VietNamNet BridgeHa Noi plans to build short steel flyovers to ease chronic, rush-hour traffic congestion at nine city intersections.

Director of the Department of Transport Nguyen Quoc Hung said the first flyover would be erected at the intersection of Huynh Thuc Khang and Thai Ha streets and another between Thai Ha and Chua Boc streets.

The former would run overhead along Lang Ha Streets and the latter will run from Tay Son to Nguyen Luong Bang streets.

The designs were expected to be completed this month and put to the People's Committee in November for approval, Hung said. The flyovers would be prefabricated out of steel and assembled on site.

Pham Huy Khang from the University of Transport, one of the teams that designed the flyovers, said the flyovers would be four-lanes and might be 9 -12 metres wide and about 250 metres long.

Deputy director of the Ministry of Transport's Department of Infrastructure Mai Van Hong said the work would take about two months to complete.

"Traffic won't be disrupted too much during construction," he said.

The design means that the flyovers can be disassembled and used in other places. A flyover is estimated to cost about VND150 billion (US$7.2 million).
