Nguyen Hoang Nam, Deputy Chief Secretariat of the Tay Ninh provincial People’s Committee, said that this would be a very big project. In late 2010, the local authorities approved in the principle the AVG’s project on developing a film studio and an eco-tourism site.
After conducting surveys, the investor found out that the Nhim Island, just one kilometer far from the Dau Tieng reservoir’s dyke can meet the requirements for the project development in terms of the scale, landscapes and transport. Meanwhile, the project also fits the provincial economic development strategy.
The project is expected to cover an area of 340 hectares which would comprise of two parts. The first part of the project, the main one, would include a film studio (119.7 hectares), an entertainment area (108 hectares) and an eco-tourism site (109 hectares). The other part would be reserved for cruise ship terminal and service area. In the future, a heliport would be built here. The project is estimated to cost 1476 billion dong in total.
Truong Van Ly, Chief Secretariat of the Tay Ninh provincial people’s committee, said that the local authorities have requested the investor to make further research and suggest the measures to protect the environment and to reserve the land fund for security and national defense works. The investor has also been told to consult with neighboring provinces and cities before drawing up the detailed project.
Nam has affirmed that the project will in no way affect the Dau Tieng reservoir. “The provincial authorities have consulted with the Dau Tieng Company, which is managing the reservoir, on the project and got the support from the company,” he said on Nguoi lao dong newspaper.
Worries raised for the fate of Dau Tieng
Meanwhile, Tran Huu Hau, Director of the Tay Ninh provincial Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism, has expressed his worry for the Dau Tieng reservoir.
Hau said that the project would not have big impacts if Dau Tieng simply serves the irrigation works. However, in fact, Dau Tieng is also the source which provides water to many localities, including HCM City. Meanwhile, tourism activities always make high level of discharging. Therefore, the provincial authorities have requested the investor to build forests and greenery belt, install a waste water treatment system in order to prevent the tourism activities from affecting the underground water.
Meanwhile, Vu Duc Hung, Chair of Dau Tieng Company, said he has only heard about the film studio project on the Nhim Island, while he has not received any official document.
Hung has also expressed his worry about the fate of Dau Tieng, because Dau Tieng is not only very important in the socio-economic development of the locality, but also plays a very important role in politics and national security.
Especially, Hung has warned that the waste from tourism activities may pollute the water resource. The machines and vehicles to be used during the construction may badly affect the safety of the dam. Meanwhile, once the tourism site attracts tourists, it would be very difficult to control the security.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dao Xuan Hoc has also affirmed that he has not received any document relating to the film studio on the Dau Tieng reservoir area.
Meanwhile, the information about the project has raised worries among scientists. Professor Nguyen Sinh Huy, one of the designers of the Dau Tieng reservoir, has warned that the new project many cause two problems – the influences to the water environment and the possible rise of the reservoir water level.
