At 7pm on December 22, fire rose from the ground floor of a motorbike saddle shop on Phan Dinh Phung Street, near the Bien Hoa Airport.

At that time, there were 10 people in the house but only Mr. Tran Pham Hung Phong, 50 years old, his wife, his two sons and a 5-year-old granddaughter escaped.

"I was lying on the bed on the second floor when I heard my granddaughter shout “fire, fire”. Running down, I only saw a small flame near the electric wire but it broke up too fast," Phong said.

At the time of the fire, piles of imitation leathers, plastic frames and other materials were on the ground of the first floor, occupying the path and there was no back door. Within seconds, the fire broke out more strongly. Phong and other people used CO2 fire extinguishers but the fire was too intense so nobody could reach the scene. In a moment, the house was in flames and the fire spread to two nearby houses.

Hundreds of fire-fighters and six fire trucks were sent the scene. Fire-fighters used ladder trucks to reach the 2nd floor to search for the victims who were still trapped inside. However, the fire got stronger and stronger from the house containing a lot of foam, making access very difficult.

It took almost two hours for the police to extinguish the fires. Five charred bodies were found in the area behind the house, including Mr. Tran Van Be, 84 years old, Mrs. Tran Thi Thao, 83, Mrs. Tran Thi Kim Tuyen, 41, Tran Ngoc Anh Tuyet, 6, Tuyen’s daughter and Ms. Tran Thi Thu Ha, a nurse from the Dong Nai General Hospital, who came to acupuncture for Mrs. Thao.
