Hanoi police have penalized the administrator of the social media group "Dong Anh News" for approving and posting false information about flooding in the capital.

The Cybersecurity and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Hanoi Police announced on September 24th that the administrator had approved a misleading post regarding the city’s recent storm and flood conditions.

The post, which falsely claimed that a dike had broken in Kim Tien Village, Xuan Non Commune, and that approximately 500 houses were submerged in water, was approved without proper verification.

The post garnered significant attention, including numerous interactions, comments, and shares. Its content led to public concern and confusion, affecting the city’s disaster response efforts.

Given the ongoing challenges posed by Tropical Storm No. 3, which has caused widespread damage in several provinces, authorities emphasized that spreading false information only exacerbates the situation and hinders emergency management efforts.

Following this incident, the Hanoi Cybersecurity Department launched an investigation into the violation and is processing the case according to legal procedures.

Hanoi authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when sharing or posting information on social media, especially regarding sensitive topics such as natural disasters. The police stressed that inaccurate or unverified information can cause unnecessary panic and disrupt official disaster management efforts.

Authorities recommended that residents follow only official sources of information, such as government websites and verified news outlets. Any individuals found sharing false or misleading information online will face strict legal consequences.

This incident has raised concerns about the responsibility of social media group administrators, especially those managing large communities. Administrators must ensure that content is properly verified before approving posts for public view. Failure to do so can lead to the spread of misinformation and unnecessary public concern.

The Hanoi Cybersecurity Department is closely monitoring social media activity related to flood reports and will continue to take action against those responsible for spreading false information. The goal is to maintain public order and ensure accurate communication during emergency situations.
