Exxon Mobil and Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group will build a gas and power plant in central Viet Nam to supply gas and power along the East Sea.

The Dau Tu (Investment Review) newspaper reported that the two companies had begun to search for a site for the project, favouring the northeast area of the Dung Quat oil refinery.

The newspaper cited Vo Tien Dung, deputy chief manager of the Dung Quat Economic Zone, as saying that the value of the partnership could reach billions of US dollars.

The details of the project have not been reported to agencies, however, Exxon Mobil and PetroVietnam reportedly wanted a 200ha plot, half of which would be initially used to build a 1,500 MW power plant.

Under the plan, the capacity of the plant will be raised to 4,000-5,000MW, and there will also be a gas processing facility.

Last month, PetroVietnam's general director, Do Van Hau, worked with central Quang Ngai Province's People's Committee to transport gas from lots number 117, 118 and 119 into the province to develop a gas – electricity complex.

Meanwhile, according to a recent agreement on investment between PetroVietnam and the province, Quang Ngai will apply special incentives for this project.

The province also encouraged PetroVietnam to select the Dung Quat Economic Zone as the location for the project, aiming to transform the area into the nation's oil refinery centre.

In addition to the Dung Quat Economic Zone, C proposed three other sites for the project. All four locations are some 75-85 kilometres from lots 117, 118 and 119.

The sites are located in the Ca Voi Xanh (Blue Whale) platform, for which PetroVietnam and its US counterpart signed a development deal in July.
