Former Argentine president Nestor Kirchner (2003-2007) died on Wednesday of heart attack, local media reported.

Kirchner, husband of incumbent Argentine President Cristina Kirchner and one of the most influent politicians in Argentina, died in the southern city of El Calafate, local TV reported.

"It was a sudden death. There will be an official medical report," Kirchner's doctor Luis Buonomo was quoted as saying.

Kirchner, 60 years old, suffered an organic "decompensation" when he was at his house with his wife Fernandez.

Later, when he was taken to the hospital in El Calafate city, Kirchner suffered two heart attacks.

At the beginning of this year, Kirchner had got two heart surgeries to unblock arteries. He is widely expected to run for presidency in 2011.

This year he was appointed General Secretary of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

Kirchner met his wife and the current president, Cristina, 57, when they were both university law students. They have two children.
