he traveled to many villages rich in Vietnamese heritage.
Currently, Truong Dinh Huy teaches at the Bac Giang Intermediate School of Culture and Arts.
