The central coastal city of Danang will get its first-ever pedestrian street around downtown Han Market if the local government gives the green light, according to a proposal from the municipal Tourism Department.

The department has just submitted a plan for the pedestrian street and associated recreational services to the Danang People’s Committee. The proposed street will be located within a section of Hung Vuong Street, where the famous Han Market serves as a major shopping destination.

There are a wide variety of general, drug, shopping and food stores around the market. Most of them are geared toward South Korean and Chinese tourists, who make up roughly 80% of the foreign tourists visiting the area.

Together with an existing park on Hung Vuong Street, a square will be established there in the future. Many interesting spots exist around the future pedestrian area, such as a night food quarter on Pham Hong Thai Street, a café quarter on Yen Bai Street, Trung Vuong Theater on Hung Vuong Street and Rooster Church on Tran Phu Street.

So far this year, the number of visitors to the city has risen by 21.5% from a year earlier to an estimated 6.8 million, comprising 4.3 million domestic and 2.5 million foreign arrivals.
