VietNamNet Bridge – The images showing the thighs of a female student full of long rips have made the Internet users’ community seething. Is this a new trend of the youth?

The scenes are so horrible that no one would be able to keep their eyes off the photos. A pair of thighs of a female student was shown with a lot of long rips, some of them have got dry, while others remain oozing with blood. The images have been forwarded among the Internet users’ community with different captions. One of the captions reads: “Is this the behavior one should do to prove her love?”

According to Zing.vn, it’s still unclear where the images come from, but they have caught the special attention among young people, who believe the images show the serious psychological problems of a part of the youth in the modern times.

“I feel sorry for her. She might have suffered from depression for a long time, which has prompted her to torture herself,” Bui Thu Trang, a university student in Nghe An province, said.

Meanwhile, Tran Trung Quan, a student in Hanoi said he heard that some young people nowadays like ripping their hands or legs.

“I have heard that some people, who suffer from the autism, like ripping hands and legs, because there exists a kind of hormone or a catalyst inside them, and they only feel easy when they see bleeding or when they feel pains,” he said.

“I once saw the images like this before, but I this is the most terrible one,” he added.

Doan Ngoc, a student in Hanoi, also said that this is a foolish behavior of the youth. She made a wild guess that the female student did this because she was unlucky enough and she would rather to suffer the physical pains than emotional pains.

“Try to get up and continue your life in the best possible way,” Ngoc said.

The teenagers’ mortification syndrome?

In fact, such horrible images once appeared on forums and blogs. Legs, hands and faces of the victims were full of the rips which were made in the way to create meaningful words, such as “han” (hatred), or “xu oi” (a nickname). The owners of the rips posted the horrible images on Internet as a way to show off their “mortification achievements.”

Dat Viet reporters have discovered that ripping bodies is now the hobby of a part of the Vietnamese teenagers, mostly born in 1990s. They suffer from the so called “Emo syndrome,” a lifestyle which worships emotions.

The tendency first appeared in the US in 1980s, which then has been developing in Asian countries. Emo has been following the Vietnamese overseas students to Vietnam.

Some analysts have rung the alarm bell over the rapid growth of the trend, saying that though it has been in Vietnam just for a short time; Emo has influenced the lifestyles of many young people.

The common thing of the Emo followers is that they live on their feelings, including the oddest feelings. The highest requirement on Emo followers is that they need to know to rip their bodies to find “strange feelings.” Therefore, a lot of Vietnamese young students take pride of the rips they generated on their bodies and showed off the “achievements” on Internet.

Especially, smaller students, who are still not the Emo followers, also like creating words on their bodies with the rips. The words could be their names, lovers’ names or parents’ names, which they believe can show their big loves to the relatives.
