Vinh Quang Commune in Hai Phong City has offered to give temporary accommodation to the family of Doan Van Vuon, a local farmer who has been detained after resisting a forced removal decision imposed on his land, but Vuon’s wife has yet to accept the offer.

Yesterday morning, the People’s Committee of Vinh Quang Commune, Tien Lang District, met with Vuon’s wife, Nguyen Thi Thuong, to inform her that the commune would arrange for her and her children to stay in a public house if she wanted.

Thuong thanked the commune for the offer but said she couldn’t accept it because she was concerned about the safety of her family, especially at night.

As reported earlier, Vuon was arrested after he violently reacted against Tien Lang District’s forced removal decision on January 5, 2012 to reclaim 40 hectares of land allocated to him in 1993 and 1997.

One day later, his house was allegedly destroyed by district authorities and his wife and children have since then stayed in a tent that they set up as a temporary shelter.

In the February 10 meeting to resolve the case, the Prime Minister concluded district authorities had violated the Law on Land in reclaiming Vuon’s land and ordered the district to revoke all of their illegal decisions and return the land to Vuon.

For their wrongdoings in reclaiming the land, Chairman of Tien Lang District People’s Committee Le Van Hien and his deputy Nguyen Van Khanh have been suspended for investigation.

Similarly, Phan Dang Hoan, Secretary of the Vinh Quang Commune Party Committee, and Le Thanh Liem, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the communal People’s Committee have also been suspended.
