VietNamNet Bridge – Upstream floods in Vietnam’s southwestern region keeps rising quickly, and threatening hundreds of thousand hectares of winter-spring rice. Many schools have to close due to floods.
In Dong Thap province, five schools in Hong Ngu town have had to temporarily close as of September 25, due to the rise of Tien River. Some sections of the dike have been eroded while water is close to the dike surface, threating 5,000 hectares of rice in Hong Ngu district.
In An Giang province, water level in the Vinh Te River has reached approximately 4m and may reach 4.15m in the next few days. Nearly 120 hectares of rice in An Phu district has been flooded. Twenty schools and eight kindergartens have been closed due to flood.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cao Duc Phat, has instructed southern provinces to urgently move their residents out of the dangerous areas and upgrade dikes to protect hundreds of hectares of autumn-winter rice.
