This was announced by Vu Thi Tu Anh, deputy head of the Ministry of Education and Training’s (MoET’s) High School Education department, at a workshop on methods of teaching English, organised by Viet Nam Education Publishing House in Ha Noi on Monday.

Anh, who is the deputy chief of the national Foreign Language 2020 project, said MoET had set graduation requirements for students of universities and colleges.

Accordingly, college students must meet a fourth grade level of fluency and university students must achieve a fifth grade level of fluency in a foreign language, with six grades in total. This applies to colleges and universities that specialise in teaching foreign languages.

Students of universities and colleges that do not specialise in teaching foreign languages must meet a third grade level of fluency, while those who are being tutored in a foreign language for their major must obtain a fourth grade level.

MoET has issued guidelines and a roadmap for students specialising in studying foreign languages and taking their majors in a foreign language, Anh said.

The foreign language requirement has been applied to students who specialised in learning foreign languages in the 2015-16 academic year.
