In the context that Vietnamese cinema is witnessing positive developments and integrating into the world, the formation of Vietnam Cinema Promotion Centre has created favourable conditions for investment in production as well as cooperation among agencies, enterprises and film makers in the country.

Based on the actual development of the country's cinema and the aspiration of film producers and businessmen, the mobilisation board for the formation of the Vietnam Cinema Development Promotion Association, under the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has actively succeeded in recent months.

On June 11, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a decision to establish the association. A Congress for its launching is expected to be held late July.

Countries with developed film industries in the world have cinema promotion centres, also known as Film Commission.

They have the function of supporting the investment activities in production, joint ventures, and links with domestic and foreign film makers as well as the expansion of the market.

They are also responsible for promoting the brand of cinema and the films’ background to the world, while training high-quality human resources for film production businesses.

In addition, the commissions would attract international film making teams and create favourable conditions for them. Many commissions in the world have brought about successes for their nations’ cinema, including in the US, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan, the UK, Italy, Denmark, Czech Republic, Poland, Australia and Canada.

At present, most ASEAN countries have cinema promotion associations and commissions. For example, with effective activities, Thailand’s association has significantly contributed to attracting many major film projects from Hollywood and other countries to make their films there.

The RoK’s cinema has also gained successes thanks to its cinema promotion association.

Vietnam has many beautiful and diverse landscapes, friendly people and abundant human resources, with particularly dynamic and enthusiastic young film makers.

Several major foreign films, including Dong Duong (Indochina), Nguoi tinh (Lover), Dien Bien Phu, Nguoi My tram lang (The Quiet American) and Kong: Skull Island, were made in Vietnam, contributing towards Vietnam to becoming an attractive destination for big film producers in the world.

However, Vietnam has not had any formal organisations that can gather film producers and investors to promote the internal force of the national cinematography as well as connecting and supporting foreign film studios to come to Vietnam.

Therefore, the formation of the Vietnam Cinema Development Promotion Association will offer opportunities for the country’s cinema sector to expand its international cooperation.

It will contribute to promoting the image of the land and people and traditional cultural identities of the nation to the world, in line with the development planning for cinema industry and development strategy for Vietnamese cultural industries, meeting the expectations of film makers.

According to Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, former Director of the Cinema Department, once it is put into operation, the organisation will create favourable conditions for organisations, businesses and individuals related to film making, along with investors and promoters, to support investment, production and joint venture activities as well as to connect with domestic and international film makers, expand their markets and introduce their brands.

In addition, the association will promote the training of high-quality human resources for Vietnamese cinema, while boosting the promotion of the country’s tourism through films and movies.
