Dozens of flights had to delay taking off or landing for up to 10 hours because of foggy weather or previously delayed flights.

All three local airlines — Vietnam Airlines (VNA), Jetstar Pacific and Vietjet Air – said they had had a large number of delayed and cancelled flights.

Seaside airports like Vinh in Nghe An Province or Cai Bi in Hai Phong were particularly hard hit by the weather conditions, pilots said.

Le Truong Giang, spokesman for VNA, said that airports in mountainous regions like Dien Bien, Buon Ma Thuot and Lien Khuong were covered by thick clouds, causing difficulties for planes to land.

Lai Xuan Thanh, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of Viet Nam (CAAV), said: "Airlines must obey all rules and regulations and take care of passengers on delayed flights and clarify all possible options of new flights and transportation and added fees."

Thanh also asked airports to monitor prices and temporarily close airport shops that do not sell goods at stipulated prices.

According to the CAAV, 304 flights were delayed and 56 cancelled, of the 4,655 flights during the holiday period from January 28 to February 5.
