Joining them were villagers from Village 7 in Ngoc Tem commune. Some left the spree after several hours. Only four men – A Ran, A Tin, A Lay and Run – stayed together to drink for three consecutive days.
Four of them had stomach ache before they died on March 18 (A Ran and A Tin) and March 19 (A Lay and Run).
The fifth man was A Ram, 46, who only drank three glasses of alcohol before leaving the spree. On March 21, after attending the funeral of the four dead men at noon, A Ram felt tired and went to the bed and passed away at 5 pm the same day for unknown reasons.
Local authorities collected samples to send to central agencies for testing to find out the reason of the death of five people.
The man’s death may not be an immediate consequence of the excessive drinking but is possibly due to his chronic diseases and eating too much beef at the same time, doctor Le Tri Khai, deputy director of the Kon Tom Department of Health, said.
It is suspected that these men ingested fake wine, which is made of industrial alcohol with water.
