Shot in the pastoral countryside of the Big Island of Hawaii, August at Akiko’s is a quiet film filled with deep undercurrents of history and mythology. Capturing the daily lives of a tight-knit community of locals, the film immerses the viewer in the shape-shifting landscape of a place we all think we know, but really know little about: Hawaii.

“Cool and calming as a summer sea breeze, Christopher Makoto Yogi’s gentle paean to Hawaii, jazz and inner peace should be a festival-circuit charmer,” Variety wrote.

The August at Akiko’s stars Canadian jazz musician Alex Zhang Hungtai as a fictionalised version of himself, chasing his past and a human connection on the sleepy island of his childhood.

The free entry screening will start at 8pm. Manzi Art Space is at 14 Phan Huy ich Street. The film will be screened with English subtitles. — VNS
