VietNamNet Bridge – A Forest Police Force will be in charge of patrolling and managing forests, under new plans proposed to the Government by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The specialised squad will be State controlled and will be responsible for apprehending and investigating forest criminals.
The Ministry of Public Security will work with the relevant ministries before submitting the plan to the Prime Minister for approval.
The plan aims to boost the Government's efforts in improving forest management. In the first six months of this year alone, more than 510 hectares of forests were illegally destroyed, according to the Ministry's latest statistics.
