VietNamNet Bridge – Do Dinh Thi of HCM City won a gold medal and broke the national record at the National Junior Swimming Championships in HCM City yesterday, July 21.

Thi took the lead in the boys’ 12-13, 50m freestyle with a time of 26.33secs, breaking the old national record of 26.55secs set by Nguyen Minh Hien at the same event last year.

Tran Hung Nguyen of the National Defence Sports Centre 5 and Tran Tri Tan of HCM City were the runners-up with a time of 26.94secs and 27.44secs, respectively.

Four swimmers broke the old national record of 2:29.71 set by Nguyen Tien Hung of the Military team in 2006 in the boys’ 14-15, 200m breaststroke. They are Pham Thanh Bao of Ben Tre, Nguyen Huu Kim Son and Ngo Phuoc Tan of An Giang, and Tran Hoang Phu of National Defence Sports Centre 4.

Bao finished first and took gold medal with a time of 2:23.65. Son and Tan were second and third, with a time of 2:23.68 and 2:24.49, while Phu ranked fourth but still beat Hung’s record with a time of 2:26.98.

After four days of competition, HCM City still top the medal tally with 16 golds, 28 silvers and 24 bronzes. National Defence Sports Centre 4 and National Defence Sports Centre 5 are second and third.
