The HCM City-Nha Trang, HCM City-Can Tho, HCM City-Loc Ninh, HCM City-Tay Ninh and Thu Thiem-Long Thanh routes were agreed. Among those, the city will prioritise Thu Thiem-Long Thanh and HCM City-Can Tho projects first.

Thu Thiem-Long Thanh route is 38km long, starting from Thu Thiem Tunnel in Thu Duc City and Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province. The project with a total investment capital of VND40.5 trillion (USD1.63 billion) is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

HCM City-Can Tho line which has a total investment of USD7 billion is 174km long, stretching Binh Duong, HCM City, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Can Tho with 13 stations. It will help shorten the travel time from Can Tho to HCM City to 75-80 minutes from the current 180-240 minutes. The project is slated to be started before 2030.

HCM City-Tay Ninh, HCM City-Loc Ninh and HCM City-Nha Trang lines will be 140km, 128km and 366km respectively.

Once put into use, these five lines are expected to help to cut the city’s logistical costs and increase the connection to the southern economic zone and the Mekong Delta region.

The city will consider building railway routes to connect ports in the coming time.

Ha Ngoc Truong, vice chairman of the HCM City Port and Bridge Association, said the transportation demand from HCM City to other southern localities have been on the rise. So it was necessary to develop rail projects as many roads face congestion.
