Many restaurants receive increased orders for late-night snacks

Shippers blocked the entrance to the restaurant of Vu Thanh Long on Ngoc Ha Street, as they waited for the food. According to Long, the orders for late-night snacks have increased as many football matches of the Euro 2020 are broadcasted at night in Vietnam. His restaurant receives over 300 orders a day normally, and during Euro 2020, his restaurant received up to 370-400 orders a day.

"I have 20 employees working on two shifts but I still have to hire more helpers," Long said.

Dang Van Nam, the chef of Long's restaurant, said, "Usually, we can take a five or ten-minute break, but now we nearly have no break time."

Another cook, Dang Dinh Quang, said he worked from 5 pm to 3 am. Quang said the busiest hours were from 11 pm to 2 am. Since a lot of money can be made during Euro 2020, they all work extra shifts even though it's hot to stay too long in the kitchen during summer. Most of their customers order chicken legs, spring rolls and fried corn.

Dang Van Nam said he felt thankful to have a stable income amid the pandemic. Besides the monthly salary of VND10m (USD432), he is offered a place to live and free meals while working at the restaurant.

Dang Dinh Quang said his restaurant owner gave him a bonus of VND200,000 to VND400,000 depending on the number of orders after such busy days. Quang said he would stay in Hanoi to gain experience for a few years before returning to his hometown to open his own business.

Tao Tuan Anh, an employee at a small noodle restaurant in Cau Giay District, said they did not offer derlivery services but they extended their opening hours from 11 pm to 12 am for takeaway services.

"I'm paid VND3m a month but I'm offered a place to live in and free meals. I can still save some money as I don't have many things to spend money on," he said.
