Implementation of the project, under the Build-Transfer (BT) investment mode, will take three years.

The project aims to control flooding caused by high tides as well as adapt to climate change through sustainable management of water in an urban area of 570 sq kilometres in districts 1, 4, 7, 8, Binh Chanh and Nha Be with a total population of 6.5 million.

The project will build six flood tide control gates with a width of 40-160 metres and height of 3.6-10 metres.

A 7.8-km embankment along the Sai Gon River will also be built, along with 25 drains and a central management building equipped with a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

The Trungnam Group will receive land lots as payment under the BT contract, including a 5,500-squ.m land lot in Sai Gon South in District 7’s Tan Phu Ward, and 4.2 hectares and 31,400-sq.m land lots in District 9.

The city also will spend an estimated VND11.61 trillion (US$518.3 million) for 84 projects in an attempt to reduce floods over the next five years.

In 2011, the city had 58 sites heavily flooded by both tides and rainwater, 47 of which were cleared.

However, the city now has around 27 flooded sites. They include 11 old sites, two new locations and 14 sites that have seen a resurgence of flooding.
