This unique geological feature, along with the lush, transforming landscapes of the surrounding valley, draws nature enthusiasts and travelers looking for tranquility and adventure.
From mountain climbing to tranquil boating sessions during the rainy season, Mat Than (God's Eye) offers a rich tapestry of activities set against the backdrop of one of Vietnam's most picturesque settings.
Situated in a vast valley, the Mat Than Mountain in Cao Bang becomes a captivating landmark due to a large natural hole that pierces through the mountain, with its widest diameter reaching about 50 meters. This unique feature is part of the scenic landscape around Thang Hen Lake in the UNESCO-listed Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, located approximately 50km from the center of Cao Bang city.
Mat Than Mountain is not only a site of breathtaking natural beauty but also a "healing" destination that attracts numerous visitors each year for its serene and verdant environment, offering a variety of engaging activities immersed in nature.
Locally known as Thung Mountain, or Phia Piot in the Tay ethnic language, due to the large hole at its peak resembling a "giant eye," the mountain and its surroundings transform with the seasons, making it a dynamic and picturesque destination throughout the year.
In the dry season (from September to March of the lunar calendar), the valley is lush with fresh grass, ideal for camping and picnics. During the rainy season (from April to August of the lunar calendar), the area becomes a vast, clear water lake suitable for boating and fishing.
Visitors are advised to check the weather forecast before their trip to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Hoang Van Huy from Hanoi, who specializes in tours to Ha Giang and Cao Bang, shares that visiting Mat Than Mountain offers not just breathtaking views but also the opportunity to engage in various activities like mountain climbing, camping, and boating.
Additionally, visitors can explore other attractions such as Nam Tra Waterfall and the Danh village, known for its traditional stilt houses with yin-yang tiled roofs, or learn about the culture of the Tay ethnic group in the area.
"Don’t miss out on tasting some local delicacies such as ant egg sticky rice, chestnuts, rolled cakes, grilled hill chicken, and black jelly," suggests Huy.
The road to Mat Than Mountain is accessible, with two popular routes: one from the center of Cao Bang city through Ma Phuc Pass and another starting from Lenin Stream in Truong Ha commune, Ha Quang district.
The route through Ma Phuc Pass is favored by many for its stunning scenic beauty and as a prime spot for a photo stop before reaching the mountain.
Visitors can choose to explore Mat Than Mountain on a day trip or opt for longer, structured tours ranging from two to three days, with options combining Ha Giang and Cao Bang.
For those wishing to stay overnight, it is advisable to bring a specialized tent or rent one from local lodging businesses, with prices ranging from 400,000 to 600,000 VND per night per person.
